You can reduce AI features on a new iPhone or Android phone by turning off the main AI controls, limiting assistant shortcuts, and reviewing which apps and data services are connected. There is no single switch that disables every AI feature: controls depend on your phone, software version, region, language, and apps. Use Settings search if a label or path differs, then check that the change took effect.
Before you start: decide what you want to limit
“Turn off AI” can mean different things: preventing an assistant from opening, disabling generated writing or images, hiding summaries, or limiting personalization and saved activity. The steps below address these separately. Not every setting applies to every phone, and some controls are available only on supported devices or after a feature has rolled out in your region.
On iPhone, Apple says Apple Intelligence uses generative models and outputs may vary; Apple Support advises checking important information for accuracy. 1. Decline optional AI and app connections during setup
When setup offers optional AI, personalization, or connected-app choices, select the least-connected option that suits you. On supported Gemini Intelligence phones, Google says you can choose which apps to connect or choose “Don’t connect.” You can also decide whether to enable Proactive Assistance, which may use selected on-device sources such as messages and screenshots. These setup options are specific to supported Gemini Intelligence phones, not a universal Android setting. Details are in Google’s Gemini Intelligence phone guide.

2. Turn off Apple Intelligence on a supported iPhone
Open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and turn off Apple Intelligence. This is the broadest iPhone control in the documented settings, but Apple also provides controls for individual features, so check those separately if you want to limit a particular function without switching off everything.
3. Disable summaries you do not want
If message, email, or notification summaries are your main concern, look for their individual controls rather than assuming the main Apple Intelligence switch is the only relevant setting. Apple identifies separate controls for features such as summaries and notifications, along with smart replies, voicemail suggestions, and Journal prompts. Names and availability can differ by iOS version and device. Use Settings search for “summary,” “notifications,” or the feature name if you do not see it in the expected location.

4. Restrict writing tools and AI image features with Screen Time
To block selected Apple Intelligence feature groups, go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Intelligence & Siri. Apple documents restrictions for Writing Tools and Image Creation, which includes features such as Image Playground, Genmoji, and Image Wand. This is a feature restriction, not the same as disabling all Apple Intelligence controls. See Apple’s Screen Time instructions.

5. Disable the ChatGPT extension, and restrict extensions if needed
On iPhone, open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and find the separate Use ChatGPT control to disable the ChatGPT extension. If you want a stronger Screen Time restriction, use Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Intelligence & Siri and disallow Intelligence Extensions. Apple describes these as including third-party provider extensions such as ChatGPT. When the extension is used, Apple says the request and attachments, plus limited contextual information, are sent to ChatGPT; see Apple’s ChatGPT and Apple Intelligence guidance.

6. Turn off “Hey Google” on Android
If Gemini responds to voice activation and you do not want that shortcut, turn off “Hey Google” in the Gemini or assistant settings. Google documents this control, but the route to it can vary by Android device maker and software version. Search Settings or the Gemini app’s settings for “Hey Google” if the exact path differs.
7. Change the button or gesture shortcut and lock-screen access
A power-button hold or gesture may launch Gemini independently of voice activation. Change that shortcut in your phone’s button or gesture settings if you do not want an assistant to open that way. Also turn off the option often labeled Use Gemini without unlocking or similar to prevent lock-screen access. These controls vary by manufacturer, so use Settings search for “power button,” “gesture,” “assistant,” or “lock screen.”

8. Choose another default assistant—or none
Google documents switching from Gemini to Google Assistant, choosing another default digital assistant app, or setting no default assistant where the phone permits it. Removing the Gemini app alone does not necessarily change which assistant is set as default. Check your device’s default-app or digital-assistant settings after uninstalling or changing apps. 9. Review Gemini Connected Apps
In Gemini settings, review Connected Apps and disconnect services you do not want used for supported personalized features. Depending on eligibility and availability, the list can include Contacts, Google Photos, Google Wallet (US only), Google Workspace, Search services, and YouTube. These settings limit which connected services Gemini can draw on for supported features; they do not turn off all AI use on the phone. 10. Treat personalization and saved activity as different settings
Turning Personal Intelligence off for one Gemini chat limits personalization for that chat; it does not by itself stop the chat from being saved to Gemini Apps Activity. If you want to chat without saving activity to your Google Account, Google points to temporary chat. Review Gemini Apps Activity separately from Connected Apps and personalization. The feature’s availability can vary by eligibility and region; see Google’s Gemini personalization and Connected Apps guidance.

- To stop an assistant opening: check voice activation, button or gesture shortcuts, lock-screen access, and the default digital assistant setting.

- To limit personal context: review Connected Apps and personalization settings; do not treat those as controls for all AI features or account activity retention.
