There is no single “most perfect” character customisation system: some turn-based RPGs focus on who your hero is, others on how their abilities develop, and others let you build an entire party or squad. These six games offer different kinds of control, from the broad ancestry and class choices in Baldur’s Gate 3 to the classless character building of Divinity: Original Sin 2 and the squad progression of Wasteland 3.

If you are looking for a turn-based RPG with character customisation, use the distinctions below to find the right fit for your preferred play style. Option counts describe the choices a game lists; they do not prove that one system is objectively better.

Which turn-based RPG has the best character customisation?

It depends on what you want to customise. For a single protagonist with choices spanning ancestry, class, and appearance, Baldur’s Gate 3 is the strongest all-round fit in this list. For classless build development, consider Divinity: Original Sin 2. For a particularly broad menu of mechanical options, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous stands out. Solasta: Crown of the Magister is built around creating a party, while Wasteland 3 lets you develop a post-apocalyptic Ranger squad. Fell Seal: Arbiter’s Mark rounds out the list for players interested in tactical, class-and-ability customisation.

These are different approaches, not six versions of the same character creator. The available information does not establish a complete, current comparison of visual options across all six, so the recommendations below focus on documented character identity, build choices, party scope, and setting.

Six games, matched to different customisation preferences

1. Baldur’s Gate 3: A broad mix of character identity and class choices

Baldur’s Gate 3 suits players who want to shape both their protagonist’s identity and their mechanical role. Larian’s official overview lists 11 races, 31 subraces, 12 classes, and 46 subclasses. Those counts indicate the range of options described by the studio, not a measure of their quality or how much visual detail the creator offers. Larian also describes evolved turn-based combat and a character creator.

The studio’s support FAQ says custom characters can define race, class, and appearance while remaining connected to the story. Its overview also says the world reacts to how a character develops, making identity choices part of a larger role-playing experience. See Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 overview and custom-character support FAQ.

2. Divinity: Original Sin 2: Build without choosing a traditional class

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a good match if you would rather develop a character through abilities and choices than select a conventional fixed class. Its publisher describes race and origin choices, classless character building, and turn-based combat. Classless does not automatically mean better: players who prefer a clearly defined class identity may find a class-based game a more natural fit. Bandai Namco’s game page outlines the system.

3. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous: A large menu of mechanical options

Choose Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous if you enjoy weighing a lot of build possibilities. The Steam listing for the Enhanced Edition describes 25 classes, 12 races, and more than a thousand spells, feats, and abilities. These are figures from the store listing, not an independent ranking or proof that this game has the “best” customisation. Steam also identifies turn-based combat as an option. Check the Steam listing for Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous Enhanced Edition.

4. Solasta: Crown of the Magister: Create a whole adventuring party

Solasta: Crown of the Magister is the pick for players who like creating a party of adventurers rather than focusing only on one custom protagonist. Tactical Adventures describes party creation and squad-level, turn-based tactical combat. Its character-creation article explains that players choose race and subrace, then class and background; those choices grant features and can shape dialogue. The article dates to 2019, so it supports this description of the system rather than claims about recent changes. See Solasta’s game information and its character-creation overview.

5. Wasteland 3: Develop a post-apocalyptic Ranger squad

If fantasy is not your setting, Wasteland 3 takes character development into a post-apocalyptic tactical RPG. Developer inXile describes it as a squad-based game with turn-based combat; dozens of skills, perks, and quirks let players customise a squad of up to six Rangers. That makes it the clearest fit here for someone who wants to build and coordinate a team. Read inXile’s Wasteland 3 overview.

Fell Seal: Arbiter’s Mark is a tactical role-playing game with turn-based combat and character customisation involving classes and abilities. What to consider before choosing

  • Decide whether you want one hero or a team. Baldur’s Gate 3 foregrounds a custom protagonist; Solasta promotes creating a party; Wasteland 3 describes customising a Ranger squad.
  • Pick your preferred kind of build freedom. Divinity: Original Sin 2 is explicitly classless, while Baldur’s Gate 3 and Solasta present class choices and Pathfinder highlights a broad menu of mechanical options.
  • Consider whether identity should affect the story. Larian says a custom character remains embedded in Baldur’s Gate 3’s story, and Tactical Adventures says backgrounds and character flags can affect dialogue in Solasta.
  • Choose a setting and tactical feel. The cited descriptions position Solasta around party-based tactical combat and Wasteland 3 around a post-apocalyptic squad. Tone may matter as much as the number of build options.
  • Check the exact platform and edition. Store pages and availability can differ by platform, region, and edition; confirm the listing that applies to your purchase.
