An old Android phone can serve as a bedside clock and glanceable dashboard while it charges, but what it can display depends on its Android version, the phone maker’s software, and the app or connected devices you use. Google’s built-in screen saver is the simplest place to start; a standby app can add more display options.
The available information does not identify which three gadgets the original setup replaced, or the phone and apps it used. The guide below sticks to functions documented by Google and app listings rather than guessing at those details.
What can an old Android phone show at your bedside?
Depending on the phone and software, a docked or charging handset can show a clock alongside weather, calendar entries, photos, battery or charging status, and music controls. These are possible features, not a promise that every phone supports every option.
Google says its screen saver feature can display photos, colorful backgrounds, a clock, and other content while a phone is charging or docked. Available choices and setup steps vary by device; some instructions apply only to Android 14 and later. See Google’s screen saver instructions.

Third-party apps advertise additional clock faces and dashboard widgets. Their listings describe features, but do not establish how well they work on a particular handset. Check the app’s current Android requirements and permissions, privacy disclosures, ads or in-app purchases before installing.

Start with the built-in screen saver if it provides the clock and content you want. Choose an app when you need a particular widget or display behavior, such as a specific clock style or automatic launch. There is no universally best choice established here: compatibility, customization, dimming, permissions, and cost vary.

Set up the phone for easy viewing
- Check the phone’s software. Find its Android version in Settings and install any remaining system and app updates available for that model. The version helps determine whether screen saver and smart-home features are available.
- Set up the display. Look for the screen saver option in Settings; the exact menu path can differ by manufacturer. If you need more choices, review a compatible clock app’s current listing and configure only the widgets you intend to use.
- Position the phone securely. Use a stable, adjustable bedside phone stand at an angle you can read from bed. Check that the stand fits the phone with its case, allows your preferred orientation, leaves the charging port accessible, and does not strain the cable. An angled stand is one example of a bedside arrangement, not a tested recommendation for every model; see Android Central’s Pixel 10 Pro bedside setup.
- Make the display comfortable at night. Reduce brightness or use an app’s dim or night mode if available. Google also recommends lowering screen brightness to help conserve battery. Android battery guidance.
Use it to control smart-home devices only if it qualifies
A bedside screen can also provide access to compatible smart-home controls, but the phone’s Android version and the devices’ Google Home setup matter. Google specifies Android 11 or higher for Home controls and Android 14 or higher for the home panel. Confirm that each device is compatible and already set up in Google Home, then check Google’s Android phone and tablet control requirements.

- Use the adapter supplied with the phone when possible, and follow the device maker’s instructions for model-specific charging advice. Connector and power requirements vary.
- Keep the phone cool and avoid unnecessary screen brightness while it is charging, as Google’s battery guidance advises.
- Keep the phone and charging equipment ventilated; do not cover them or charge on bedding or other soft surfaces. Those specific placement precautions appear in Google’s Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL safety manual; consult the actual manufacturer’s guidance for a different phone.
- Inspect an older handset for damage before relying on it for repeated charging, and stop using damaged equipment.
What “replaced three gadgets” can—and cannot—mean
A phone dashboard may combine functions such as a clock, weather display, photo frame, calendar glance, media controls, charging information, or eligible smart-home controls. The available sources do not establish which three physical devices the original setup replaced.

Do not assume a bedside display is a dependable alarm clock, smart speaker, or dedicated weather station simply because it shows a clock, media controls, or weather. Those roles depend on capabilities such as alarm reliability, audio behavior, and the weather data source; confirm them in your actual setup before counting a device as replaced.
