Use HDMI for devices that send a picture and sound to the television—streaming players, game consoles, Blu-ray players, cable or satellite boxes, and computers with a compatible video output. Use the TV’s USB port only for functions that the specific model supports, such as playing files from a flash drive or connecting an approved peripheral. A soundbar or AV receiver belongs on the HDMI socket labeled ARC or eARC when both devices support it.

Connector shape is not enough to identify a port’s capabilities. Labels, signal-format settings, file-format support, power limits and the exact TV model manual determine what will work.

HDMI and USB do different jobs on a TV

HDMI is the normal input for an external video source. Sony’s official TV help guidance describes HDMI IN as the connection for an HDMI device and notes that the interface transfers digital video and audio on one cable. A console, streaming player or set-top box sends its output to the TV over HDMI, so you select the matching HDMI input on the television.

USB is a model-dependent TV function rather than a universal video input. Televisions may use USB for flash drives, external storage, cameras, camcorders, keyboards, mice, webcams or service and update tasks. Whether any one of those works depends on the TV’s software, supported file systems, media codecs, power output and the port’s intended purpose. A USB socket can sometimes supply power to an attached device, but supplying power does not turn it into an HDMI-style picture input.

When HDMI is the right choice

Streaming players and set-top boxes

Connect the player or box’s HDMI output to any TV HDMI input that supports the signal you intend to watch. Select that numbered HDMI input with the remote. If the picture is absent, limited to a lower resolution or missing HDR, inspect the source’s output setting, the TV’s signal-format option for that socket and the cable category recommended for the combination.

Do not use a nearby USB socket as a substitute for the player’s HDMI connection. The USB port might provide power for a small device, but the player still needs a supported video connection to deliver its picture. Follow the player and TV manuals for power requirements; a port that cannot supply enough current can cause restarts or intermittent operation.

Game consoles

Use HDMI for both video and audio. Which HDMI input is best depends on the TV model: some inputs may offer a higher supported resolution or refresh rate, variable refresh rate (VRR), automatic low-latency mode (ALLM) or a particular HDR format. These features are not guaranteed on every HDMI socket. Check the labels and specifications, then enable the console’s output options only after confirming that the selected input and cable support them.

Blu-ray players and cable boxes

These sources also belong on HDMI IN. Confirm the TV and source support the desired resolution and HDR mode. Copy-protection requirements such as HDCP can affect whether a source displays; if an error appears, test the manufacturer-recommended cable and another compatible HDMI input rather than trying USB.

Computers

Connect a computer’s HDMI output to the TV’s HDMI input. In the computer’s display settings, choose a resolution and refresh rate that the TV input accepts. If the computer has another connector, use an adapter that supports the needed video and audio mode; a physically fitting adapter may still lack the required signal support. Audio output may need to be switched to the TV in the operating system.

Choosing the HDMI input and cable for high-quality signals

HDMI capability is a combination of the TV model, the individual input, the source device, the cable and the enabled settings. Never assume every HDMI socket on one television offers identical features, and do not choose a cable solely because it carries a version number on its packaging.

4K and HDR

Sony’s help guidance recommends a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for compatible 4K content and instructs users to set the applicable HDMI signal format on the TV. That recommendation applies to the supported TV and signal combination, not automatically to every television or source. Confirm the input’s documented resolution, refresh rate and HDR support first.

8K, high refresh rates and gaming features

Roku’s guidance for compatible Roku TV arrangements says that 4K/HDR setups need Premium High Speed HDMI, while compatible 8K/HDR setups need Ultra High Speed HDMI. The guidance is specific to those compatible arrangements; it is not a blanket guarantee for every TV. For 8K, high-refresh-rate gaming, VRR or ALLM, check both devices’ specifications and the TV’s port labels before selecting a cable.

The HDMI Licensing Administrator describes feature families including eARC, VRR and ALLM, but a feature’s presence in the HDMI specification does not prove that a particular TV input or source implements it. Use the exact model manuals and the TV’s on-screen signal-format menu.

A practical cable checklist

  • Identify the highest resolution, refresh rate and HDR mode you plan to use.
  • Check which TV HDMI inputs support that combination.
  • Buy the cable category named by the TV or source manufacturer—Premium High Speed for the compatible 4K guidance above, or Ultra High Speed for compatible 8K/HDR guidance.
  • After connecting, select the TV’s recommended HDMI signal format if the menu provides one.
  • If the signal is unstable, test a known-good cable of the recommended category and remove intermediate switches or adapters while diagnosing.

How to connect a soundbar or AV receiver

Use the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC and the audio system’s matching HDMI connection. Audio Return Channel sends the TV’s audio back over the HDMI cable, which can eliminate a separate audio lead for supported sources and built-in TV apps.

ARC versus eARC

ARC and eARC are not interchangeable feature levels. Roku’s support guidance explains that eARC can carry additional uncompressed audio formats, but both the TV and the audio device must support eARC to use those enhancements. If one side supports only ARC, a compatible ARC connection may still work, with fewer audio-format capabilities.

Connection steps

  1. Locate the TV HDMI socket explicitly marked ARC or eARC; do not assume the first HDMI input has audio return.
  2. Connect that socket to the soundbar or receiver’s HDMI ARC/eARC socket using the cable recommended in the device manuals.
  3. Turn on HDMI-CEC and ARC/eARC in the TV and audio-system menus. Manufacturers use different names and menu locations.
  4. Set the TV’s audio output to the connected HDMI audio system and choose an audio format that both devices support.
  5. Play sound from a TV app or connected source and verify that the audio system switches on and receives it.

