To make concrete in Minecraft, first craft concrete powder with four sand, four gravel, and one dye. Then place the powder block in the world so it touches a full water block or flowing water; the water converts it into concrete. Crafting alone does not produce finished concrete.
What you need
- Four sand blocks
- Four gravel blocks
- One dye in the color you want
- A full water block or flowing water for the conversion
The dye determines the powder and concrete color. Minecraft describes 16 color possibilities. You can use the in-game recipe book to find the concrete powder recipe and see its required supplies; the recipe quantities are also listed in the steps below. Minecraft’s concrete powder guide gives the recipe and color details, while its crafting guide explains how the recipe book helps locate recipes.

How to make concrete
- Choose a dye. Pick the color you want your concrete to be.
- Gather the ingredients. Collect four sand blocks, four gravel blocks, and one dye.
- Craft concrete powder. Open the crafting interface or recipe book, locate the concrete powder recipe, and craft it using those ingredients. The result is concrete powder, not concrete.
- Place the powder block. Put the powder in the world where it can contact water. Do not throw the powder item into water. Concrete powder is affected by gravity, so it falls if it has no block beneath it; use a supporting block or plan for the fall when placing it.
- Let it touch water. Ensure the placed powder touches a full water block or flowing water. It will convert into concrete.
Minecraft’s guide confirms that the powder must be placed in the world and that a full water block or flowing water triggers conversion: Concrete Powder. A separate Minecraft article also describes concrete as forming from concrete powder exposed to water: Block of the Week: Concrete.

Why your concrete powder may not convert
- You crafted the wrong stage. The recipe creates concrete powder; water exposure is the separate step that makes concrete.
- You dropped the item into water. The powder must be placed as a block in the world before it contacts water.
- You used rain or a water bottle. Neither converts concrete powder. Use a full water block or flowing water instead.
- The powder fell away from the water. Unsupported powder falls under gravity. Support it or position it so it reaches water when placed.
These conversion conditions and failure cases are described in Minecraft’s concrete powder guide.

Making more than one block
For a larger build, craft additional batches of powder and place the blocks so each can contact a full water block or flowing water. Keep gravity in mind as you arrange them. The conversion rule is the same for each placed block; the cited guidance does not establish a particular bulk-conversion machine or setup.
Version and feature note
The cited Minecraft guidance establishes the powder recipe and water behavior, but does not provide a Java-versus-Bedrock comparison or a version-by-version account. A 2026 snapshot announcement describes concrete stairs and slabs as snapshot features; that announcement alone does not establish their general-release status or availability across editions, so this guide covers the established concrete-powder-to-concrete process rather than treating those features as generally available: Minecraft’s 2026 snapshot announcement.
