U.S. Treasury bonds generally have lower credit risk and better market liquidity than corporate bonds, but neither is automatically risk-free to sell before maturity. Corporate bonds add the possibility that an issuer may not pay as promised, and their trading costs can vary widely by issue and trade size. For either type, the price you can actually get depends on the specific bond, the market at the time, and how you place the trade.

What is the difference between Treasury and corporate bonds?

A bond is a debt security: the issuer borrows money and promises payments under the bond’s terms. A U.S. Treasury bond is issued by the U.S. government. A corporate bond is issued by a company. The issuer matters because it determines whose ability and willingness to pay you rely on.

Treasury bonds and corporate bonds can both pay interest and return principal at maturity. Their prices can also change before maturity. The most important distinction is that direct U.S. Treasury interest and principal payments are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, while a corporate bond depends on the named company’s finances and willingness to meet its obligations. TreasuryDirect describes the government’s Treasury payment backing in its FAQs about Treasury marketable securities.

That backing addresses credit risk—the risk that promised payments will not be made. It does not promise that you can sell a Treasury at your purchase price. If you sell before maturity, the market price may be above or below what you paid. The same is true for a corporate bond, which also carries issuer credit risk.

Are Treasury bonds more liquid than corporate bonds?

Generally, yes: U.S. Treasury securities tend to be highly liquid, while corporate bond liquidity varies more from one issue to another. Liquidity means being able to buy or sell when you want at a fair price. It is not simply the presence of a quoted price or the ability to submit an order.

FINRA’s investor guidance, “Understanding Disclosure Documents,” published August 27, 2026, says: “U.S. Treasury securities tend to have high liquidity, while bond liquidity varies from one bond to another.” This is a category-level tendency, not a guarantee about every Treasury or every corporate bond. Market stress can also shift demand toward the most liquid securities and make it harder to trade less-liquid investments.

What affects a bond’s liquidity?

  • Trading activity: A bond that trades more often may be easier to buy or sell than one with little activity.
  • Bid-ask spread: The bid is the price a buyer or dealer offers; the ask is the price at which a seller is willing to sell. A wider gap can mean a larger implicit cost to trade.
  • Available counterparties: The number of participants willing to trade, and the prices at which they will do so, matters. FINRA cautions that “A narrow spread can indicate good liquidity but doesn’t provide a complete picture on its own.”
  • Issue characteristics: In corporate bonds, issue size, credit quality, how recently the bond was issued, proximity to maturity, and complexity can all matter. The SEC’s Fixed Income Market Structure Advisory Committee survey summarizes studies finding lower estimated trading costs for larger, higher-quality, newer, simpler corporate issues and those closer to maturity.
  • Market conditions: Liquidity can change. A bond that was straightforward to trade in ordinary conditions may be harder to sell promptly when the market is under stress.

“Treasury liquidity” also is not a single uniform condition. The Treasury market includes securities that differ in maturity and trading activity; the SEC survey’s historical spread estimate discussed below concerns a specific interdealer market segment, not every Treasury security or a retail investor’s quote.

What risks should you compare?

Credit risk

Direct U.S. Treasury securities have very low U.S. government credit risk because TreasuryDirect says their interest and principal payments are backed by the full faith and credit of the government. This is not the same as saying their prices cannot fall. Corporate bond investors take issuer credit risk: if a company’s ability or willingness to pay weakens, the bond may lose value, and the issuer may fail to make promised payments.

A corporate bond’s yield above a comparable Treasury yield is often discussed as compensation for credit risk, but it should not be attributed solely to default risk. The SEC survey describes research finding that illiquidity helps explain variation in corporate bond yield spreads as well. A yield spread can therefore reflect more than one source of risk or cost.

Interest-rate and market-price risk

Both bond types can lose market value when prevailing yields rise. A bond’s coupon and remaining maturity affect how its price responds to changing yields; longer duration generally means greater price sensitivity. Two bonds with roughly similar maturity dates do not necessarily have identical sensitivity because their coupons and other terms can differ.

TreasuryDirect’s “Understanding Pricing and Interest Rates” explains the relationship for Treasury bonds and notes: a price below par corresponds to a yield to maturity above the coupon rate, while a price above par corresponds to a yield below the coupon rate. In practical terms, if market yields rise after you buy a fixed-rate bond, a buyer may require a lower price to accept its existing payments. If yields fall, the bond’s price may rise. Corporate prices can respond to interest-rate changes and to changes in the market’s view of the issuer’s credit quality.

Yield to maturity is a useful way to compare a bond’s price and scheduled cash flows under its assumptions, but it is not a promise of the return you will realize if you sell early. An early sale happens at the price available then, and trading costs can further affect the result.

Liquidity risk and reinvestment considerations

Liquidity risk is the possibility that you cannot sell quickly at a fair price when you want to. It is separate from the risk that the issuer will not pay, and from the risk that market yields will move. A buyer who expects to hold to maturity may care less about day-to-day tradability than someone who may need to sell, but the bond’s payment and price risks still need to be understood. No specific future yield or reinvestment rate is guaranteed, so compare the bond’s actual cash-flow terms and your planned holding period rather than relying on a category label.

