Trent Limited and Avenue Supermarts Limited are retailers built for different shopping missions. Trent is primarily a fashion-and-lifestyle portfolio whose largest formats are Westside and Zudio. Avenue Supermarts operates DMart, a value-focused chain for recurring household shopping across food, non-food FMCG, general merchandise and apparel.
That distinction explains most of the differences in merchandise, branding, pricing, sourcing, store networks and reported scale. Trent’s 1,286-store portfolio is spread across several lifestyle concepts, while Avenue Supermarts reported 500 DMart stores and about 20.58 million square feet of retail business area at the end of FY2025-26. Their company-level revenues and profits therefore cannot be read as a like-for-like comparison of Westside, Zudio and DMart stores.

Trent and Avenue Supermarts at a glance
The simplest way to separate the businesses is to ask what a typical customer is trying to accomplish. A Trent visit is usually about fashion, personal style, beauty, footwear or selected home products. A DMart visit is designed around filling an everyday basket: groceries, household and personal-care products, general merchandise and some apparel.

All financial and footprint figures in the table refer to the fiscal year ended 2026-03-31. The store counts, areas, merchandise categories and company structures are different, so the table describes scale and design rather than proving which format has better store productivity, margins or investment value.
#1 Best Overall
What each company sells
Trent: a portfolio of fashion and lifestyle concepts
Trent’s retail identity is built around branded concepts rather than one universal store proposition. Its best-known formats are Westside and Zudio, with other lifestyle concepts contributing to the group total. The result is a portfolio in which store size, merchandise mix, customer occasion and price architecture can vary substantially from one format to another.
Westside is the more aspirational of the two prominent formats. Trent describes it as an on-trend fashion business with an aspirational brand experience and access through stores and digital channels. The assortment is intended to feel curated and coherent as a fashion brand, not simply assembled as a supermarket-style collection of products.
Zudio addresses a different part of the fashion market. It focuses entirely on exclusive branded offerings curated in-house and aligned with current fashion trends at value prices. In practical terms, that means the customer is choosing among Zudio’s own fashion proposition rather than browsing a supermarket’s mixed national-brand assortment.

