Twenty Twenty-One is a classic WordPress theme designed to work closely with the block editor. Install and activate it from Appearance > Themes, configure the site-wide options in the Customizer, and build pages and posts with blocks and the theme’s patterns. Its one-column layout, custom colors, optional dark mode, accessibility features, footer widgets, and update-safe child-theme approach make it a practical choice for blogs, portfolios, and small content sites.
This guide covers the current WordPress.org release (version 2.9, listed as updated August 19, 2026), the exact setup paths, image and layout specifications, starter content limitations, accessibility behavior, and the safest ways to extend the theme.

What Twenty Twenty-One is—and when it is a good fit
Twenty Twenty-One was introduced as the default theme for WordPress 5.6. It remains a community-maintained classic theme distributed through WordPress.org. The official listing shows version 2.9, more than 200,000 active installations, a minimum WordPress version of 5.3, and a minimum PHP version of 5.6. Those figures describe the listing at the time of its August 19, 2026 update; your host may require newer PHP for security or for other plugins.
The theme is intentionally a blank canvas: the block editor supplies the content tools, while the theme supplies a restrained visual system, editor styles, block patterns, and Customizer controls. It is not a block theme. You can edit posts and pages with blocks, but the complete site structure is not managed in the modern Site Editor in the same way as a block theme. Header, footer, menus, widgets, colors, and other global choices remain in the Customizer and standard Appearance screens.

Choose it when you want a predictable one-column presentation, a small set of global controls, and an update-safe path for adding code. Consider another theme if your project depends on visual, full-site editing of templates and template parts, because that workflow requires a block theme.
Check requirements before installing
Confirm the site is running at least WordPress 5.3 and PHP 5.6, the minimums stated on the official listing. These are compatibility floors, not recommendations for a secure production server. Ask your host which PHP versions receive security updates and test the theme with your active plugins on a staging copy when possible.

- Have a logo, a site title and tagline, a menu structure, a homepage plan, and appropriately sized images ready.
Install and activate Twenty Twenty-One
- Sign in to the WordPress dashboard and open Appearance > Themes.
- If the theme is already installed, select it and choose Activate. If it is not installed, select Add New, search for “Twenty Twenty-One,” open the matching theme card, and choose Install.
- After installation finishes, select Activate. WordPress will retain the previous theme’s settings, but controls that are specific to that theme will no longer apply.
- Open Appearance > Customize to begin site-wide configuration. The available panels can vary slightly with WordPress version, active plugins, and whether a feature has content to configure.
- Open the block editor from Posts > Add New or Pages > Add New. Save a draft and preview it at desktop and mobile widths before publishing.
On a multisite installation, network policies can prevent individual site administrators from installing themes. A network administrator must make the theme available first.
Configure the site in the Customizer
Site Identity
Use Appearance > Customize > Site Identity to set the site title, tagline, site icon, and custom logo. The documentation recommends a logo at least 300 pixels wide or at least 100 pixels tall. Upload a larger, sharp source when possible; WordPress can scale it down, but it cannot recover detail from a small image.
Choose a concise site title even if the logo contains the name. The title can be read by assistive technology and may appear where the logo is hidden. Keep the tagline useful for visitors rather than repeating keywords.
Colors and Dark Mode
The Colors & Dark Mode panel controls the site background and text palette. Dark Mode Support is opt-in: it becomes available when you select a light site background. With it enabled, visitors can receive a light or dark scheme based on their operating-system color preference, and supported contexts include a toggle button so a visitor can switch modes.

If the dark-mode controls do not appear, first verify that the selected background is light; the feature is not offered for a dark base background.

