Yes—a supported router can share a USB flash drive or external hard drive with devices on your home Wi-Fi. The router acts as network storage, but a USB port alone does not guarantee file sharing: support depends on the exact model and firmware.

What a router’s USB port can do

On routers with the right feature, connecting a drive lets other devices on the local network access its files. The router may offer file sharing through a protocol such as Samba/SMB, FTP, or WebDAV. Some models also provide a media server that makes music, photos, or video discoverable by compatible players.

These functions are not interchangeable. A media server such as DLNA is designed to make supported media available to compatible clients; it is not necessarily a general-purpose way to browse and manage every file. GL.iNet documents Samba, WebDAV, and DLNA options, while TP-Link describes storage sharing, FTP, and media-server features on specific models (GL.iNet’s network storage guide; Archer AX6000 V1 USB settings; TL-WR902AC V3 USB settings).

Check compatibility before connecting a drive

  • Confirm storage sharing for your exact model and firmware. A USB port may be intended for another feature or may not support storage sharing at all. Check the model’s manual or official support page; similarly named models and firmware versions can differ. TP-Link notes that some routers have a USB port without USB storage-sharing support (TP-Link USB storage access guidance).
  • Check supported file systems. Compatibility varies by model. For example, the Archer AX6000 V1 guide lists FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, and HFS+ for its described USB hard-drive use, while the TL-WR902AC V3 guide lists FAT32 and NTFS. These are model-specific examples, not a universal router standard (Archer AX6000 V1 guide; TL-WR902AC V3 guide).
  • Check power requirements. A router’s USB port may not supply enough power for an external hard drive. GL.iNet warns that a drive’s power consumption can cause malfunction, and TP-Link advises connecting the drive’s supplied external power when required (GL.iNet network storage guide; Archer AX6000 V1 guide).
  • Check the connection method and client support. Confirm which protocol the router offers and whether your computer, phone, or media player can use it. A DLNA-capable media client, for example, is not the same as a file browser.

Do not reformat a drive just to try to make it work until the router’s guide confirms which file systems it supports. Formatting can erase the drive’s contents.

Set up local access over Wi-Fi

  1. Find the router’s exact model and firmware details. Use its official manual to confirm that USB storage sharing is supported and identify the available sharing feature.
  2. Prepare the drive. Check its file system against the router’s supported list and determine whether it needs its own power supply.
  3. Connect the drive and enable sharing. Wait for the router to recognize it, then open the router’s documented settings page or app and enable the local file-sharing or media-server feature you want. The interface and labels vary by model.
  4. Connect from another device on the home network. Follow the router’s instructions for its address and access method, such as SMB/Samba, FTP, WebDAV, or a compatible media player. Use only methods the router actually supports.
  5. Eject the drive before unplugging it. Use the router’s eject, disconnect, or safe-removal control where provided. TP-Link’s model guides recommend safe removal to reduce the risk of data damage (Archer AX6000 V1 guide; TL-WR902AC V3 guide).

Local sharing is not the same as remote access

Accessing a drive from a device on your home Wi-Fi is different from reaching it over the internet while away. Remote access is optional and model-dependent, and it may require separate configuration. For example, NETGEAR says its described Nighthawk ReadySHARE settings have HTTPS and FTP access over the internet disabled by default; that example applies to the documented Nighthawk settings, not every router (NETGEAR ReadySHARE access settings).

Before enabling any internet-facing access, read the router’s security guidance and understand which accounts, protocols, and access controls apply. Do not assume a local sharing setting makes the drive safely or automatically available from outside your home.

When router storage is—and isn’t—a good fit

Router-based sharing can be a convenient way to make files available to devices already on your network, provided your router supports the feature and your clients can use its access method. It can also support media playback when both the router and player support the relevant media-server protocol.

The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a general transfer-speed figure for router USB sharing. Performance depends on the particular router, drive, connection, protocol, and client, so there is no model-independent basis here to claim it matches a dedicated NAS or suits demanding workloads. For those needs, look for performance evidence for the specific hardware and workload rather than relying on the presence of a USB port.

Troubleshoot when the drive does not appear

  • Recheck the feature support. Make sure the exact router model and firmware support storage sharing, not just a USB connector.
  • Verify the file system. Compare the drive’s format with the model guide’s supported formats before considering a backup and reformat.
  • Check power and enclosure compatibility. Provide external power if the drive requires it. Some USB enclosures may not work with some routers.
  • Confirm the correct access path. The router may require you to enable a sharing service or use a particular address and protocol; a media client may not show files meant for general file browsing.
  • Remove the drive safely. Use the router’s control before disconnecting it, rather than unplugging it while files may be in use.

Router manufacturers document these features differently, so the exact model guide is the authority for supported formats, power needs, access methods, and controls.
