Stack Fingerprint generates a README-ready tech-stack card from files and dependency manifests in a GitHub repository. You can use a hosted image embed for quick setup, tune which technologies appear, or generate an SVG in your own repository if you do not want the README to depend on a third-party image endpoint at render time.

What Stack Fingerprint detects

In an October 1, 2026 DEV Community article, author MattQ describes Stack Fingerprint as a way to replace manually maintained README badges with a card derived from repository contents. The scanner, as described in that article, makes a recursive request to GitHub’s Git Trees API, then checks file paths and dependency manifests for technology signals.

Examples of manifests it maps include package.json, pyproject.toml, Gemfile, and composer.json. The author says the catalog covers “200+ signals” across categories such as languages, frameworks, UI libraries, databases, testing, build tools, and infrastructure. That figure and the implementation description are the author’s claims; they are not an independent accuracy or performance test.

The article also says the scanner tracks dependency source, allowing it to mark technologies found only in devDependencies as dev-only. That distinction matters when a README card is meant to describe production software rather than the full development toolchain.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose how the card is generated

Approach Setup and control Where the dependency sits
Hosted embed Paste the generated image endpoint into the README; the author says basic use needs no token, signup, or config file. The README relies on the hosted service to serve the image.
Configurable card Use the builder to select visual options and produce Markdown or HTML. MattQ’s article describes 10+ themes, 10 layouts, four sizes, and icon styles; these options may change. Still uses the hosted service if you embed its served image.
Generated repository SVG The author describes a GitHub Action that generates an SVG on GitHub runners and commits it to the repository. The README can display a repository-stored image instead of requesting the hosted image endpoint at render time.

The author also describes a curl workflow and one-click Vercel deployment. The article presents these as alternatives for generating or hosting the card; it does not establish that every part of those workflows has had an independent security review.

Filter signals so the card describes the right thing

Automatic detection is a starting point, not a guarantee that every listed technology is active, important, or relevant to the repository’s purpose. MattQ says user feedback raised concerns about false positives, unused technologies, mixed monorepo signals, long badge lists, and reliance on a third-party image host. Those are reported motivations for product features, not published error-rate measurements.

Pick a signal view

  • all includes all detected signals, with dev-only signals dimmed.
  • prodonly limits the output to production dependencies.
  • top shows languages and frameworks, capped at five, for a shorter card.

Scope a monorepo

If the repository contains multiple applications or packages, use the path setting to scan a subdirectory rather than presenting the entire repository as one stack. This is especially useful when a root-level scan would combine technologies belonging to unrelated projects.

Apply manual corrections

The author describes a .stackfingerprint.json configuration file for ignoring technologies, pinning desired ones, and assigning custom labels. Use these controls when detection is technically present but misleading—for example, when a dependency remains in a manifest but the README should focus on the production app.

Decide whether to use the hosted image or keep an SVG locally

The hosted embed minimizes setup, but a rendered README depends on the service remaining available and serving the image. A committed SVG adds a generation step and repository artifact, while removing that particular runtime dependency on the hosted image endpoint. The author says the project uses caching headers, including stale-while-revalidate, to help with GitHub rate limits; this is an implementation claim, not evidence that rate limits cannot affect it.

Extending the project

MattQ’s article describes a Next.js App Router application, a hand-written SVG builder, simple-icons, Tailwind CSS, Supabase for a showcase, and Vercel hosting. For contributors, the article points to src/data/signals.js for technology detection entries, with a dependency-map entry where appropriate, and src/data/themes.js for theme additions. These paths and stack details are author-provided and may change as the project evolves.