Background image
The background-image controls let you upload an image and adjust its display settings. Keep important information out of the image itself: text over a responsive background can become unreadable on narrow screens, and a background image should not replace meaningful content or a logo.
Menus
Open Menus to create or assign navigation. Add pages, custom links, categories, or other available content, then drag items to set their order and indentation. Give the menu a clear location and test keyboard focus, the mobile presentation, and long labels. If no menu is assigned, the site may show a fallback based on available pages.
Widgets
Twenty Twenty-One provides one widget area below the site content and above the footer. Each widget occupies roughly one third of the available space, up to about 380 pixels wide. Add only widgets that help visitors complete a task—such as finding recent posts, categories, or contact information—and check how the row collapses on a phone. A large number of widgets can make the footer difficult to scan.

In Homepage Settings, choose whether the front page shows your latest posts or a static page. For a static front page, select a separate posts page. Create and publish those pages first so they appear in the selectors. Preview the home page, posts archive, and an individual post; each uses a different content context.
Excerpt settings
Use the excerpt-related options to control how archive listings introduce posts. Write manual excerpts when a precise introduction is important. Otherwise, WordPress generates one from the post content. Check that the first paragraph does not expose an unfinished sentence, a shortcode, or an image caption.
Additional CSS
Additional CSS is suitable for small presentation changes that should survive a normal theme update, such as adjusting spacing or a color. Keep selectors narrow, add comments for future maintenance, and test at several widths. CSS cannot safely replace structural PHP changes, register new menus, or add server-side behavior. For those tasks, use a child theme or a maintained plugin.
Build pages and posts with the block editor
Twenty Twenty-One includes editor styles intended to keep the editing view close to the published result. Use the editor for headings, paragraphs, lists, images, galleries, media, columns, groups, and other blocks. The editor preview is a guide rather than a guarantee: plugin-generated markup, fonts, browser settings, and viewport width can still change the final appearance.

Patterns included with the theme
Block patterns are pre-arranged groups of blocks that you can insert and then edit. The documented examples include a large-text layout, a links area, contact information, a media-and-text article title, and overlapping images. Insert a pattern from the block inserter, replace its sample text and media, and remove any section you do not need. Patterns are starting layouts, not locked templates; changing one instance does not update every other page.
Block border and overlap styles
The documentation describes border styles for Media & Text, Latest Posts, Image, Cover, and Group blocks. It also documents an overlap style for Columns. These styles can create visual separation or layered compositions without custom code. Use them sparingly: overlapping content can reduce readability and make keyboard navigation harder to understand if the visual order differs from the document order.
Featured images and media
Use a featured image for posts that appear in archives, latest-posts blocks, or social previews. The recommended featured-image width is 610 pixels or larger. Crop or prepare a larger source to avoid blurry thumbnails, and add meaningful alternative text when the image conveys information. If it is decorative, mark it as such rather than repeating the post title in the alternative text.

These are theme documentation targets, not hard upload limits. WordPress and the browser may resize an asset, and a plugin can introduce its own dimensions.

Use Starter Content only on a fresh site
Starter Content demonstrates Twenty Twenty-One’s patterns and styles, but it has a strict prerequisite: it can be activated only on a freshly installed site with no pages or posts. Open the Customizer, enable the Starter Content option when it is offered, and choose Publish. The generated pages and posts are demonstration material; replace or remove them before a public launch.
If the site already contains even one page or post, the Starter Content workflow will not be available. Do not delete production content merely to unlock it. Instead, create a disposable test installation, or insert the documented patterns manually into the existing site.
Accessibility and color-scheme behavior
The theme is listed as accessibility-ready and documents a skip-to-content link, semantic HTML landmarks, high-contrast support, and keyboard navigation. These features provide a foundation, but your content and plugins can still introduce accessibility problems.

