TravelMate is an idea for helping travelers find compatible companions and plan trips together—not a service for booking hotels or train tickets. In a retrospective published August 30, 2026, developer ALISAM SRIVARDHAN explains how a stalled student project, LexAssist, shaped the way they approached building it. The account and progress described below are the author’s own; the article does not independently verify the product’s operation or release status.
What TravelMate is meant to solve
Planning a group trip can mean juggling a chat thread, a spreadsheet for expenses, and a document for the itinerary. But in SRIVARDHAN’s account, those coordination tools are not the hardest part. The first challenge is finding people whose destination, dates, budget, and preferred kind of travel align.
That distinction defines TravelMate’s intended scope. It is a platform for discovering compatible travelers, forming a group, and coordinating the trip together. The author frames it as neither a booking engine nor a generic social app: the central idea is compatibility-based group formation, rather than simply listing trips or arranging reservations.

The article sketches a traveler looking for Goa from Hyderabad, December 20–24, with a budget of ₹8,000, an interest in adventure and beaches, and a preference for trains. This is an illustrative prompt from the author, not a report of a real user’s request or a market statistic. The point is that matching would account for several preferences at once, not just the destination.

The author also includes safety and post-trip memories in the wider concept. These are parts of the proposed product design, not independently established user outcomes.

What went wrong with LexAssist
SRIVARDHAN describes LexAssist as a solo project attempted during their second year. In the author’s account, it stalled because new features were added before the core worked, architecture was not thought through before coding, and security was postponed. By the deadline, the work amounted to half-working pieces without a coherent overall experience.

The lesson the author says they carried forward became the first line of TravelMate’s project brief: “a complete, working, secure application beats a huge, half-built one, every single time.” It is a practical shift in priority: make the essential experience coherent and secure before expanding its feature list.

Why TravelMate was also an engineering project
The author wanted the project to demonstrate more than basic create, read, update, and delete operations. The intended product raises problems that are easy to overlook in a feature list but consequential in a shared travel platform:
- Compatibility: Matching people across multiple preferences rather than relying on a destination alone.
- Privacy and safety: Securing real-time chat rooms and treating safety as part of the design.
- Coordination under contention: Handling simultaneous claims on the last available seat in a trip.
- Collaborative logistics: Supporting planning and expense coordination among group members.
SRIVARDHAN says they spent an extended “Phase 0” on architecture, database and API design, and security before implementation. That approach directly responds to the earlier project’s reported weaknesses: establish the foundations and define the core before adding more surface area.
