The safest choice is the television’s original carton with all of its fitted inserts. That packaging was designed around the screen’s dimensions and vulnerable edges. If the carton or inserts are missing, use a specialty, expandable TV moving box with foam corner pieces that fits the screen’s diagonal measurement and depth. A plain moving box is not equivalent unless you create a rigid, well-padded support system inside it.
Whichever package you use, remove or secure loose parts, prevent the television from shifting, keep the carton upright, and brace it in the vehicle. Your television’s own manual overrides general moving advice when it gives model-specific instructions.
Quick verdict: original packaging wins, specialty TV boxes are the fallback
There are three materially different choices:
| Option | Best use | Protection you can reasonably expect | Checks required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original TV carton with original inserts | The carton and molded protective pieces are intact | Best fit because the packaging was designed for that television | Confirm every insert is present, undamaged and positioned as the manufacturer intended |
| Expandable specialty TV moving box with foam corners | The original carton is unavailable or incomplete | Good fallback when the kit fits the screen and the remaining voids are padded | Measure screen diagonal and TV depth; verify the exact kit’s dimensions and current contents |
| Plain standard moving box | Only when no fitted option is available | Not established as equivalent to either fitted option; protection depends on the support you build inside | Provide rigid support, corner protection, gap filling and a way to stop the TV moving |
No published comparison in the cited guidance gives a defensible damage percentage for these three choices. The practical difference is fit and movement control, not a guaranteed failure rate. U-Haul’s flat-screen moving guide, last updated June 28, 2022, recommends the original packaging when it is available and a specialty TV box when it is not.

A television carton is engineered around one model or a closely related model family. Its molded foam or fiber inserts hold the frame away from the carton walls, protect corners, and distribute pressure over stronger parts of the chassis. The screen itself is a large, relatively fragile panel; a point load against its face or edge can cause damage even when the carton looks intact.

The benefit exists only if the fitted pieces are still there. A bare original carton with missing foam is simply an oversized cardboard container. U-Haul specifically advises adding protection when inserts have been lost rather than treating the empty carton as the original protective system.
Inventory the original packaging before using it
- Find the top, bottom, side and corner inserts and compare them with the television’s shape.
- Check that foam has not cracked, compressed permanently or lost a locking tab.
- Inspect the carton for crushed corners, water damage, torn hand holes or a weakened bottom seam.
- Make sure the carton still closes without forcing the screen against a flap.
- Look in the carton for the model’s packing diagrams; Philips manufacturer material, for example, tells owners to save the front cardboard for moving or shipping and shows model-specific packing.
If an insert is missing, do not improvise by placing a loose object against the display. Replace the complete protective arrangement with a specialty kit or construct padding that supports the frame and corners without touching the panel.
When a specialty TV moving box is the right replacement
An expandable TV moving box is designed for the common situation in which the original carton was discarded. U-Haul describes a nested, two-box kit with foam corner pieces. The outer box expands to accommodate several screen-size ranges, but those ranges and the box’s depth limit belong to that particular product; they are not universal dimensions for every television box.

Measure before buying or opening the kit
- Measure the screen diagonally. Measure from one visible screen corner to the opposite visible corner, not from the outside of a stand or bezel. Record the result in the unit used by the kit listing.
- Measure the television’s maximum depth. Include any rear bulge, cable cover or permanently attached component that will remain in place during the move.
- Record width and height as a fit check. A diagonal number alone cannot reveal whether the frame will hit a box wall or flap.
- Compare all measurements with the exact kit specification. Product contents and availability can change, so check the current listing rather than relying on an older setup illustration.
- Allow room for the corner pieces and padding. A box that barely fits the bare television may be too small once the protective foam is installed.
Do not trim foam or force the box closed to make an undersized kit work. Pressure on the frame can transfer to the panel, while an over-tight closure can split the carton during lifting.
Why a plain moving box is a risky substitute
A standard moving carton is built to contain household goods, not to suspend a large glass or OLED/LCD panel. Its flat walls do not automatically protect corners, and its internal volume often leaves enough room for the television to slide, rotate or strike the cardboard during acceleration and braking.

That does not make every ordinary box unusable. It means the box itself supplies little of the protection. If circumstances leave you no alternative, you must add a complete internal support system: non-abrasive protection over the screen, rigid separation from the walls, substantial corner support and padding that fills voids without pressing on the panel. A blanket or stretch wrap by itself is not an established substitute for fitted inserts.
Conditions that make a plain box unacceptable
- The carton is wider or taller than the television by enough to permit visible movement.
- The screen or bezel can touch a wall, flap, strap or hard packing material.
- There is no way to support the four corners independently.
- The bottom seam bows when the packed television is lifted.
- The package cannot be kept upright and braced in the vehicle.
If any of these conditions applies, stop and obtain a fitted kit or a replacement carton rather than relying on extra tape.

The following procedure combines the general moving instructions from U-Haul with the model-specific caution found in manufacturer manuals. Use your television manual whenever it differs.
1. Read the model manual first
Look for sections covering transport, lifting, stand removal and original packaging. Manuals can specify where the set may be held, whether a stand must be removed, and which side must face up. LG’s 98UB98-U manual, for example, says to keep the television upright; that instruction applies to the relevant model, not automatically to every television.
2. Shut down and disconnect
Turn the set off normally, unplug it and allow it to cool. Remove HDMI, antenna, Ethernet, optical-audio and power cables. Coil each cable loosely and place it with the remote and any small adapters. Do not leave a cable trapped between the screen and an insert.