What do trading costs look like?

A bond’s cost to trade is not necessarily a separately itemized brokerage commission. The price offered by a dealer and the bid-ask spread can affect what you receive when selling or what you pay when buying. A low-liquidity bond may take longer to trade or require accepting a less favorable price. Any applicable brokerage charge and other transaction costs should be considered alongside the quoted price.

0.40% Estimated average corporate bond round-trip trading cost for trades from $1 million to $10 million For 2014–2016, as summarized in the SEC survey’s discussion of Bessembinder et al. (2018). Historical estimate, not a current quote.

The Treasury figure is an interdealer spread for a platform and year; the corporate figures are estimated customer round-trip costs over a multiyear period. Comparing them as if they were directly comparable retail charges would be misleading. The SEC survey also describes corporate trading costs as varying with trade size, issue size, credit quality, age, maturity, and bond complexity. Your own cost depends on the particular security, amount, quote, execution, brokerage pricing, and market conditions.

How to compare two specific bonds

Compare the actual securities and the trade you intend to make, rather than relying only on “Treasury” or “corporate.” A practical checklist is:

  1. Identify the issuer and payment exposure. For a direct Treasury, consider the U.S. government backing. For a corporate bond, assess the named issuer’s credit quality and ability to pay.
  2. Compare maturity, coupon, and price. Look at remaining term, coupon, current price, and yield to maturity. A premium or discount to par affects the relationship between coupon and yield.
  3. Consider rate sensitivity. Compare duration or another suitable measure of interest-rate sensitivity when available. Similar maturity alone does not establish equal sensitivity.
  4. Check issue-level liquidity. Review trading activity, bid-ask spread, available quotes or participants, and issue size. For Treasury securities, distinguish more actively traded on-the-run issues from off-the-run issues where relevant.
  5. Review corporate bond features. Credit quality, issue age, distance to maturity, and embedded options or other complexity can affect pricing and trading costs.
  6. Specify your trade. A buy and a sale may face different quotes. Consider the amount, whether you may need to sell soon, accrued interest where applicable, and how you will hold or access the bond.
  7. Estimate total execution cost from an actual quote. Include the bid-ask difference, any applicable brokerage charge, and other transaction costs. Historical averages are context, not a substitute for a quote on your intended order.

FINRA notes that a limit order can help prevent accepting an unwanted price in an illiquid market. It does not create a buyer or guarantee execution: if no counterparty accepts the limit, the order may remain unfilled. A limit can therefore trade price control for the possibility of waiting or not trading.

How can you buy or sell Treasury bonds?

TreasuryDirect says marketable Treasury securities are available through auctions and the secondary market. TreasuryDirect accepts noncompetitive bids only; banks, brokers, and dealers can handle competitive and noncompetitive bids. The route you choose affects the ordering process and may affect access, order handling, or charges, so check the current terms of the institution you use.

Buying through TreasuryDirect

TreasuryDirect states a $100 minimum purchase for marketable securities bought there. New marketable securities purchased through TreasuryDirect generally must be held for 45 calendar days before they can be transferred or sold. The stated exception is securities purchased with reinvestment proceeds. That restriction applies to the TreasuryDirect holding route described by the agency; do not assume it applies to a bond held through another channel.

For notes, bonds, Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS), and floating-rate notes, accrued interest can be part of the purchase price when applicable. TreasuryDirect says the accrued interest is returned with the first regular interest payment. Treasury bills do not pay periodic interest.

Using a bank, broker, or dealer

A bank, broker, or dealer can handle competitive or noncompetitive auction bids and may provide access to secondary-market Treasury trading. Before placing an order, check that provider’s current access, charges, and order handling. A stated quote is more useful for estimating a particular trade than a historical market-wide average; confirm whether it is a purchase or sale price and what costs are included.

Treasury issuance scale should not be confused with secondary-market liquidity. The Treasury Department reported 444 public auctions and about $29.7 trillion in Treasury marketable securities issued in 2025. Those figures describe auction activity and issuance, not the liquidity of a particular bond or a transaction-cost estimate.

Which bond type may fit your situation?

The better choice depends on the exposure and trading flexibility you need. A direct Treasury may be more appropriate to examine when minimizing U.S. government credit risk and seeking generally stronger liquidity are priorities. A corporate bond may be considered when its issuer risk, liquidity, terms, and yield are acceptable to you. A higher corporate yield is not free extra return: it may compensate for credit exposure, illiquidity, or other bond characteristics.

If you might need to sell before maturity, give greater attention to the actual bid and the issue’s trading activity, not just its stated maturity or yield. If you intend to hold to maturity, payment risk, cash-flow timing, and purchase price remain relevant; holding does not erase corporate credit risk or guarantee a particular outcome if circumstances change.
