You can give Valheim a convincing MMORPG structure, but no single mod supplies every MMO feature. The most reliable approach is a layered server profile: use Valheim MMORPG Core for XP, levels and attributes; add WayOfTheGods for classes and combat roles; then choose either WackyEpicMMOSystem for quests and social progression or ImmersiveTrader for contracts, cargo and reputation. Add one layer at a time, keep server and client versions synchronized, and test the profile on a copy of your world before inviting players.
What an MMORPG-style Valheim server needs
Vanilla Valheim already has exploration, bosses, equipment tiers and a persistent world, but it does not provide the systems players normally associate with an MMORPG: character levels, repeatable XP, defined roles, quests, social groups, a player economy and progression that can continue after the final boss. The mods below cover those layers separately.
- Progression: XP, levels, attributes and enemy scaling.
- Roles: classes, subclasses, talents, active abilities and support functions such as healing or tanking.
- Quests and social play: quest hooks, group XP, friends-list features and skill requirements.
- Economy: contracts, cargo, reputation, cooldowns and trader progression.
Because these systems can modify the same player data or combat calculations, stacking every RPG mod at once is a poor starting point. Build a minimal profile, confirm that it works, and expand it in layers.
Best overall architecture
Recommended core stack
For a persistent community server, start with Valheim MMORPG Core. Its description identifies it as a BepInEx plugin that adds MMO-style progression. Its feature set includes XP for defeating creatures, visible creature levels, biome- and player-based level generation, enemy-stat scaling, Strength, Vitality, Defense and Agility attributes, attribute points, an RPG HUD and server-tunable configuration.
Add WayOfTheGods only after the core progression is stable. It supplies six classes, 36 subclasses, unified talent trees, active abilities, summons, healing, tanking and shapeshifting. This is the strongest class-and-ability layer in the set, but it has a strict multiplayer requirement: the mod must be installed on the dedicated server and every client, and all players must use matching major and minor versions.
Choose one additional direction rather than installing every alternative:
- Quest-and-social direction: use WackyEpicMMOSystem when quests, an MMO-like friends list, group XP and skill combinations matter more than a trading economy.
- Economy direction: use ImmersiveTrader when you want contracts, cargo, reputation, cooldowns and trader progression based on each player’s state.
Do not add EpicMMOSystem to this initial profile. It offers shared group XP, custom-mob XP, an XP bar, monster levels, an MMO-like friends list and quest hooks, but its Thunderstore listing currently marks the package as deprecated. That makes its maintenance and compatibility risk higher than the other choices.
Why a dedicated server is the practical model
A dedicated server keeps the world running when the owner is offline and gives you one place to manage configuration, backups and mod versions. Iron Gate’s Steam dedicated-server guide, published April 11, 2024, documents the supported server setup and relevant console commands. The guide is for the Steam version; verify the instructions against the edition and operating system you actually use.
Iron Gate states that Valheim has no official mod support. The studio is positive about community modding, but a modded server remains a community-supported configuration. A mod can also notify players that they are running a modded game, so tell participants to expect this behavior.

How to build the server profile
1. Decide the progression rules before installing anything
Write down the experience you want players to have. A slower, dangerous world can use modest XP gains and restrained enemy scaling. A community server with many casual players may need faster early progression and safer catch-up settings. Decide whether levels should make a new character meaningfully stronger, whether enemy levels should track the biome, and how much the system should change Valheim’s normal difficulty curve.

Disable duplicate XP, level or attribute features in another mod whenever configuration permits.
2. Prepare a clean BepInEx profile
- Install the BepInEx build required by the current Valheim mod releases, following each release’s documented prerequisites.
- Create a separate profile directory for the MMORPG server instead of modifying a vanilla installation you may need for troubleshooting.
- Install the dedicated-server files for the Steam edition according to Iron Gate’s guide, then launch the unmodded server once to confirm that the world starts and saves.
- Stop the server and back up the world files and configuration directory. Keep a dated copy outside the live server folder.
- Install Valheim MMORPG Core and its listed dependencies. Start the server, join with one test client and confirm that the RPG HUD, XP events and creature levels appear.
Do not copy a large collection of plugins into the folder at this stage. A clean baseline makes a failed update diagnosable.
3. Add classes and roles
- Install WayOfTheGods on the server and on every client that will join.
- Give every player the same major and minor version. Do not assume that “latest” downloads are identical if players install at different times.
- Start with a small test group and verify class selection, talents, active abilities, summons and role effects.
- Check that class skills do not duplicate or conflict with Valheim MMORPG Core’s attribute bonuses. If both systems alter the same stat, keep one system authoritative.
Publish the exact mod package and versions to your players. A server-side installation alone is not enough for WayOfTheGods.
4. Add quests or an economy, not both immediately
For a quest-first server, install WackyEpicMMOSystem and its required Groups dependency. Confirm that the dedicated quest button appears, group XP is awarded as expected and skill combinations do not block ordinary progression unexpectedly. Its Thunderstore version page lists version 1.9.71 as of October 15, 2026; that number is a dated snapshot, not a promise that it will remain current.