- Use heading levels in a logical hierarchy rather than choosing a heading for visual size.
- Give links descriptive names, especially in link areas and menus.
- Provide alternative text for informative images and captions when context is needed.
- Test keyboard focus through menus, forms, dialogs, and any interactive block.
- Check contrast in both the selected light palette and the optional dark scheme.
- Do not rely on color alone to communicate status, categories, or errors.
The skip link lets keyboard users jump past repeated navigation to the main content. Semantic landmarks help assistive-technology users identify navigation, main content, and footer regions. These benefits can be undermined by custom HTML or a plugin that outputs unlabeled controls, so test the complete site rather than the theme in isolation.
Code-level customization without losing updates
Use a child theme for PHP and template changes
Twenty Twenty-One is a classic PHP-template theme. Directly editing files in the parent theme can solve a problem quickly, but the edits are overwritten when the parent theme updates. A child theme keeps your templates, stylesheet, and functions separate so the parent can receive security and compatibility fixes.
Typical child-theme work includes a custom template, a new action or filter, or a stylesheet rule that is too extensive for Additional CSS. Keep the child theme focused, document each override, and retest after parent-theme updates because a changed template may make an override obsolete.
Declare capabilities through documented APIs
WordPress developer documentation identifies functions.php and add_theme_support as the standard places for a theme to declare supported capabilities. Put theme-specific declarations in the child theme’s functions.php, enqueue styles through WordPress APIs, and avoid copying parent files unless a template override is genuinely required.
Understand the role of theme.json
theme.json is a structured mechanism for controlling editor settings and styles where a theme supports it. It does not turn this classic theme into a full Site Editor theme. Use the APIs and extension points supported by the theme and your WordPress version, and test editor behavior as well as the front end.
Compatibility, updates, and migration decisions
Keep WordPress, PHP, Twenty Twenty-One, and plugins updated on a schedule. Before updating a production site, take a backup and test the update on staging when the site has custom CSS, a child theme, or complex block content. Review the changelog and inspect templates or styles that your child theme overrides.

- Editing model: does the project benefit from the Customizer plus block editor, or does it require full Site Editor control over templates and template parts?
- Layout: is the documented one-column behavior and 1,240-pixel maximum wide area appropriate for the content?
- Accessibility and color: are skip navigation, semantic landmarks, keyboard support, high contrast, and optional dark mode important requirements?
- Patterns and editor styles: will the included patterns and border or overlap styles cover the design without extensive code?
- Support window: do the minimum WordPress and PHP versions, release cadence, and your host’s supported versions align?
Do not choose on the screenshot alone. Build representative pages—a post with a featured image, a page with a form, a long menu, and a footer with widgets—and compare the editing and maintenance workload.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The theme is not listed
Confirm the dashboard account can install themes and that the site can reach the WordPress theme directory. On multisite, ask the network administrator to install or enable the theme. If the server reports a PHP or WordPress requirement error, upgrade the environment only after checking plugin compatibility and taking a backup.
Customizer options are missing
Some panels appear only when their feature has something to configure. For example, menu locations, widget areas, homepage selectors, and dark-mode controls can depend on existing content or on the selected background color. Verify that Twenty Twenty-One is active, reload the Customizer, and check the relevant prerequisite before assuming the feature is broken.
Starter Content will not appear
Starter Content is limited to a fresh installation with no pages or posts. A site with existing content cannot use that workflow safely. Insert the patterns manually or use a disposable test site.
The front end differs from the editor
Clear any page or browser cache, preview at the same viewport width, and check for plugin styles or custom CSS. Confirm that the block is supported by the current WordPress version and that a child-theme override has not changed its markup or spacing.
Dark mode looks unreadable
Recheck text, link, button, form, and image contrast in the dark scheme. Remove hard-coded light or dark colors from Additional CSS and plugins where they conflict with the theme’s color variables. If you need a fixed light design, disable the optional dark-mode support rather than shipping an inconsistent palette.

Pre-launch checklist
- Twenty Twenty-One is active and the site meets the documented minimum WordPress 5.3 and PHP 5.6 requirements.
- Site title, tagline, logo, and site icon are set; the logo remains clear at mobile widths.
- Primary navigation has been assigned, ordered, and tested with a keyboard and touch device.
- Homepage and posts-page settings point to the intended pages.
- Featured images meet the 610-pixel-or-larger recommendation and have appropriate alternative text.
- Colors, links, forms, and any optional dark mode have sufficient contrast.
- Footer widgets are useful, concise, and readable when stacked on a phone.