If the audio system lacks ARC or eARC, consult the TV manual for another supported connection, such as optical audio. Do not plug the soundbar into an ordinary HDMI input and expect audio return unless that socket is specifically labeled for it.

Using USB storage and peripherals

Playing movies, music and photos

Insert a flash drive or external disk into a USB port that the TV manual identifies for media playback. Open the television’s media player or input list and select the drive. The TV may require a particular file system, impose a capacity limit or support only selected video containers, codecs, audio formats and subtitle types.

A USB connector alone does not promise that a file will play. Sony’s product specifications for the XR-85X90K, for example, list two side USB ports and a defined set of supported playback codecs. Those specifications describe that model, not all Sony televisions or all TVs. Check your own model’s support list before copying a library or purchasing a drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recording and time-shifting

Some televisions allow USB recording, while others allow playback only. Recording may require a specified drive speed or capacity and can be restricted by broadcasts, region or copy-protection rules. Treat recording as a separate feature that must be stated in the model manual; do not infer it from the presence of a USB socket.

  • BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE: Works with earlier versions to allow for use with a wide range of HDMI-enabled devices

Cameras and camcorders

Sony lists digital cameras and camcorders among examples of USB-connected devices. The TV still must support the camera’s connection mode and file formats. If the camera offers HDMI output, that may be the more direct route for live video; follow the camera and TV documentation rather than assuming USB will display a live feed.

Keyboards, mice and webcams

Connect a keyboard, mouse, webcam or other peripheral through USB only when the TV documentation names that device type. Smart-TV software may recognize a keyboard for text entry but not support every key, mouse function or webcam application. A USB hub or extension can also exceed the TV’s power or compatibility limits, so use one only when the manual permits it.

Service and update sockets

Some USB ports are reserved for firmware updates or service. A port labeled Service, Maintenance or a similar term may not appear in the media player and may not accept ordinary storage. Use the port designation and manual to identify its purpose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step-by-step connection decisions

If the device sends a picture to the TV

  1. Look for an HDMI output on the device and an HDMI IN label on the TV.
  2. Check the TV manual for the input’s supported resolution, refresh rate, HDR and gaming features.
  3. Connect the HDMI cable, select the matching HDMI input and configure the source’s output.
  4. If the picture is blank or restricted, check the TV’s HDMI signal-format setting and use the cable category recommended for the intended signal.

If the device is a file drive or peripheral

  1. Read the TV manual to confirm that the specific USB port supports the device’s function.
  2. Verify the required file system, capacity, codecs and power limits.
  3. Connect the device, open the relevant media or accessory function and test a supported file or operation.
  4. If the TV does not detect it, try the permitted USB input and a simpler, correctly formatted device before concluding that the port is defective.

If the device is a soundbar or receiver

  1. Confirm that both products support ARC or eARC.
  2. Use the HDMI sockets labeled ARC/eARC.
  3. Enable HDMI-CEC and ARC/eARC, then select the audio system as the TV output.
  4. Test TV-app audio and adjust the format to one supported by both devices.

Troubleshooting common connection problems

There is no picture from an HDMI device

  • Verify that the cable is connected to the source’s HDMI output and the TV’s HDMI IN, then select that numbered input.
  • Confirm that the source is powered and set to a resolution and refresh rate accepted by that input.
  • Check the TV’s port-specific HDMI signal-format option.
  • Use the cable category recommended for the signal and test another compatible HDMI input.
  • Temporarily remove switches, splitters and adapters to isolate the failing link.

The picture is limited to a lower quality

Inspect the source output, the TV input’s documented capabilities and the selected signal-format mode. A cable or intermediate device that cannot carry the chosen resolution, refresh rate or HDR mode can force a lower setting. The most capable HDMI socket may be a particular labeled input rather than every socket on the panel.

The TV does not see a USB drive

  • Confirm that the socket is intended for media playback rather than service or updates.
  • Check the drive’s file system, capacity and power requirements against the TV manual.
  • Test a supported file type and codec; a drive can be detected even when an individual file is unsupported.
  • If a large drive blocks neighboring sockets, move it to another USB input when the manual permits that arrangement.

A USB movie is listed but will not play

Compare the file’s container, video codec, audio codec, resolution and subtitle format with the TV’s published playback list. Rename the file only if the manual identifies a naming requirement; changing the extension does not convert the underlying codec.

The soundbar is connected but silent

  • Make sure both ends use the TV and soundbar sockets labeled ARC or eARC.
  • Enable ARC/eARC and HDMI-CEC on both devices; menu names vary.
  • Set the TV audio output to HDMI audio and choose a mutually supported format.
  • Power-cycle both products after changing CEC or ARC settings.
  • If the soundbar lacks ARC/eARC, use the alternative connection specified by the TV manual, such as optical audio.

Questions to answer before buying a cable or drive

  • What is the device trying to send? A live picture and sound normally require HDMI; stored files or a supported accessory may use USB.
  • Which exact TV model is involved? Port functions, codec lists, recording support and power limits are model-specific.
  • Which input is labeled for the feature? ARC/eARC, high-bandwidth video modes and service functions may be restricted to particular sockets.
  • What signal or file format is required? Match resolution, refresh rate, HDR, VRR, ALLM, file system and codecs before troubleshooting.
  • Does the other device support the same feature? eARC, for example, requires support on both the TV and the audio system.

The practical rule

Choose HDMI when an external device is the source of the TV picture and sound. Choose USB only for a function that the TV’s own documentation explicitly supports, most commonly storage playback or a listed peripheral. For TV audio returned to a soundbar or receiver, use the HDMI ARC/eARC socket and enable the required settings. Labels and the exact model manual—not connector shape—are the final authority.
