To turn off Gmail’s built-in smart features on a computer, open Gmail → Settings → See all settings → General, find Smart features, and turn off “Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet.” That setting is separate from Workspace Gemini controls and the setting that manages saved Gemini Apps activity, so choose the control that matches what you want to stop.
Turn off Gmail, Chat, and Meet smart features
- Open Gmail on a computer and click Settings.
- Click See all settings.
- In the General tab, find Smart features.
- Turn off “Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet.”
Google says this change applies across signed-in devices and apps. If you do not see a change in the Gmail mobile app, update the app and check its account-specific settings; Google notes that some changes made on a computer may not be reflected in the mobile app. See Google’s explanation of smart features and controls.
What this Gmail setting switches off
Turning off this setting removes documented Gmail, Chat, and Meet experiences such as automatic email filtering and categorization, Smart Compose, Smart Reply, and summary cards. Some smart features have individual controls and may remain available.
Review Workspace and other Google product settings separately
If you also want to change Gemini experiences across Google Workspace, go to Gmail’s Settings → See all settings → General, find Google Workspace smart features, and select Manage Workspace smart feature settings. Review the controls for Smart features in Google Workspace and Smart features in other Google products. They are independent of the Gmail, Chat, and Meet setting.

The Workspace control governs cross-Workspace smart experiences, including Gemini features in Google Workspace. Turning it off disables the documented experiences tied to that setting. Google says Workspace Content and Activity will no longer be used to provide relevant smart features in the future or actively processed to improve them going forward. However, learnings from the improvement process may persist after the setting is turned off, as Google explains in its smart features and controls documentation.
Stop saving Gemini Apps activity to a personal Google Account
To manage saved conversations, use Gemini Apps Activity rather than Gmail’s smart-feature switch. In the Gemini web app, open Menu → Settings & help → Activity, or visit the Gemini activity page in My Activity. Choose Turn off to stop keeping activity going forward, or Turn off and delete activity to also delete existing saved activity. Turning off activity does not mean every interaction is deleted immediately: Google says conversations may still be saved with the account for up to 72 hours to provide the service and process feedback. This activity setting is not a Gmail setting and does not itself turn off Gemini in Gmail.
Work or school accounts and regional defaults
For a work or school account, the organization’s Workspace administrator controls Gemini Apps activity settings. Depending on the account, you may not be able to change retention settings or see the retention period. Google describes this distinction in its activity-management guidance.

Google says smart-feature settings are off by default for users in the European Economic Area, Japan, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Defaults can vary by region, so check the actual setting in your account instead of assuming it is on or off.

These controls address different goals. Changing one does not establish that Gemini or every Google AI feature is disabled throughout the account.
