TV screen burn-in is lasting image retention: a faint outline or patch remains visible after the picture changes. A mark that fades with different content or ordinary viewing may be temporary image retention instead. Static content and prolonged high brightness can increase the risk, particularly on OLED TVs, but there is no universal safe viewing time for every model. Start with varied content and your TV’s built-in protections; if a mark persists, follow support guidance for the exact model rather than repeatedly running a refresh or expecting a video to repair worn pixels.

What TV screen burn-in means

Image retention is an image or part of an image that remains visible after the content changes. It can be faint and temporary. Burn-in is the more persistent form: LG describes it as retention that lasts much longer and is usually visible even while other content plays (LG USA Support).

In practical terms, a lingering channel logo, menu, or interface outline may be temporary retention or lasting uneven pixel wear. How long it remains is a useful clue, but appearance alone does not identify the cause or determine whether a panel needs service.

Why static images can leave a mark

Repeatedly displaying the same bright elements can expose parts of a screen differently from the rest. LG lists static channel logos, paused games, vivid picture mode, and very high brightness over extended periods as risk examples. Sony also warns about repeatedly or continuously displaying the same image, including clocks and bright colors (LG guidance; Sony OLED Help Guide).

These are risk factors, not a universal timer or brightness threshold. The available guidance does not establish a single safe duration that applies to every television, panel, and use pattern. OLED pixels can wear unevenly under prolonged static exposure; the extent depends on the display and how it is used.

How to reduce the risk

  • Vary what you watch. Avoid leaving the same logo, game HUD, clock, or other bright fixed element on screen for long stretches.
  • Do not leave a bright static screen unattended. Pause only as needed, and use the TV’s screen saver or turn the set off when you are finished.
  • Use built-in screen-saving features. LG says its screen saver activates after approximately two minutes when the TV detects no activity on a no-signal screen or paused video; timing may be shorter in built-in apps. This is LG’s guidance for the described conditions, not a guarantee about every model or menu.
  • Turn the television off normally. Sony recommends switching the TV off with its remote or controls so model-specific maintenance can run during standby.
  • Allow automatic compensation to complete. Do not routinely unplug the set immediately after use if its manual indicates that standby maintenance is expected.

Menu names and feature behavior vary by model. Check the exact TV’s manual for its screen saver, pixel shift, compensation cycle, and standby instructions.

What to do when a mark appears

  1. Change the content. Check whether the mark is visible over varied scenes, not only on the screen where you first noticed it.
  2. Continue ordinary varied viewing and observe it. LG says many forms of image retention fade quickly. In RTINGS’ tests, some observed retention also diminished after compensation cycles. These observations do not establish that every mark will fade.
  3. Use built-in maintenance only as the manufacturer directs. Read the manual for the exact model before manually starting a panel refresh. Sony’s 2019 OLED guide says to refresh manually only when retention is particularly noticeable, gives once a year as a reference, and warns that more frequent use may affect the panel’s usable life (Sony OLED Help Guide).
  4. Contact the manufacturer if the mark persists. Provide the model number and describe when the mark appears. Warranty coverage and repair options depend on the model and region, so confirm them with the manufacturer rather than assuming a universal policy.

A pixel-cleaning video or external device is not established as a repair for permanent burn-in. Avoid repeatedly forcing manual refresh cycles in the hope of erasing lasting wear.

What long-duration tests show—and what they do not

RTINGS’ three-TV experiment

RTINGS ran one LG B6 OLED, one Samsung VA LCD, and one LG IPS LCD for 20 hours per day, seven days per week, from August 31, 2017, through November 15, 2019. The OLED developed burn-in under extended static content; the two LCD televisions showed no signs of burn-in in that experiment. RTINGS also found that pixel shift spread static content across more OLED pixels, but was less effective against a large logo (RTINGS’ historical test).

This is evidence that prolonged static use can cause uneven OLED wear, not a prediction for every current OLED or LCD model. The test involved three older units and an unusually intensive schedule.

RTINGS’ 100-TV accelerated project

RTINGS’ separate longevity project uses long daily schedules and a continuous CNN feed, with maximum brightness in the stated setup. It enables panel-saving features and schedules standby time for compensation cycles. Its results include temporary retention and burn-in on tested OLED sets; compensation cycles reduced much of some observed retention (results and updates; methodology).

The test’s changelog notes an early schedule flaw that limited some Sony compensation cycles, so results need to be read alongside the methodology and revisions. This accelerated setup exposes failure modes under heavy use; it does not tell an ordinary household how many years a television will last.

OLED and LCD: a practical distinction

The cited RTINGS experiment found burn-in on its tested OLED and none on its two tested LCDs, but those results should not be generalized to all present-day televisions. If a household routinely leaves fixed logos or interfaces on screen for long periods, consider that use pattern when choosing a display. Also check the particular model’s screen-saving and compensation features and the manufacturer’s instructions. The cited tests establish a risk under their conditions, not a universal ranking of current display models.
