If your TV keeps dimming, first check its automatic brightness and energy-saving controls. A light sensor, Eco or power-saving mode, or screensaver can change brightness by design. The right fix depends on when the dimming happens, the TV model, and whether you’re watching active video or a static screen.
First, identify when the screen dims
Before changing settings, note whether dimming happens during ordinary video, in dark scenes, while an image is paused, only in a screensaver, or only on one HDMI input. Record the TV’s model and software version, plus the app or input and type of content. These clues help distinguish automatic brightness adjustments from screensaver behavior, possible OLED panel protection, or an issue tied to one source. There is no single cause or menu path that applies to every TV.
- Only in a screensaver or Ambient Display: This may be expected behavior. Google TV says its screensaver adjusts brightness to room lighting and that “The screen dims in dark rooms.” That explanation applies to screensaver mode; it does not establish why active video dims.
- During ordinary viewing: Check for ambient-light, adaptive-brightness, or energy-saving controls.
- On a paused or static image on an OLED TV: Brightness reduction may be protective behavior related to image retention. It does not, by itself, prove a fault.
- Only on one input or app: Compare another source before changing more settings.
Try these low-risk checks
- Open picture and power settings. Look for Ambient Light, Light Sensor, Auto Luminance, Ambient Optimisation, Energy Saving, Power Saving, Eco, or Adaptive Brightness. The exact names and availability vary by model and software.
- Temporarily adjust the relevant automatic control. Turn it off or reduce it as a diagnostic, then replay the same content under similar room-lighting conditions. Change one control at a time so you can tell what affected the result.
- Check the sensor area. If your TV has an ambient-light sensor, make sure it is not covered or obstructed. On the Samsung model covered in its cited 2018 manual, the sensor is at the bottom of the TV; placement varies by model.
- Compare sources. Replay similar content from a different HDMI input or a built-in app. Samsung recommends testing another source when brightness changes continue after energy-saving controls are adjusted.
- Use the model-specific support guide if the symptom remains. If dimming continues across sources after you check automatic settings, consult the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model or contact a qualified repair service.
Where to look by TV brand
Menu labels change between model generations, regions, and software versions. Treat these as starting points, not guaranteed paths.

Samsung
Look for Eco Sensor or Ambient Light Detection, as well as Energy Saving. Samsung distinguishes Energy Saving, which selects a brightness level, from Eco Sensor, which adjusts brightness based on surrounding light. A cited 2018 manual lists Home/Settings > General > Eco Solution > Ambient Light Detection; newer models may use different menus. If the sensor is obstructed, the TV may reduce brightness. If adjustment does not resolve changes, test another source.

Sony
Depending on the TV and software, look for Ambient light sensor, Light sensor, Auto luminance level, or Ambient Optimisation. Check that the sensor is not blocked. On Sony OLED TVs, brightness may gradually reduce when an image that could cause image retention is displayed. Consider that a possible protective behavior, not proof that the TV is defective.
LG
Check Energy Saving or other power-saving controls. LG describes Energy Saving as reducing power use by adjusting peak screen brightness; supported models may have an Auto option that detects ambient lighting. If the screen remains dark, LG’s OLED troubleshooting guidance suggests checking power-saving controls and trying Standard instead of Eco picture mode. Paths differ across webOS generations, and picture settings may differ by input.

TCL
Some TCL models place Automatic Dimming or Adaptive Brightness under Picture > Eye Health Protection > Adaptive Brightness. TCL notes that settings vary by model. A separate description for the TCL QM9K covers adaptive brightness in screensaver or Ambient Display behavior; do not assume that feature or path applies to all TCL TVs.

If dimming occurs only in Screensaver or Ambient Display mode, Google TV’s help describes brightness adjusting to room brightness, including dimming in dark rooms. This does not explain dimming during active video.

Hisense
A Hisense Japan FAQ recommends trying the ambient-brightness detection control when screen brightness changes. It also describes software-update improvements for a listed group of models. That advice is specific to the Japanese support context and those models, not a universal update fix.
