TSMC generated approximately NT$1.49 trillion (US$46.71 billion) in revenue from July through September 2026, compared with NT$989.92 billion in the same quarter a year earlier. Reuters described the increase as 50%; the original headline’s 51% reflects a different rounding of the approximate figures. Reuters attributed the growth to surging demand for AI applications, but did not quantify how much of the increase came from AI.
What TSMC reported for Q3 2026
The quarter covered July, August and September. Reuters calculated the approximately NT$1.49 trillion total from TSMC’s monthly revenue announcements; it was not a quarterly figure quoted in the company’s brief monthly sales statement. The prior-year comparison was NT$989.92 billion for Q3 2025. Reuters’ report, carried by Euronext, stated the year-over-year rise as 50%.
The difference between 50% and 51% is a rounding issue around an approximate total, not evidence of two different reported quarters. The clearest way to read the result is alongside both revenue totals and the comparison period.
How it compared with TSMC’s outlook
In July, TSMC forecast Q3 revenue of US$44.6 billion to US$45.8 billion. The reported US$46.71 billion was above that range. The forecast appeared in the company’s Q2 release, which also projected a 65%–67% gross margin and a 56%–58% operating margin for Q3; those were outlook figures, not reported Q3 results. The October 8 revenue update reported monthly sales and did not provide new forward guidance. Reuters said TSMC was scheduled to publish its full Q3 earnings the following week. The revenue announcement therefore established that sales exceeded the July range, but did not by itself establish Q3 profit or margins.
What AI demand explains—and what it does not
Reuters linked the strong revenue growth to surging demand for AI applications. That supports describing AI as a reported driver of the result, but not assigning a precise share of quarterly revenue growth to AI: the cited reporting provides no such breakdown.
TSMC’s preceding-quarter release offers context, not a Q3 product-mix disclosure. CFO Wendell Huang said on July 16, 2026, “Our business in the second quarter was supported by strong demand for our leading-edge process technologies.” The same release defined advanced technologies as 7-nanometer and more advanced and said they accounted for 77% of Q2 wafer revenue. Those statements describe Q2, not the July–September quarter.
Keep the year-over-year and sequential comparisons separate
TSMC’s Q2 2026 revenue was NT$1,270.38 billion, up 36.0% year over year and 12.0% from Q1. That sequential increase compares Q2 with the immediately preceding quarter; it is not the basis for Q3’s reported year-over-year growth. The Q3 comparison instead measures July–September 2026 against July–September 2025.

Q2’s profitability figures also belong only to that quarter: gross margin was 67.7%, operating margin 60.3% and net profit margin 55.6%. They should not be read as Q3 margins. TSMC’s Q2 results provide those reported figures.

A revenue beat is not a guarantee of continued growth. In its Q2 release, TSMC said actual outcomes can differ materially from forward-looking statements and identified factors that may affect results, including:
- Semiconductor industry cyclicality and market conditions.
- Demand for, and supply of, its manufacturing capacity.
- Intense competition and significant changes in customer orders.
- Maintaining technology leadership and managing capacity.
- Natural disasters or other disruptions to production.
- Currency fluctuations.
These are company-disclosed risk factors, not predictions that any particular event will occur.

The October 8 sales update did not supply a Q3 profit, margin breakdown, new outlook or an AI-specific revenue split. Those questions require the full quarterly earnings information; the monthly revenue total alone cannot answer them.
