Tripo has integrated OpenAI’s GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst into Tripo Studio, combining image generation, precise editing, multi-view preparation and image-to-3D conversion in one browser workspace. Creators can develop or repair a visual reference, generate the views needed for reconstruction, and send the result directly to Tripo’s Image to 3D Model workflow.
What the integration adds to Tripo Studio
Previously, a creator might generate a concept in one application, clean it up in another, create additional views separately and then upload the files to a 3D-generation service. Tripo’s integration puts those stages together. Sunburst-powered tools are available inside Tripo Studio’s image workflow, and the finished reference can be handed to Tripo’s image-to-3D conversion without leaving the workspace.
The feature is designed for both users who already have a source image and users starting from text. An uploaded image, a text prompt, or a combination of text and image can be used as the input.

How the Tripo image-to-3D workflow works
Starting with an existing image
- Open Tripo Studio’s image-generation feature and upload the source image, enter a prompt, or provide both.
- Choose the template that matches the intended operation, such as Character Extraction, T Pose or 3D Print-Ready.
- Generate the reference with Sunburst, then use targeted edits to correct details, remove distractions or complete missing areas.
- Create additional views when the model needs more than one angle for reconstruction.
- Send the prepared image or multi-view set to Tripo’s Image to 3D Model workflow.
- After conversion, use Tripo’s available asset operations—segmentation, retopology, texturing, rigging or animation—as appropriate for the project.
Starting from text alone
Tripo’s Text to 3D Model workflow can first generate a reference image when no source picture is available. That image can be iterated with the same Sunburst-powered editing tools before it is converted into a 3D asset. This makes the reference-image stage part of the modeling process instead of a separate search for suitable artwork.

What GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst contributes
OpenAI describes Images 2.5 as providing sharper detail, more natural lighting, richer textures, stronger preservation of reference subjects, more reliable instruction following across multiple edits and more precise editing. OpenAI reports that image-generation latency can be up to 50% lower than with Images 2.0; that figure is vendor-reported and is not a Tripo benchmark.

OpenAI also reports that more than 3 billion images are created each week across ChatGPT Images and GPT-Image models in the API. This is likewise an OpenAI-reported figure, not an independent usage measurement.
Sunburst versus Flare in Tripo
Tripo’s September 2026 developer changelog exposes the two models as chat_image_2.5_flare and chat_image_2.5_sunburst on text-to-image and image-to-image endpoints. The practical distinction is speed versus fidelity: Flare is documented as noticeably faster at the same cost, while Sunburst is documented as preserving untouched portions of an edited image more closely.

For a reconstruction reference, Sunburst is the more defensible choice when identity, proportions or existing details must remain stable through several edits. Flare is the time-saving option when rapid exploration is the priority and a little more variation is acceptable.

max. - Supported background values are
auto,opaqueandtransparent. - A transparent background requires
output_format=png. - If quality is omitted in Tripo’s API, it is treated as
low. - Higher quality tiers consume additional credits.
That default differs from OpenAI’s behavior: Tripo’s changelog says its API treats an omitted quality value as low, while OpenAI does not support auto as the default in the same way. Set the quality explicitly when consistency matters across a batch.
Practical settings checklist
- Use
chat_image_2.5_sunburstwhen preserving an existing subject through edits is critical. - Use
chat_image_2.5_flarewhen faster iterations are worth the trade-off. - Set
quality=maxonly when the additional credit cost is justified by the reference’s role in reconstruction. - Choose
background=transparentfor cutouts or isolated assets, and pair it withoutput_format=png. - Never rely on an omitted quality field if a workflow requires a known quality tier.
What happens after conversion to 3D
The integrated workflow does not end at mesh generation. Tripo can segment the resulting asset, retopologize it, apply textures, prepare it for rigging and support animation-oriented processing. Which operations are useful depends on whether the output is intended for a game, animation, visualization, 3D printing or another pipeline. The image-preparation templates are valuable because they address these downstream requirements before the reconstruction step, when correcting a reference is usually easier than repairing an unsuitable model.
