You can turn selected webpage text into Anki flashcards with a browser extension, but the one-click part is usually just the capture step. For a direct connection to Anki Desktop, the documented workflow also requires AnkiConnect and Anki running on the same computer. Select a short passage, make it test one clear idea, review the card fields, then save it to your deck.
What you need for a direct browser-to-Anki workflow
- Anki Desktop installed and open.
- AnkiConnect installed in Anki for extensions that send cards directly to the desktop app.
- A compatible browser extension, installed from its official store listing.
- A deck and note type chosen for the cards you want to create.
AnkiConnect is an Anki add-on that exposes an HTTP API to external applications. It starts when Anki launches and, by default, binds to 127.0.0.1, limiting access to the same computer unless its configuration is changed. The reviewed extension listing identifies http://127.0.0.1:8765 as a connection check; that endpoint is local, not a public website. Anki’s add-ons manual warns that add-ons can modify arbitrary parts of Anki’s code and that updates may break compatibility with older add-ons. Check current compatibility before relying on the connection.
Make a card from a webpage
- Install and open Anki Desktop. Use Anki’s add-on installation flow to install AnkiConnect, then restart Anki if prompted.
- Install a browser extension. Check its developer, permissions, current compatibility information, and data-handling disclosures in the official store listing.
- Connect to Anki. Keep Anki running while you use an extension that sends cards through AnkiConnect. If the extension reports a connection problem, check that Anki is open and that its documented local connection check responds.
- Choose a deck and note type. The deck determines where new cards go; the note type determines which fields are available and how they are used to generate cards.
- Select a concise passage. Highlight enough source text to preserve the context, but avoid copying an entire article into a card.
- Write and inspect the card. Test one retrievable idea, add context in an appropriate field, and review both question and answer sides before saving. If the extension offers generated text, check it for accuracy and edit it before adding it to your collection.
- Save the card and confirm it is in Anki. Review the resulting note and card in Anki rather than assuming a successful-looking browser action captured every field as intended.
Choose the capture workflow that fits
The reviewed store listings describe two broad approaches. Their features are listing claims, not independently tested results, and availability or behavior may change.
| Workflow | What the listing describes | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Selection with manual entry | The reviewed Anki Chrome listing describes highlighting text, creating a card, and connecting directly to Anki Desktop through AnkiConnect. | It gives you direct control over the fields you enter, but the documented direct-connection route depends on AnkiConnect and Anki Desktop being available. |
| Persistent side panel | A separate listing describes a browser side panel, card preview, highlight-to-send, optional AI autofill, and media upload. | Preview and autofill may reduce typing, but generated content still needs review. The listing’s feature descriptions do not establish that every feature works on every page or configuration. |
Before installing either kind, inspect the requested browser permissions and the developer’s privacy disclosures. One reviewed listing says its developer will not collect or use user data; that is a store disclosure, not an independent privacy audit. A store listing also cannot establish how an extension behaves in every browser setup.

Shape notes so they make useful cards
Anki stores information in notes and fields. A card type determines which fields appear on the question and answer sides, and one note can generate more than one card. That makes it possible to keep a source excerpt or context in a field while writing a focused prompt in another, instead of treating a copied webpage as a finished flashcard.
- Ask for one thing. A card should prompt a specific answer rather than an entire section of the source.
- Keep necessary context. Include enough detail to identify what the question refers to, especially if the highlighted sentence depends on surrounding text.
- Check both sides. Make sure the question is clear without accidentally revealing the answer, and that the answer is accurate and complete enough to be useful.
- Use note types intentionally. Check which fields the selected card type uses and whether it generates one card or multiple cards from the note.
Sync the collection and protect it from conflicts
AnkiWeb is Anki’s companion service for online reviewing and synchronization. If you want the collection across devices, sync through AnkiWeb. Anki’s synchronization documentation cautions that some structural changes cannot be merged automatically; when a sync conflict requires choosing a copy, back up the collection before resolving it. Avoid treating a one-way sync prompt as a routine confirmation if you are unsure which version should replace the other.

What can change over time
Browser-extension features, store disclosures, availability, and compatibility can change. Anki also cautions that add-ons may stop working after Anki updates. Recheck the current extension listing and add-on compatibility information before building an important workflow around them; the described features are not a guarantee of behavior on every webpage or browser configuration.