3. Remove the stand only as instructed
Many televisions are safer to pack with the pedestal or feet removed, but the screw locations and lifting points vary. Follow the manual rather than guessing. Put the screws in a labeled bag with the remote and cables so they cannot scratch the panel or disappear in the moving truck.
4. Protect the display surface
Use the manufacturer’s screen cover if one remains. Otherwise, follow the packing method specified for your model and keep any material touching the screen clean, soft and free of grit. Do not place tape directly on the display or bezel; adhesive residue and concentrated pulling force can damage finishes.
5. Install fitted inserts or corner foam
With the original carton, place the bottom insert, position the television exactly as shown in the packing diagram, then install the top and side pieces. With an expandable kit, fit the foam corners to the television as directed before closing the inner box. The corners should hold the frame, not press hard against the active panel.
6. Eliminate remaining voids
Check all four sides and both faces for movement. U-Haul’s guidance suggests furniture pads or towels for filling a gap. Use enough soft material to stop shifting, but do not wedge it so tightly that it bends the frame or pushes on the screen. The objective is immobilization, not compression.
7. Close and seal the carton
Follow the kit’s assembly order so the inner and outer boxes overlap as intended. Seal every required seam with strong packing tape and reinforce a weak bottom seam. Do not use tape as a substitute for a correctly sized box or missing corner support.

8. Label orientation and handling points
Mark the upright side and indicate which face contains the screen. Labels do not prevent abuse, but they make the intended orientation clear to anyone loading or unloading the vehicle. Keep handles clear and do not attach a strap over the display face.
Keep the packed TV upright and stop it moving
U-Haul recommends transporting a boxed flat-screen television upright. Upright handling keeps the panel in the orientation for which its frame and inserts were designed and reduces the chance that the screen will flex under its own weight. A surfaced LG manual gives the same upright instruction for its applicable model. Because designs differ, the television’s manual remains the controlling source.
Position it in the vehicle
- Place the box between sturdy, flat objects that are tall enough to support it without contacting the screen area.
- Keep heavy furniture, toolboxes and loose bins away from the carton’s face and corners.
- Prevent sliding at the floor with blocking or a restrained load; do not rely on the carton’s friction.
- Where the vehicle provides suitable rails, U-Haul suggests tying the box to the rails so it cannot tip or shift. Use straps around strong structural areas and add padding under the strap path.
- Leave clearance above the box so another load cannot fall onto it.
Have a second person help with large or awkward screens. Coordinate lifting commands, keep the carton vertical and avoid pivoting on one lower corner.
Can you lay a TV flat?
Do not make a flat position your default. The cited moving guidance says to keep the television box upright, and the LG manual cited above also specifies upright transport for that model. A flat position can allow the panel to flex when the vehicle bounces or when weight is placed on the carton. If your own manual explicitly permits another orientation, follow that model-specific direction; otherwise, transport upright.
Moving a TV is not the same as shipping one
UPS’s “How To Ship a TV” instructions address parcel shipping, where a package may pass through automated handling, conveyor transfers and multiple loading points. Those recommendations can help you think about cushioning and external strength, but they should not be presented as a universal rule for a household move in your own vehicle.

For a local or self-directed move, the critical controls are fitted support, no internal movement, upright orientation and restraint in the vehicle. If you hand the television to a carrier, read that carrier’s current packaging and liability requirements separately; a household-moving setup may not satisfy a parcel carrier’s rules.
Use the manufacturer’s instructions as the tie-breaker
General guides cannot account for every screen construction, stand design or carton. Save any original packing diagram, front cardboard piece and protective cover you still have. Philips documentation specifically advises retaining the front cardboard for future moving or shipping, while LG documentation illustrates upright handling for a particular television.
When instructions conflict, apply this order:
- Follow the manual for the exact model and regional edition.
- Use the original packing diagram and inserts if they are complete.
- Follow the assembly instructions supplied with the exact specialty kit.
- Use general moving guidance only for gaps the model-specific material does not address.
Pre-departure inspection checklist
- The screen is off, cool, disconnected and free of loose accessories.
- The stand is removed or secured exactly as the manual specifies.
- Original inserts or specialty corner pieces are installed in their intended positions.
- No hard object, strap or screw can touch the screen or bezel.
- Remaining gaps are padded without pressing on the panel.
- All seams are sealed and the bottom can support the packed weight.
- The upright face and top are clearly marked.
- The carton is braced against sliding, tipping and falling cargo.
- Two people are available for a large or awkward television.
What to do when something goes wrong
The original carton is present but the foam is missing
Do not treat the carton as ready to use. Obtain a specialty kit or recreate a complete, non-compressive support system that holds the frame and corners away from every wall. If you cannot verify that arrangement, postpone the move until you have a fitted solution.

Do not cut the television’s frame, remove structural foam or force the flaps closed. Return the kit and select one whose diagonal, width, height and depth limits leave room for the protective pieces.
The packed television rattles when shaken gently
Open the package and find the source of movement. Add suitable soft void filling or reposition the corner pieces. A rattle indicates that the screen can gain momentum inside the carton; more exterior tape will not solve that problem.
The box must share space with furniture
Place the television between stable, flat items and keep heavy or sharp cargo away from its face. Tie the carton to an appropriate rail or other structural restraint, and inspect the load again after the first short drive.
You no longer have the model manual
Identify the exact model number from the rear label or purchase record and obtain the manufacturer’s manual before removing the stand or choosing an orientation. Do not infer lifting points from another television that looks similar.
Bottom line for the box decision
Choose the original carton only when its fitted inserts and structural condition are intact. Choose an expandable specialty TV box with foam corners when the original packaging is missing, after checking diagonal screen size, depth and the exact kit’s current fit limits. Treat a plain moving box as an emergency container that requires you to supply the missing corner support, padding and immobilization yourself. In every case, follow the television’s manual, keep the package upright and secure it so the load cannot shift.
