To turn off Narrator in Windows 10 or Windows 11, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter. If that shortcut is unavailable, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + N to open Narrator settings and switch Narrator off. To stop it returning automatically, change its startup options.
Turn Narrator off now

Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter. Microsoft documents this as the Narrator start/stop shortcut for Windows 10 and Windows 11. It works only when the option allowing the keyboard shortcut is enabled.

If the shortcut does not work, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + N to open Narrator settings, then turn the Narrator switch off.

You can also press Narrator key + Esc to exit Narrator. By default, the Narrator key is Caps Lock or Insert, though its assignment can be changed. See Microsoft’s complete Narrator guide for the available commands.

Stop Narrator from starting automatically
Open Narrator settings with Windows logo key + Ctrl + N, then expand the startup options. Turn off whichever setting applies to your situation:

Start Narrator after sign-in prevents it from launching when you sign in.

Turn off the option allowing the keyboard shortcut to start Narrator if you want to prevent accidental activation with Windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter.

Microsoft’s Narrator customization guidance describes these startup controls. Wording and layout can vary between updates, so use the Narrator settings page displayed on your device if a label differs.
Choose between stopping speech and turning Narrator off
These controls do different things:

| Ctrl | Stops Narrator’s current speech temporarily; it does not turn Narrator off. Microsoft’s Narrator basics guide lists this command. |
| Narrator key + Shift + S | Toggles speech output off while Narrator remains active. Braille output continues in speech-off mode. Microsoft lists this feature in its complete Narrator guide for an April 2026 release; availability may depend on the Windows update installed. |
| Windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter, the Narrator settings switch, or Narrator key + Esc | Stops or exits Narrator itself. |

If Narrator keeps coming back

Check both startup settings: before sign-in and after sign-in are separate options.

If it starts after an accidental keypress, disable the option that allows the keyboard shortcut to start Narrator.

If the shortcut does nothing, use the Narrator switch in settings; the shortcut may be disabled.
Microsoft’s procedural guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Interface labels can change with updates, so follow the controls visible in your installed version.
