Local reporting describes two separate early-stage approaches for possible data centers near Metter, Georgia—not a confirmed five-building campus. One possible site is in Candler County near Metter-Candler Airport and Interstate 16; the other is within Metter city limits, west of Highway 129 off East Hiawatha Street. Neither proposal had been formally approved in the reporting available, and key project details remain undisclosed.
What is proposed near Metter?
WTOC reported on September 15, 2026, that two groups had approached local leaders about possible data center projects. The report describes separate proposals in different jurisdictions, not one shared campus. It does not confirm that either proposal would have five buildings. WTOC’s report is the source for the proposals and their broad locations.
The county approach
One possible site is in Candler County near Metter-Candler Airport and adjacent to I-16. It would be outside Metter city limits, in the county’s jurisdiction.

The other possible site is within Metter, west of Highway 129 off East Hiawatha Street. The two locations should be treated as distinct proposals unless officials or project representatives establish otherwise.

Have the proposals been approved?
No approval is established by the available reporting. On September 15, Mayor Rashida Taylor said Metter had not received a formal data center application. County Administrator Bryan Aasheim said he had no hard facts because project details had not been provided, and that county landowners were assessing feasibility and the steps needed to move forward. WTOC reported that neither the city council nor county commission had decided on either proposal.
County agendas show that officials scheduled discussion of data center projects, zoning controls, and a possible moratorium for unincorporated areas. The September 8 agenda listed the topic, as did the September 21 agenda, which also included public comment. The October 5 agenda again listed discussion; the docket page stated that no outcome had been recorded when it was updated October 6. An agenda item shows that discussion was scheduled, not that a moratorium or other action was adopted.

In WTOC’s September 15 report, Mayor Taylor said, “We are listening to them, and we want to hear from them, and we want them to be a part of the process,” adding that the community should have a chance to hear what proponents have to say. Aasheim said he had not agreed to anything or signed an NDA, and that he lacked hard facts because specific details had not been shared with him.

What to look for if either proposal advances
Any meaningful comparison will require separate, documented details for each site. The most useful questions are:
- Which jurisdiction has authority over the site, and what approvals or hearings are required?
- What are the site boundaries, acreage, building count, and floor area?
- Who is the developer and eventual operator?
- How much electricity is requested, and who would pay for any grid upgrades?
- What water source and consumption are projected, and what cooling system is proposed?
- What backup generators, emissions, noise, traffic, and stormwater impacts are anticipated?
- What jobs, tax terms, or other commitments are offered, and which conditions would be legally enforceable?
These are questions for future filings and public proceedings, not established characteristics or impacts of either Metter-area approach.