Because the group reports at company level, its revenue and profit include these businesses rather than only Westside or only Zudio.
Avenue Supermarts: DMart for recurring household shopping
Avenue Supermarts’ core retail business is DMart. Its assortment spans foods, non-food fast-moving consumer goods and general merchandise and apparel. A single trip can therefore combine staples such as food and household supplies with personal-care products, small general merchandise items and clothing.
The customer mission is frequency and breadth. DMart is designed for planned or routine shopping in which the value of the total basket matters. Apparel is present, but it sits alongside grocery and FMCG categories instead of defining the store’s identity.
This difference in shopping mission affects how shoppers judge the stores. A Westside or Zudio customer may evaluate trend relevance, fit, styling and the feel of the collection. A DMart customer is more likely to evaluate whether the store covers the needed categories and whether the combined basket offers dependable value.
How the brand and product architecture differs
Trent controls distinct fashion identities
Trent’s formats are separate propositions with their own roles. Westside’s identity depends on a recognizable fashion point of view and a more elevated environment. Zudio is deliberately narrower in brand architecture: exclusive in-house products, fast-moving trend curation and value pricing.
Trent says Westside exercises active ownership across design, branding, sourcing, logistics, pricing, display, promotion and selling. That end-to-end control allows the format to coordinate the product itself with how it is presented in a store or digital channel. It also means that a Westside or Zudio item is part of a planned private or exclusive brand system rather than simply a shelf allocation purchased from many unrelated suppliers.
The company reported that more than 80% of its merchandise was near-shored from within India in FY2025-26. Near-shoring does not mean every item is made in one location or that imported products are absent; it describes the reported sourcing mix for the period. The figure is relevant because fashion businesses need control over design-to-delivery timing, replenishment and trend changes.
DMart combines categories under one value proposition
DMart’s architecture is less about separate fashion labels and more about assembling a broad basket at a competitive total cost. Avenue Supermarts attributes its offer to product assortment, local-market knowledge and supply-chain efficiencies. The same store can therefore serve different missions without requiring a separate branded concept for each category.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe company’s stated strategy is to offer good-quality products at great value under the Everyday Low Cost/Everyday Low Price principle. EDLC/EDLP signals a structural approach to price: control the cost base and maintain low prices as an everyday proposition instead of relying mainly on short promotional events.
That does not make every DMart item cheaper than every competing item in every location. It means the business is organized around cost discipline and value across the shopping basket. Local assortment decisions can still vary by market, season and store.
Price propositions: value fashion versus everyday-low-price retail
Westside’s aspirational value
Westside competes through the combination of fashion relevance and experience. Trent’s description emphasizes on-trend fashion, an aspirational brand experience and convenient access across store and digital channels. The value proposition is therefore not reducible to the lowest ticket price: design, presentation, curation and the convenience of the channel are part of what the customer receives.
Rank #3
Zudio’s in-house fashion at value prices
Zudio moves the emphasis toward affordable fashion while retaining an exclusive brand proposition. Its merchandise is curated in-house and sold under the Zudio offering, allowing the format to align trends, product decisions and prices without presenting itself as a general supermarket.
Customers comparing Zudio with DMart should remember that both can sell apparel at value-oriented prices, but the job of the store is different. Zudio is a fashion-led destination; DMart’s apparel is one category within a broad everyday basket.
DMart’s EDLC/EDLP model
DMart’s price promise is tied to operating economics. Avenue Supermarts links competitive pricing to assortment choices, knowledge of local markets and supply-chain efficiencies, then frames the customer offer through EDLC/EDLP. The model is intended to make value visible in ordinary shopping rather than only during a sale period.
Because the two companies sell different category mixes, a direct comparison of an average selling price or discount percentage would be misleading. Fashion products, groceries, FMCG and general merchandise have different purchase cycles, margins, ticket sizes and replenishment patterns.
How the operating models work
Trent’s design-to-selling chain
Trent describes active ownership across the chain from design and branding through sourcing, logistics, pricing, display, promotion and selling. This is a coordinated model: a product decision is connected to the brand identity, the way it is displayed, the price at which it is offered and the channel through which it reaches the customer.
Such control is particularly useful in fashion, where a late trend shift can reduce the usefulness of inventory and where visual presentation influences conversion. Near-shoring more than 80% of merchandise within India, as reported for FY2025-26, can support shorter or more responsive supply routes, although the published figure by itself does not establish a specific lead time or margin outcome.
DMart’s cost-and-network discipline
Avenue Supermarts emphasizes assortment, local-market knowledge and supply-chain efficiencies. Its FY2025-26 annual report states that it operated 84 distribution centres and 12 packing centres at 2026-03-31. Those facilities support a large, repeat-purchase retail network in which dependable movement of food, FMCG and general merchandise is central to the customer promise.
The distribution infrastructure should not be treated as an equivalent of Trent’s store count or near-shoring figure. They measure different parts of different businesses: one describes a reported merchandise-sourcing mix, while the other describes logistics facilities serving DMart’s network.
Store networks and physical scale
Trent’s multi-format footprint
At 2026-03-31, Trent reported 1,286 stores across 321 cities. The breakdown was 300 Westside stores, 963 Zudio stores and 23 stores across other lifestyle concepts.

