Turing Complete 2.0 is a near-total rewrite of the computer-building game. The developer says Godot was replaced by a custom engine, but the change also includes reimplemented levels and components, a new compiler, a custom assembly framework and a redesigned simulation architecture. The cost for existing players is significant: saves from the old version do not work in the new one.
What changed in Turing Complete 2.0?
The headline engine change describes only part of the work. According to the developer’s patch notes, Turing Complete 2.0 replaces the Godot-based technology with the game’s own engine and rebuilds major parts of the game around it.

That makes 2.0 a platform rewrite rather than a narrow renderer or engine migration. The developer says the compiler work alone took more than a year, illustrating how much of the underlying system changed.
Why the developer says the scope expanded
In a February 23, 2025 status update, the developer said the project had grown beyond a puzzle focused on how a CPU operates. The stated goal is a “computer learning / creation / exploration platform.” That broader ambition explains the investment in a compiler, custom tooling and a new engine.

The developer also cites three practical reasons for the rewrite:
- Reduce the need for repeated save-breaking updates as new systems are added.
- Use a compiler to support custom levels and faster simulation.
- Expand the campaign to cover modern processor ideas rather than stopping at basic CPU construction.
The post describes intended direction, not a delivery schedule or an independent audit of the development effort. Future features should therefore be treated as plans rather than guaranteed release dates.
New technical and learning features
Variable-width components
Patch notes say almost all components can operate at widths from 2 to 64 bits. This lets a circuit’s data width match the problem more closely instead of forcing every exercise into one fixed size.

Assembler and architecture changes
The rewrite adds a new assembler system and a revised architecture. Together with the compiler, these tools are intended to make lower-level programming and user-created content more practical.
RAM interaction modes
RAM gains additional ways to inspect and edit data, including a hex-editor mode and a punch-card mode. Those views offer different teaching and debugging models: hexadecimal editing exposes raw values, while punch-card presentation evokes an older physical encoding workflow.
Labels, hints and solutions
Component pin labels are intended to make larger circuits easier to read. The update also adds hints and solutions, giving players more structured help when a design stalls.

Exhaustive testing
Most levels at 16 bits or less can use an exhaustive-testing capability. Within that stated limit, the game can check a broader set of input combinations than a player might reasonably test by hand. The notes do not claim that this facility applies to every level or every component configuration.

How much faster is the new simulation?
The developer states that “Simulation speed is 100x faster.” This is a developer claim from the Turing Complete 2 patch notes, not an independently verified benchmark. The announcement does not provide hardware, workload, timing method or old-versus-new test conditions, so the figure should not be read as a universal measured gain for every circuit.
What the rewrite is meant to enable
The developer links the new foundation to larger circuits, user-created campaigns and campaign material intended to feel more realistic. The stated longer-term subject matter includes superscalar execution, pipelining and speculative execution—techniques associated with modern processor design.

Those examples show why an engine replacement alone would not have been enough. Supporting a wider range of circuit sizes, custom content and more advanced CPU concepts requires changes to simulation, compilation, level data and the teaching interface at the same time.

Saves from the old version are incompatible with Turing Complete 2.0. If you have an unfinished campaign or custom work in the previous release, moving to 2.0 means you cannot simply open that save in the rewritten version.

The announcement says players can switch to Steam’s old_version channel to remain on the previous version. It does not state how long that channel will remain available, so keeping a separate backup of important old-version saves is prudent. Do not assume that the channel represents a permanent support commitment.

Is Turing Complete 2.0 a new game?
It is still the same game and educational concept, but the scope of the rewrite makes it functionally closer to a new technical foundation than a routine update. Reimplemented content, a new engine, a compiler, a custom assembly framework and incompatible saves all point to a major version transition.
For newcomers, the choice is straightforward: the rewritten version is the one aligned with the developer’s broader platform vision. For returning players, the choice is between preserving progress on the old build and starting with the new architecture and tools.
