TV content recognition is technology that identifies the audio or video playing on a television, usually by matching signal characteristics or embedded identifiers to known content. It is commonly called automatic content recognition (ACR). ACR describes a recognition capability—not, by itself, a particular data-collection practice. What a system samples, why it identifies content, and what happens to the resulting match depend on its implementation.
What does TV content recognition mean?
Automatic content recognition analyzes media playing through a TV or receiver and tries to match it to known content. A match can identify a program, clip, or other media. Depending on the system, that identification may support services such as content recovery, contextual advertising, measurement, personalization, or rights-related identification; an ACR system does not necessarily perform all of these tasks.
The term alone does not tell you which signals are sampled, how often recognition occurs, where matching takes place, what information is retained, who receives it, or which purposes apply. Those details require the privacy information and settings for the specific manufacturer, model, feature, and region.

How does ACR identify what is playing?
ACR is commonly described as using fingerprinting, watermarking, or a combination of the two.

Fingerprinting analyzes existing signal characteristics
A fingerprinting system derives a compact signature from distinguishing properties already present in the audio or video, then compares it with a reference database. It does not add information to the original media file. Some systems can recognize content that is similar to, or altered from, a reference item. IAB UK’s ACR glossary and the EUIPO technical guide to fingerprinting describe this distinction.
Watermarking embeds an identifier
A watermarking system places an identifying code in the media. A compatible receiver or service can recover that code and use it to identify the content. Unlike fingerprinting, watermarking adds an identifier to the media itself.

Can ACR recognize content over HDMI?
It can, depending on the implementation. ACR is not limited to a TV’s broadcast tuner or built-in apps: a system may analyze content arriving through an external input, such as HDMI. That capability does not mean every TV recognizes every HDMI source.
One standards-based example is ATSC A/336, a content-recovery standard. ATSC describes a receiver identifying content that was not delivered directly in the broadcast signal and then recovering it over broadband. The described case includes a receiver connected through HDMI when it has only uncompressed audio and video; the listed recognition methods use ATSC 3.0 audio/video watermarks or fingerprinting. See the ATSC A/336 content-recovery standard listing for the standard’s scope.

What can a TV do with a recognition match?
The purpose depends on the product and service. For example, ACR can help a standards-based receiver recover related content, while an advertising system may use recognition to support contextual advertising. Industry and technical sources also describe uses such as measurement, monetization, and rights-related identification. These are possible applications, not a checklist of functions built into every TV.
What does ACR mean for smart TV privacy?
ACR can involve identifying viewing activity, but the name alone does not establish what data a particular TV collects or shares. Check the privacy notice and on-device controls for your model and country rather than assuming all manufacturers use the same process.

Samsung’s stated US feature and controls
Samsung’s current US support page describes its ACR feature as optional and says it runs when enabled through the Viewing Information Services choice. Samsung says information associated with the feature may include viewing history, a personalized service identifier, and IP address. It also says it does not record or watch the displayed content and that viewers can change the setting on the TV. These are Samsung’s statements about its feature, not a description of all smart TVs. Consult Samsung’s ACR support page for its current guidance.

A 2024 study by Anselmi and colleagues tested Samsung and LG smart TV platforms in the UK and US. The researchers reported that ACR functioned when the tested TVs were used as external displays, that opting out stopped ACR-server traffic in their tests, and that behavior differed between the two countries. Those findings apply to the devices, configurations, regions, and test conditions examined; they are not a guarantee about every brand, model, software version, or location. The study is available from the ACM Internet Measurement Conference.

How to assess an ACR feature
When evaluating a particular TV or recognition service, look for the following specifics in its privacy notice and settings:
Quick Recap
- Recognition method: Does it use fingerprints, watermarks, or both?
- Content path: Does recognition apply to broadcast reception, built-in apps, HDMI inputs, or another source?
- Purpose: Is the stated use content recovery, advertising, measurement, personalization, rights identification, or something else?
- Data handling: What information is associated with recognition, where does matching occur, how long is information retained, and with whom is it shared?
- Controls: How is the feature enabled, and where can you change its setting or opt out on your model and in your region?