The total is useful for understanding the breadth of Trent’s portfolio, but it should not be read as 1,286 interchangeable locations. A Zudio store and a Westside store can differ in area, assortment, layout and customer mission. The 23 stores in other concepts add another layer of variation.
DMart’s store and area reporting
Avenue Supermarts reported 500 DMart stores and approximately 20.58 million square feet of retail business area at the same fiscal year-end. Reporting both store count and retail area gives a clearer sense of the physical platform than store count alone.
Comparing 1,286 Trent stores with 500 DMart stores without considering area and format would produce a false impression. Trent’s count aggregates multiple fashion formats, many of which can be smaller and more numerous. DMart’s reported area reflects large stores designed for broad baskets. Neither figure, by itself, establishes superior productivity.
Geographic reach
Trent’s disclosed footprint covers 321 cities. Avenue Supermarts’ annual report lists operations across 17 states and territories and reports the 500-store network. These are different geographic measures: city count and state-or-territory coverage do not map one-to-one, so they should be used as descriptive indicators rather than a ranking of reach.
FY2025-26 financial scale—and the limits of the comparison
| Measure | Trent Limited | Avenue Supermarts Limited |
|---|---|---|
| Reporting basis | Standalone company figures for FY2025-26 | Standalone company figures for FY2025-26 |
| Revenue from operations | ₹19,701.41 crore | ₹66,968.03 crore |
| Profit after tax | ₹1,967.82 crore | ₹3,223.93 crore |
| Fiscal year-end | 2026-03-31 | 2026-03-31 |
Avenue Supermarts reported the larger standalone revenue and profit for FY2025-26. That is a company-scale observation, not proof that a DMart store earns more than a Westside or Zudio store. Trent’s figures combine a portfolio of fashion and lifestyle businesses, while Avenue Supermarts’ core disclosure is centered on DMart’s everyday-value retail model.
Best Value
The audited standalone Avenue Supermarts results filing was approved on 2026-05-02. These numbers describe the completed fiscal period and should not be treated as a current run rate for October 2026; later quarterly updates may have changed store counts or revenue trends.
No directly comparable format-level margin, unit economics or per-store productivity measure is established by these disclosures. Store area, merchandise mix, accounting boundaries and customer missions all affect those calculations.
What the difference means for a shopper
Choose a Trent format when the mission is fashion-led
- For an edited, trend-oriented fashion experience, Westside is the relevant Trent format.
- For value-focused, exclusive in-house fashion, Zudio is the closer fit.
- For beauty, footwear, home or other lifestyle needs, the appropriate Trent concept depends on the specific assortment available in that location.
- Digital and store access are part of Westside’s stated customer proposition, so channel convenience matters alongside the merchandise.
Choose DMart when the mission is a broad household basket
- DMart is designed for food and grocery-related shopping, non-food FMCG and general merchandise.
- Apparel can be included in the trip, but it is one category in a wider everyday assortment.
- The EDLC/EDLP approach makes the total basket and routine value the central comparison, rather than a single fashion collection or seasonal trend.
When the missions overlap
The overlap is greatest in basic apparel and selected general merchandise. Even there, the surrounding experience differs. A Zudio visit starts with fashion curation and exclusive branding; a DMart visit starts with a broad basket and value across categories. Two items can have similar prices while belonging to fundamentally different retail systems.

Common comparison mistakes
Treating all Trent stores as Westside
Trent’s 1,286-store total includes 300 Westside stores, 963 Zudio stores and 23 stores in other lifestyle concepts. Using the group total as if it represented one format obscures the differences between Westside and Zudio.
Comparing store counts without store area
Store count alone does not reveal capacity, assortment depth or sales potential. DMart reports approximately 20.58 million square feet of retail business area, while Trent’s headline count spans formats with different sizes and missions. A per-store conclusion requires comparable area and format-level data that these disclosures do not provide.
Calling DMart a fashion competitor
DMart sells apparel, but its defining proposition is broad everyday-value retail. Describing it as a fashion chain misses the role of food, FMCG and general merchandise in the basket.
Calling Zudio a supermarket discount aisle
Zudio’s value positioning does not make it a grocery-style discount department. Trent describes Zudio as exclusive branded fashion curated in-house. Its operating logic is fashion-led even when prices are accessible.
Using company profits to rank formats
Standalone company results are not format-level results. Trent’s profit includes its portfolio; Avenue Supermarts’ profit reflects its company structure and DMart operations. The figures cannot establish relative margins or investment attractiveness for an individual store concept.
Bottom line: different jobs, not interchangeable chains
Trent and Avenue Supermarts occupy different parts of Indian retail. Trent builds fashion and lifestyle brands, with Westside emphasizing on-trend, aspirational shopping and Zudio offering exclusive in-house fashion at value prices. Avenue Supermarts builds DMart around a broad everyday basket and an EDLC/EDLP value discipline.
Trent’s larger reported store count reflects a multi-format lifestyle portfolio; DMart’s 500 stores and 20.58 million square feet reflect a concentrated large-store network. Avenue Supermarts had higher standalone FY2025-26 revenue and profit, but those company totals are not a like-for-like test of store economics. The useful comparison is the retail mission: fashion and lifestyle curation on one side, recurring household value shopping on the other.
