To use voice-to-text on a Galaxy phone or tablet, select a voice-input provider in Samsung Keyboard settings, then tap the keyboard’s microphone in any text field and speak. Samsung calls this feature “voice input.”
Choose a voice-input provider

Open Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default. Confirm Samsung Keyboard is selected if you want Samsung voice input.

Open Samsung Keyboard settings > Voice input, then choose Samsung voice input or Google Voice Typing. Samsung says its voice input is available only when using Samsung Keyboard. Samsung’s keyboard-settings guide and Samsung’s voice-input guidance describe these options.

If you need another language, look in the voice-input settings for language options. Samsung’s instructions describe enabling or downloading an offline language pack; availability can depend on the device and configuration. See Samsung’s keyboard-settings guide.

Dictate text with the keyboard microphone

Open an app and tap a text-entry field so Samsung Keyboard appears.

Tap the keyboard’s microphone. If prompted on first use, accept the applicable terms or grant the requested permission.

Speak when the microphone is active. Tap the microphone again or use the on-screen control to stop or pause, depending on your device’s interface. Samsung describes voice input in its Galaxy setup instructions and keyboard-settings guide.

Samsung voice input or Google Voice Typing?
Both appear as provider choices in Samsung’s documented settings. Choose between them based on which option is available on your device and your language or offline-language needs. Samsung’s guidance does not establish that either provider is more accurate, private, or faster, so there is no evidence-based reason here to rank one above the other.

If the microphone is missing

Check that Samsung Keyboard is the active keyboard, especially if you selected Samsung voice input.

Return to Samsung Keyboard settings > Voice input and verify that a provider is selected.

Look in the keyboard toolbar or keyboard settings for microphone or toolbar controls; its location can differ by model and software version.

If the labels do not match, search Settings for “Samsung Keyboard.” Samsung warns that screens and controls vary by model, software version, and region. Its Canadian keyboard-settings guide, last updated March 28, 2026, also notes that screen layouts may vary.

What to expect across Galaxy devices
The exact menu names, microphone placement, and on-screen recording controls are not identical on every Galaxy phone or tablet. The path above is a starting point; if your device uses different labels, Settings search for “Samsung Keyboard” is a practical way to locate the relevant controls. For device-specific instructions, consult Samsung support for your model.
