On a touchscreen Windows 11 device, enable fingertip handwriting at Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink > Handwriting, then turn on Write with your fingertip. The handwriting panel is a layout inside the touch keyboard, so you must still open the touch keyboard and choose that layout before writing with your finger.
What the Windows 11 fingertip setting actually does
Windows 11 includes a handwriting panel for entering text with either a digital pen or a fingertip. The panel belongs to the touch keyboard rather than operating as a separate desktop application. Enabling Write with your fingertip gives the panel permission to accept touch strokes; it does not automatically open the panel or make handwriting the active keyboard layout.
The feature is intended for a Windows 11 laptop, tablet or other Windows device with a working touchscreen. A conventional monitor or laptop without touch hardware cannot provide fingertip input through the touch keyboard. A pen may still be usable on compatible hardware, but that is a different input method from the fingertip option.
Microsoft describes the touch keyboard and its handwriting layout in its current guide, Get to know the touch keyboard. The setting and layout names below follow that guide.

Enable “Write with your fingertip”
Use the following path in Windows 11. You can complete it with a mouse, trackpad or touch; the setting is available even before you open the handwriting panel.
- Open Settings. Select Start, then select Settings. You can also search for Settings from Start if the icon is not pinned.
- Open the device settings. In the Settings window, select Bluetooth & devices.
- Open Pen & Windows Ink. Select Pen & Windows Ink in the Bluetooth & devices section.
- Expand Handwriting. Find the Handwriting section and expand it if its controls are collapsed.
- Allow finger writing. Select or turn on Write with your fingertip.
After this change, Windows can treat a finger stroke in the handwriting layout as handwriting input. You still need to display the touch keyboard and select its handwriting layout whenever you want to write.
Open the handwriting panel in Windows 11
There are two practical ways to bring up the touch keyboard. The first is tied to the text field where you want the words to appear; the second uses the touch-keyboard icon in the system tray.

Method 1: tap a text field
- Open an application or web page that accepts text.
- Tap inside the text field. On a touchscreen device, Windows may display the touch keyboard automatically.
- When the keyboard appears, open its layout choices.
- Select the Handwriting panel layout.
- Write in the panel with your fingertip. The recognized text is inserted into the text field that was active when you opened the keyboard.
If tapping the field does not display a keyboard, use the system-tray method below. The application must also have a text-entry location selected; tapping a non-editable area will not give the keyboard a destination for the text.
Method 2: select the Touch keyboard icon
- Look in the Windows system tray on the taskbar for the Touch keyboard icon.
- Select that icon to open the touch keyboard.
- Use the keyboard’s layout controls to choose Handwriting.
- Write with your fingertip in the panel while the desired text field has focus.
The icon may not be visible on every taskbar configuration. If it is missing, Microsoft provides separate guidance titled Enable and disable the touch keyboard in Windows; use that guidance to restore the icon before trying the layout selection again.
Choose the correct touch-keyboard layout
The touch keyboard offers more than one layout. Microsoft lists default, split, expanded standard and handwriting layouts. The handwriting panel is the one that provides a writing area; the other layouts are keyboard arrangements rather than the handwriting canvas.
| Layout | What it is for | Finger handwriting area |
|---|---|---|
| Default | Standard touch-keyboard arrangement | Not the handwriting panel |
| Split | Split touch-keyboard arrangement | Not the handwriting panel |
| Expanded standard | Expanded touch-keyboard arrangement | Not the handwriting panel |
| Handwriting | Handwriting-panel layout for pen or fingertip input | Yes |
The layout selector is separate from the fingertip permission. Turning on Write with your fingertip does not replace the default keyboard layout, so select Handwriting each time the touch keyboard opens in another layout.

Use a finger or a pen
The handwriting panel accepts either a compatible pen or a fingertip. The same panel can therefore support different input methods without changing applications. If a pen is available, you can write with it even when fingertip writing is disabled; the Write with your fingertip control specifically governs touch from a finger.
For finger input, keep the text field active while writing. If the panel appears but characters go nowhere, close it, tap the intended text field again, and reopen the handwriting layout. This restores a clear destination for the recognized text without changing the setting.
Language and layout limitations
Touch-keyboard behavior is not identical in every language. Microsoft notes that some layouts and swipe-based typing features are unavailable for certain languages. Consequently, a language change can alter which layout choices or typing features appear, even though the Handwriting setting remains in the same Windows settings path.
- If Handwriting is listed, select it to use the panel.
- If a layout or swipe feature is absent, do not assume the touchscreen or fingertip setting is broken; availability can depend on the selected language.
- Do not expect every keyboard arrangement to expose the same controls or behave identically across languages.
The reliable checks are the setting label, the presence of the touch keyboard, and the layout choices shown on your own device.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTroubleshoot when fingertip handwriting does not work
The handwriting panel is not accepting a finger
- Return to Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink.
- Expand Handwriting.
- Confirm that Write with your fingertip is selected.
- Open the touch keyboard again and explicitly choose the Handwriting layout.
A common cause is opening the touch keyboard successfully but leaving it in the default, split or expanded-standard layout. Those layouts do not provide the handwriting canvas.
The touch keyboard does not appear after tapping a field
First verify that the device has a touchscreen and that you tapped an editable text field. Then select the Touch keyboard icon in the system tray. If the icon is not present, use Microsoft’s separate touch-keyboard enable/disable instructions to make it available. The handwriting option cannot be selected until the touch keyboard itself is open.
The system-tray icon is missing
Windows may be hiding the icon or have the touch keyboard control disabled. Search Microsoft Support for Enable and disable the touch keyboard in Windows, follow the instructions for displaying the icon, and then return to the system tray. Once the keyboard opens, use its layout selector to choose Handwriting.

Handwriting is visible, but text is inserted in the wrong place
Recognition follows the active text field. Before writing, tap the exact box, message area or document location where the text should go. If focus was lost while switching layouts, tap the field again and reopen the handwriting panel. This is a focus issue rather than a need to re-enable the fingertip setting.

A layout or swipe option is unavailable
Check the current input language. Microsoft warns that some touch-keyboard layouts and swipe-based typing are not available in all languages. The absence of one option does not establish that fingertip handwriting is unavailable; look specifically for the Handwriting layout and test it in the selected language.
Turn fingertip handwriting off
To stop Windows from accepting finger strokes in the handwriting panel, return to Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink > Handwriting and turn off Write with your fingertip. The touch keyboard remains available for its other layouts, and a compatible pen can still be used where supported. Disabling this option affects fingertip input; it does not remove the touch keyboard.
A quick repeatable workflow
For regular use, the process is short once the setting is enabled:
- Tap the destination text field.
- If necessary, select the Touch keyboard icon in the system tray.
- Open the keyboard’s layout choices.
- Select Handwriting.
- Write with your fingertip, then continue editing the inserted text in the application.
If the workflow stops at any point, identify which element is missing: touchscreen capability, the touch-keyboard icon, the handwriting layout, or the fingertip permission. Each item is controlled separately, so checking them in that order is faster than repeatedly changing unrelated Pen & Windows Ink options.

What you should expect on a compatible device
- The device has a touchscreen that can receive touch input.
- Write with your fingertip is enabled under the Handwriting section of Pen & Windows Ink.
- The touch keyboard opens from a text field or its system-tray icon.
- The keyboard’s layout selector includes Handwriting for the current language.
- A finger stroke in that layout is accepted alongside pen input.
No paid application or accessory is required for these Windows 11 steps. The only hardware prerequisite identified by Microsoft is a Windows device with a touchscreen for touch-keyboard use.
