You can add a Turn off display command to the Windows 11 desktop context menu with a registry file. It requests that the display turn off; it does not shut down Windows or put the PC to sleep. The command is not a per-monitor selector, and its behavior can vary with hardware, drivers, foreground activity, and display connections.
What the context-menu command does
The ElevenForum tutorial adds a command to the desktop right-click menu by creating a registry verb under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDesktopBackgroundShellTurnOffDisplay. The method uses a registry file; follow one complete recipe from the tutorial rather than mixing registry data or quoting from different forum posts. Before importing any registry file, open it in a text editor and check what keys and values it will add.
The command is based on Windows’ WM_SYSCOMMAND message. Microsoft documents WM_SYSCOMMAND as 0x0112 and SC_MONITORPOWER as 0xF170; for this system command, an lParam value of 2 requests that the display be shut off. Microsoft describes the function directly: “SC_MONITORPOWER Sets the state of the display.” The documented values explain the request, not a guarantee that every Windows 11 PC or monitor will respond identically. Microsoft Learn: WM_SYSCOMMAND message.

How to undo the change
The tutorial’s removal recipe deletes the TurnOffDisplay subkey at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDesktopBackgroundShellTurnOffDisplay. You can use its removal registry file after inspecting its contents, or remove that specific subkey in Registry Editor if you are comfortable editing the registry. Be precise: deleting a different key can affect unrelated context-menu entries or other Windows behavior.
What to check if it does not work

The item is missing: Confirm that the add file ran successfully and that you are right-clicking the desktop, not a folder or a File Explorer window. On a managed PC, an administrator-applied policy may disable shortcut menus. Microsoft documents the
NoViewContextMenupolicy as removing shortcut menus from the desktop and File Explorer; its existence does not mean that policy is set on your PC. Microsoft Learn: NoViewContextMenu policy.Rank #4

The menu item appears but the display stays on: The command requests a display state through Windows; hardware, drivers, active applications, and display connections can affect the result. The Microsoft API reference documents the request values, not uniform behavior across all systems.

You need to turn off one particular monitor: This context-menu method does not select an individual display. NirSoft’s MultiMonitorTool offers command-line controls for selected monitors; its monitor on/off operation requires DDC/CI support. See the MultiMonitorTool documentation for its options and requirements.

Desktop menu or per-monitor control?
| Approach | Scope | Dependency | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows desktop context-menu verb | Requests display shutoff; it is not a selected-monitor control. | Registry customization using Windows components. | Behavior can vary across hardware, drivers, activity, and display connections; current-build compatibility is not established by the tutorial. |
| NirSoft MultiMonitorTool | Can target a particular display. | Optional downloaded utility. | Its monitor on/off function requires DDC/CI support. |
Use the desktop menu when you want a quick display-off request from the desktop. Choose a per-monitor utility only if you need to target a specific display and your monitor supports the required control.
