Leave the two folders alone until you know what they are. Their names and locations are not specified, so it is not possible to tell whether they are unused folders, part of a Windows profile, or related to a profile problem. Check each folder’s full path and visible contents first; if Windows is loading a temporary profile or your files are missing, preserve the folders and follow Microsoft’s recovery guidance.
First identify which folders you mean
“User folders” can refer to different places in Windows. The two folders might be directly under C:Users, inside your own profile, or duplicate-looking known folders shown in File Explorer. Those cases are not interchangeable, and the wording alone does not identify them.
- In File Explorer, locate the two folders. Right-click each and choose Properties to check its location, or open it and use the address bar to note the full path.
- Write down each exact folder name and full path. For example, a folder directly under
C:Usersis different from a folder underC:UsersYourName. - Look at the visible contents and modification dates. Treat these as clues, not proof: an unfamiliar name, an old date, or a folder that appears empty does not establish that it is safe to delete.
Windows profiles include more than a visible collection of folders. Microsoft describes a profile as including the NTuser.dat registry hive and profile folders that can contain documents, settings, and application data. Windows uses profile folders for locations such as the Desktop, Start menu, and Documents. Microsoft Learn notes that “Windows Explorer uses the user-profile folders extensively for such items as the user’s Desktop, Start menu and Documents folder.” (Microsoft Learn: About User Profiles.)

| Fix a profile problem | Windows reports a profile error, loads a temporary profile, or your usual Desktop or Documents files are missing. | Preserve the folders and files. Follow Microsoft’s corrupted-profile guidance rather than deleting a folder based on its appearance. |
| Free disk space | Your account loads normally and you are looking for storage to reclaim. | Review Windows’ built-in Cleanup recommendations and clean only categories you understand. |
If Windows is loading a temporary or corrupted profile
Do not remove either folder while troubleshooting. Microsoft warns that incomplete or improper profile removal can leave additional user folders or lead to temporary profiles, so an apparent extra folder can be a sign of a profile-management issue rather than disposable clutter.

Microsoft’s guidance for a corrupted user profile describes creating a new account and copying files from the old profile. Follow its steps carefully; the guidance warns against displaying hidden files and protected operating-system files during the copy process. See Microsoft’s instructions for fixing a corrupted user profile.
If you only want to reclaim disk space
Use Windows’ own storage review instead of guessing whether a profile folder is redundant. Open Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. Review the categories Windows lists and the space expected to be freed, then select only items you recognize and intend to remove. Microsoft documents this option for Windows 10 and Windows 11 in its drive-space cleanup guidance.

- Important Notes for PS/Xbox Gaming Devices: You can play last-gen games (PS4 / Xbox One) directly from an external hard drive. However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
What can be concluded about the two folders?
Without their exact names, full paths, and contents—and without knowing whether your account loads normally—there is no reliable way to classify these particular folders as safe to remove. Do not delete them merely because there are two. If you share the folder names and paths, along with any profile error you see, the situation can be assessed more specifically.