For an economy-first server, install ImmersiveTrader and every dependency required by its release. Test contracts, cargo delivery, reputation changes and cooldowns with two accounts. Because progression is based on personal player state and validated by the server, test reconnects and failed deliveries before opening the economy to the full community.
5. Document the player onboarding process
Give players one page containing the Valheim build, BepInEx requirement, mod filenames and versions, installation location, world address, character rules and a recovery contact. Explain which systems are optional and which are mandatory. For WayOfTheGods, explicitly state that clients must match the server’s major and minor version.
6. Test updates as migrations
- Stop the live server and create a new world and character backup.
- Clone the server profile into a staging directory.
- Update one mod at a time, starting with dependencies.
- Launch the staging server and test login, movement, combat, XP, class abilities, quests or trading, saving and reconnecting.
- Only after the staging test succeeds should you update the live profile and distribute the matching client package.
Never treat a gameplay-mod update as a harmless cosmetic patch. Changes to level formulas, attributes, inventories or economy data can affect existing saves.
Choosing the right stack
For a classic party-based MMO feel
Use Valheim MMORPG Core plus WayOfTheGods. Assign players to complementary classes, keep enemy scaling conservative during the first biome and let the class system provide specialization. This combination supplies the clearest tank, healer, damage and utility roles without requiring a separate quest or economy system.

For a questing and social server
Use Valheim MMORPG Core, WayOfTheGods and WackyEpicMMOSystem. The Core supplies persistent combat progression, WayOfTheGods supplies builds, and WackyEpicMMOSystem adds quests, group XP, a friends-list concept and skill-gating hooks. Verify that only one mod controls each XP and level calculation.

For a trade and delivery community
Use Valheim MMORPG Core, WayOfTheGods and ImmersiveTrader. Treat contracts and cargo as activities that send players back into the world rather than as a replacement for combat progression. Start with generous failure recovery and short routes, then tune cooldowns and reputation once you know how quickly players accumulate resources.
For an experimental legacy profile
EpicMMOSystem can be evaluated only in a disposable test world because Thunderstore marks it deprecated. Do not make it the foundation of a long-running community world unless you have verified that its exact release, dependencies and save behavior work with your current Valheim build.
Compatibility and difficulty pitfalls
Overlapping XP and level systems
Two mods that both award XP or generate levels can produce double rewards, conflicting HUD values or inconsistent enemy scaling. Pick one progression authority and disable overlapping options wherever possible. If a mod offers no switch, remove it from the profile rather than trying to balance two unknown formulas.
Client/server mismatch
Symptoms include connection rejection, missing interfaces, invisible abilities or players seeing different values. Confirm the Valheim build, BepInEx version, mod version and dependency list on both sides. WayOfTheGods specifically requires installation on the server and every client with matching major and minor versions.
Difficulty spikes
Biome-based levels, player-based level generation and enemy-stat scaling can multiply the danger of an area that was balanced for vanilla characters. Test each biome with a fresh character and with an established character. Adjust scaling before increasing player damage or XP; otherwise the server can become a race to overpower enemies rather than a measured progression game.

Save-data damage
Large gameplay mods can write persistent character, world or economy state. Keep rotating backups, label them with the mod profile and date, and never test an unverified update on the only copy of a world. If a new profile fails, stop the server, restore the previous profile and backup, and reproduce the problem in staging.

Dependency drift
Quest, group and trader mods may depend on libraries or companion mods that update independently. Record the complete package list, not just the headline mods. When an update breaks the server, compare the working and failing manifests to identify the first changed dependency.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Server will not start: remove the last-added plugin, inspect the BepInEx log for the first error, then verify the plugin’s dependencies and required game version.
- Players connect but see no RPG HUD: confirm that the client has the required client-side files and that the server loaded the progression plugin successfully.
- Class abilities are missing: verify WayOfTheGods is installed on both server and client and that major and minor versions match.
- Group XP does not work: check that the Groups dependency required by WackyEpicMMOSystem is installed and loaded on every required side.
- Trading progress resets: stop the server, restore the latest known-good backup and check ImmersiveTrader’s dependency and player-state files before trying again.
- Enemies are unfairly strong: reduce level or stat-scaling settings in staging and retest each biome before changing class damage.
- An update causes errors: roll back the changed mod and its dependencies as a set; do not mix files from the old and new profiles.
What this setup can and cannot promise
This architecture can create persistent XP, visible levels, specialized classes, repeatable quest or trading activities and stronger social reasons to revisit earlier biomes. It does not turn Valheim into an officially supported MMORPG, and the cited mod pages do not provide a universal compatibility guarantee for every combination or future Valheim update.
There are also no reliable independent player-count, conversion-rate or performance benchmarks establishing how many people a particular mod stack can support. Plan capacity and stability from your own staged tests rather than from an invented benchmark.

Make a complete world and character backup first, then test the mod profile on a copy. Gameplay mods can change persistent progression or economy data, so there is no universal guarantee that a vanilla save will remain unaffected.
Should I install EpicMMOSystem and WackyEpicMMOSystem together?
No. They overlap in progression, XP and social features, while EpicMMOSystem is currently marked deprecated. Choose one system for a test profile and verify its dependencies before considering any additional layer.
Is this an official Iron Gate MMORPG mode?
No. Iron Gate says Valheim has no official mod support. These are community modifications that require independent version, backup and compatibility management.
