For a short trip, roaming is the easiest option and can be the cheapest when your home plan includes the destination or offers a low-cost pass. A travel eSIM is usually the best balance of predictable prepaid data and easy setup if your phone is unlocked. A local SIM or eSIM can deliver the lowest per-unit cost and a local phone number on a longer stay, but it adds purchase, registration and compatibility steps. The right choice depends on destination, trip length, data use, your carrier’s exact price, whether the phone is unlocked, and whether you need to keep your home number active.

What each option actually does

International roaming

Roaming keeps your home SIM or eSIM and connects it to a partner network in another country. Your home carrier bills the calls, texts and data. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), in guidance modified October 7, 2024, defines roaming as using another provider’s network and warns that international fees can apply to all three services.

Travel eSIM

A travel eSIM is a separately purchased digital SIM profile, most often prepaid and focused on data. Plans vary by data allowance, validity period and countries or regions covered. Activation commonly uses a QR code or the provider’s app, so you can install it before departure or after landing. Many plans are data-only, meaning calls and texts require an internet calling app or a separate active line.

Local SIM or eSIM

A local option is bought from a carrier in the destination country, either as a physical SIM or an eSIM. Local prepaid and postpaid plans often include a local number. The CRTC says buying a local SIM, eSIM or prepaid plan can avoid roaming charges altogether. Some countries require passport or other identity registration, and the phone must be unlocked and compatible with the local network.

Which option is cheapest?

There is no universal winner: the destination and your existing home plan matter more than the label “eSIM” or “roaming.” Ofcom’s 2026 comparison, based on prices collected in August and September 2025, illustrates the difference.

Scenario Travel eSIM Selected UK roaming options
10 GB for 10 days in selected EU destinations Average £19.06 Average £19.50; range £17.00–£21.50
10 GB for 10 days in the United States Average £21.99 Average £49.28; range £36.00–£78.60

Ofcom says this comparison covers only the listed destinations, ten-day duration and 10 GB usage. It excludes setup effort, and a travel eSIM may not save money when your existing plan already includes roaming. Local physical-SIM prices were not averaged globally because airport markups, registration rules, validity, allowances and country-specific pricing make one worldwide figure misleading.

Compare the trade-offs before you leave

Factor Roaming Travel eSIM Local SIM/eSIM
Setup Easiest; your carrier account remains unchanged Install before departure or on arrival with a QR code or app Buy and possibly register on arrival or online; physical SIMs require a swap
Phone number Keeps your home number Usually data-only; keep the home line separately if the phone supports dual SIM Often supplies a local number; the home number may be inactive
Cost pattern Excellent when included or discounted; expensive without a pass Predictable prepaid price Often competitive for long stays, but varies by country and retailer
Coverage Uses your carrier’s roaming partners Uses the partner networks listed by the eSIM plan Uses the selected local network, which may have stronger local coverage
Main risks Unexpected charges, daily-pass limits and data caps Locked phone, activation or coverage limits, and data-only service ID rules, queues or language barriers, compatibility problems and losing the physical SIM

How to choose for common trip types

Short holiday or weekend trip

Start with your home carrier’s exact destination price. If roaming is included or a pass costs less than a comparable prepaid plan, it is the simplest choice. Otherwise, a travel eSIM avoids a shop visit and gives a fixed data budget.

Two-week trip

Compare the carrier’s total price for the full 14 days with a travel eSIM whose validity covers the whole stay. Do not compare only the headline data price: check whether the plan slows after a threshold, permits hotspot use and includes voice or SMS. A local SIM can be worthwhile if you need a local number or find a clearly lower destination price, but registration time and transport to a retailer are part of the practical cost.

Long stay, frequent travel or heavy data use

A local plan often becomes more attractive because it can combine a local number with a larger allowance and local-network coverage. Research the country’s registration requirements and bring the required identification. For frequent multi-country travel, a regional travel eSIM may reduce repeated purchases, but verify every country and network listed.

Phone and number requirements

Unlocked and compatible hardware

An alternate SIM or eSIM requires an unlocked phone and network compatibility. On an iPhone, Apple’s guidance says the Settings screen should show “No SIM Restrictions” under the carrier-lock information when the device is unlocked. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and the destination plan’s supported bands before buying; an eSIM-capable phone is not automatically compatible with every network.

Keeping your home number active

Roaming keeps the home number automatically. A travel eSIM usually supplies data only, so use dual-SIM capability to leave the home line available for incoming calls or verification messages while assigning the travel profile as the data line. Apple notes that international roaming with an eSIM works the same way as roaming with a physical SIM.

Set up a travel eSIM without surprise charges

  1. Check your home carrier’s exact destination rate, included roaming countries and any pass. Do not infer the price from another country or another plan.
  2. Confirm the phone is unlocked, eSIM-capable (or has a free physical-SIM slot) and compatible with the required network bands.
  3. Buy a plan whose countries, validity, data allowance, speed policy and hotspot rules match the trip. Confirm whether voice and SMS are included.
  4. Install the profile by QR code or provider app while you have reliable internet. Keep the activation details until the connection works.
  5. In the phone’s SIM settings, select the travel eSIM as the mobile-data line. Turn off data roaming on the home line. With both lines enabled, the home line can still generate roaming fees if it uses mobile data.
  6. After landing, test data and check the selected network. Keep emergency numbers and important contacts available offline.

Buying a local SIM safely

  1. Check whether the country requires passport or other ID registration. The U.S. Department of State warns that some countries require this.
  2. Buy from an official carrier shop or a reputable retailer, and confirm the total validity, data allowance, speed limits, tethering policy and local number before payment.
  3. Ask the seller to activate and test the SIM or eSIM. Keep the receipt and the original physical SIM in a labeled case if you remove it.
  4. Record the local number and any account or top-up instructions. Re-enable the home line only when you understand its roaming settings.

EU and EEA exception: Roam Like at Home

If your home plan is eligible, the European Union’s Roam Like at Home rules can make roaming the best-value choice within the covered area. The Council of the EU says the scheme covers all 27 EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway; Moldova and Ukraine joined on January 1, 2026. Fair-use data limits still apply, and a four-month anti-permanent-roaming rule is intended for people who spend or use mobile service abroad continuously rather than ordinary travelers. Check your operator’s fair-use allowance before relying on domestic terms.

Questions to answer before buying

  • What is the exact total price for this destination and number of days?
  • How much high-speed data is included, and what happens after the allowance?
  • Can the plan use hotspot or tethering?
  • Does it include a phone number, calls or SMS, or is it data-only?
  • Which partner networks and countries are covered?
  • Is the phone unlocked and compatible?
  • Must a local SIM be registered with a passport or ID?
  • How will you receive emergency alerts, bank codes or other messages sent to the home number?
