The best travel zoom camera depends on what you need it to do: choose the Panasonic LUMIX ZS99/TZ99 for the broadest reach in a pocketable body, the ZS300/TZ300 for a 1-inch sensor and a shorter zoom, or the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 V if long reach matters more than pocketability. A fifth option, the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III, is included with an important caveat: its availability has been difficult at reasonable prices, and the evidence here does not establish its current status.
For a traveler asking, “Which type of camera is best for traveling?”, a travel zoom is appealing because one built-in lens can cover wide scenes and distant details without changing lenses. The trade-off is that compact superzooms often use smaller sensors, while cameras with larger sensors or longer lenses can be less convenient to carry. This is a guide to matching those trade-offs—not a claim that one camera is best for everyone.
Five travel zoom cameras to consider
This shortlist draws on current 2026 guides and Panasonic’s 2026 product information. It is not an exhaustive lab test, and the models are not ranked by hands-on performance. Check the regional model name, local availability, seller and current price before buying.
1. Panasonic LUMIX ZS99 / TZ99: maximum reach in a pocketable format
The ZS99, called the TZ99 in some markets, is the reach-first choice here. Digital Camera World lists a 30x optical zoom covering 24–720mm equivalent, 4K video and 4K Photo modes, a stabilized lens, a tilting touchscreen and a built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF). That range is useful when a trip might include both broad landscapes and faraway details, without swapping lenses.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The compromise is the small sensor: Digital Camera World notes limitations in low-light performance and dynamic range, a lens that is not especially bright at the long end, and limited background blur. It suits a traveler who values range and framing flexibility more than low-light versatility or pronounced subject separation. Confirm whether local listings use ZS99 or TZ99 before comparing stock.
2. Panasonic LUMIX ZS300 / TZ300: a 1-inch-sensor, 15x alternative
The ZS300/TZ300 is the more sensor-focused pocket compact in this group, with a 1-inch-type sensor and 15x zoom. RTINGS’ compact travel guide, updated September 29, 2026, lists the ZS300 as its mid-range pick. Panasonic’s March 24, 2026 announcement identifies the TZ300 as a pocket-sized 15x model with a 1.0-type BSI CMOS sensor, approximately 20.1 megapixels, and a Leica-certified 24–360mm-equivalent lens.

These are manufacturer-listed features, not independent findings about image quality.

There are handling trade-offs. RTINGS notes that the ZS300 lacks the earlier ZS200’s viewfinder, has a fixed screen and uses contrast-based autofocus that may lose tracked subjects. If composing with a viewfinder or tilting the screen is important, those limitations matter more than the sensor-size distinction.
Rank #3
- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Panasonic UK lists approximate TZ300 dimensions of 111.2 × 66.4 × 45.2 mm and weight of 337 g with battery and SD card (295 g body-only). Panasonic’s March 2026 announcement gave a European launch RRP of €999 / £869 for black and grey versions planned from early May 2026. Those are dated launch details, not a current price or confirmation of present stock. The regional name and availability may differ.
3. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 V: long reach without a pocket-camera premise
DPReview’s 2026 compact zoom guide names the RX10 V as its best long-zoom compact, listing a 20MP Type-1 sensor and a 24–600mm-equivalent f/2.4–4.0 lens. It is a long-zoom alternative for travelers who want that combination and are willing to carry a larger camera; do not assume it fits a pocket like the Panasonic compact models. The cited guide describes recommendations based on cameras its editorial team used and tested, without financial incentive from brands.

4. Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III: consider only after checking availability
RTINGS says the ZS300 replaced the G7 X Mark III as its mid-range pick because the Canon had become difficult to find at reasonable prices. That is a statement about the availability and pricing problem described by RTINGS, not a claim that every retailer or market has the same stock situation. The source material does not establish current prices, full specifications or a current recommendation for the Canon, so treat it as a model to check—not a directly comparable, verified alternative.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Why this shortlist has four distinct camera choices, not five
The evidence supports four distinct models: the ZS99/TZ99, the ZS300/TZ300, the Sony RX10 V and the Canon G7 X Mark III. ZS300 and TZ300 are regional names for the same model family, not two separate cameras. Counting them separately would create a misleading fifth entry. If you require five distinct, currently verified choices, this material does not establish a fifth one; use the buying criteria below to assess other locally available models rather than treating a duplicate name as another pick.

How to choose the right travel zoom
Match the focal range to the trip
Look at the full 35mm-equivalent range, not just the zoom ratio. The ZS99/TZ99 spans 24–720mm equivalent, while Panasonic lists 24–360mm equivalent for the TZ300. A longer telephoto end helps when subjects are far away; a wide 24mm-equivalent start is useful for broad scenes. Choose based on what you expect to photograph, not the largest zoom number alone.
Balance sensor size against reach and portability
The ZS300/TZ300 and RX10 V have 1-inch/Type-1 sensors, while the cited ZS99/TZ99 coverage emphasizes its small-sensor limitations. A larger sensor can be a useful consideration for low-light work, but sensor size alone does not establish a precise image-quality result. Lens brightness, stabilization and shooting conditions also matter, and a compact superzoom’s range may be the more valuable travel compromise.
Check how you frame and track subjects
A built-in EVF can help when glare makes a rear screen difficult to see; a tilting screen can make low- or high-angle framing easier. The ZS99/TZ99 has both according to Digital Camera World. RTINGS notes that the ZS300 has a fixed screen and no viewfinder, and that its contrast-based autofocus may lose tracked subjects. Those differences are practical buying factors, not merely specification-sheet details.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Consider video, stabilization and charging
If you plan to shoot moving clips, compare resolution and frame-rate options alongside stabilization. Panasonic lists 4K video on both the ZS99/TZ99 and TZ300; its TZ300 announcement also lists high-speed Full HD at 120fps and 5-axis HYBRID O.I.S.+ for video. Panasonic lists USB Type-C charging for the TZ300. These manufacturer specifications do not by themselves predict how well a camera will stabilize a particular handheld shot.
Verify the exact regional model and current offer
Before purchasing, confirm the camera’s regional name, whether the listing is for the intended model, what is included, and whether the seller has current stock. The ZS99/TZ99 naming differs by market, as does the ZS300/TZ300 naming. Panasonic’s cited UK weight and European launch RRP are market-specific and dated; they should not be mistaken for present-day terms elsewhere.
