Windows 11 offers three practical ways to keep performance data visible: pin the Xbox Game Bar Performance widget for the quickest setup, configure MSI Afterburner with RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS) for detailed appearance and metric controls, or use NVIDIA FrameView when you need frame-time, latency, percentile, and power data. PowerToys Always On Top can keep an ordinary monitoring window above other applications, but it does not measure performance or guarantee priority over every topmost window.

Start with Game Bar if you only need a readable, semi-transparent panel. Move to Afterburner and RTSS when you need to choose individual sensors, change the overlay position, or add a colored translucent backdrop. Check the game’s graphics API before choosing FrameView, because its version 1.1 guide documents no in-game overlay support for DirectX 9 and DirectX 10.

Choose the overlay method that matches your goal

There is no single Windows 11 switch that turns every performance monitor into a transparent overlay. Each method solves a different problem: Game Bar supplies a native, pinned widget; Afterburner and RTSS provide granular sensor and rendering controls; FrameView emphasizes detailed frame and power telemetry; and PowerToys only changes the z-order of a window you already have open.

Method Best fit Appearance controls Metric coverage Important compatibility or behavior note
Xbox Game Bar Performance widget Fastest setup inside Windows 11 Transparency option in the widget’s Options; graph entries can be selected Configurable performance graphs described by MSI; exact metric list depends on the current Game Bar version Menu labels can differ between app versions; pin the widget to keep it visible
MSI Afterburner with RTSS Custom sensor selection and detailed OSD styling RTSS controls size, position or corner, text/graph mode, fill color, and opacity GPU, CPU, RAM, frame-rate, temperature, and graph entries described in MSI’s guide Requires per-metric OSD selection and an OSD toggle hotkey
NVIDIA FrameView 1.1 Frame-time analysis, percentiles, latency, dropped frames, and power readings Use the controls documented by the FrameView 1.1 application; a complete styling specification is not stated in the guide summary Average rendered FPS, frame percentiles, dropped frames, render-present latency, GPU and CPU utilization/speed/temperature, and power-related readings The 1.1 guide says DX9 and DX10 games have no overlay support, although capture data can still be logged
PowerToys Always On Top Keeping an existing monitoring window visible Pinning behavior only; it does not add transparency or graphs None Win+Ctrl+T pins the active window by default, but another topmost window may appear above it

For most people, the decision is straightforward: use Game Bar for a simple readout, Afterburner plus RTSS for control, and FrameView for specialized measurements. Use Always On Top only when the monitoring program displays data in a normal window rather than an in-game OSD.

Set up a transparent overlay with Xbox Game Bar

The Game Bar route keeps the setup close to Windows 11. MSI’s instructions describe a pinned Performance widget with an Options area for transparency and graph selection. Because Xbox Game Bar is updated independently of the operating system, the wording or location of a control may vary slightly on your PC.

  1. Launch the game or other full-screen application you want to monitor.
  2. Press Win+G to open Xbox Game Bar.
  3. Open Widget Menu, then choose Performance.
  4. In the Performance widget, select the pin control so the panel remains visible after Game Bar closes.
  5. Open the widget’s Options. Adjust the transparency control and choose which graph entries should appear.
  6. Drag the pinned widget to a region that does not cover controls, subtitles, or a minimap. Close Game Bar while leaving the widget pinned.

Make the Game Bar panel readable

Transparency is a compromise, not a guarantee of invisibility. A low-opacity panel can look excellent over a dark scene and disappear over a bright sky or a busy user interface. Increase the panel’s opacity when text blends into the game, or move it to a portion of the image with stable contrast. If the current widget exposes fewer graph choices than expected, that is a version difference rather than evidence that the pin failed.

What Game Bar can and cannot do

  • It can keep the Performance widget on screen after you close the main Game Bar strip.
  • It provides a transparency option and lets you choose graph entries through Options.
  • It is not documented as a universal, fully themeable overlay system. The supported claim is specifically about the pinned Performance widget and its transparency control.
  • It does not solve compatibility for every game, capture mode, or graphics API. If the widget does not appear, try the troubleshooting checks later in this article before switching tools.

Build a more controllable OSD with Afterburner and RTSS

Afterburner and RTSS separate the data-selection task from the on-screen rendering task. In Afterburner, you decide which sensors are eligible for the overlay. RTSS then controls where and how that information is drawn, including a translucent fill when plain text lacks contrast.

Select the measurements in Afterburner

  1. Open Afterburner and choose Settings.
  2. Select the Monitoring tab. The hardware-monitoring list contains the available statistics.
  3. Click a statistic you want to display, such as a frame-rate value, GPU or CPU temperature, utilization, memory information, or a graph entry.
  4. Enable Show in On Screen Display for that selected statistic.
  5. Repeat the selection for every metric you want. Keeping the list short makes the overlay easier to read and reduces the chance that important values are hidden below less useful ones.
  6. Open the On Screen Display tab and assign a hotkey for showing or hiding the OSD. Use a key combination that will not conflict with the game.

MSI’s feature description covers GPU, CPU, RAM, frame-rate, temperature, and graph information, but the exact sensor names depend on the hardware and software versions installed. A laptop, desktop, or integrated-graphics system may expose a different list.

Style and position the overlay in RTSS

  1. Open RTSS by using Afterburner’s More button or by selecting RTSS from its system-tray menu.
  2. Set the overlay’s size and choose its corner or on-screen position. Put it where the game’s heads-up display leaves unused space.
  3. Choose a text or graph display mode when you need either compact numbers or a visual history.
  4. If text loses contrast against the game, enable Display Fill.
  5. Set the fill color and opacity. A dark, partially opaque fill usually separates light text from a bright scene, while a lighter fill can work better with dark text.
  6. Return to the game and use the OSD hotkey configured in Afterburner to verify that the panel appears and disappears as expected.

The fill is a backdrop, not a replacement for transparency. At zero or very low opacity it contributes little contrast; at high opacity it can obscure the content you are trying to monitor. Adjust it while viewing the game’s most varied scenes rather than tuning it only against a static menu.

Organize a useful sensor set

Start with one frame-rate value, one GPU load or temperature value, and one CPU load or temperature value. Add RAM or GPU-memory information only when it answers a specific question, such as diagnosing a memory limit. Graphs are useful for spotting a spike or sustained rise, but they occupy more space than a single number. If you need many metrics, group the most important readings at the top and place occasional diagnostics below them.

Use FrameView when detailed frame and power data matter

NVIDIA’s FrameView 1.1 user guide describes a metric-focused approach. It lists average rendered FPS, frame percentiles, dropped frames, render-present latency, GPU utilization, GPU core speed, GPU temperature, CPU utilization, CPU speed, CPU temperature, and power-related readings. That makes it a better fit for diagnosing smoothness, latency, or energy behavior than for a minimalist corner counter.

Check the documented prerequisites

  • The guide covers Windows 10 and later.
  • It describes single-GPU configurations for NVIDIA GeForce, AMD, and Intel hardware.
  • Its overlay support limitation is explicit: DX9 and DX10 games do not receive an in-game overlay.
  • Capture data can still be logged for those unsupported overlay APIs, so a missing on-screen panel does not necessarily mean that all measurement is unavailable.

Interpret the DX9/DX10 limitation correctly

Do not treat FrameView 1.1 as an overlay that works in every game. Before troubleshooting installation or hotkeys, identify the game’s rendering API and whether it is running in a supported presentation mode. If it is a DirectX 9 or DirectX 10 title, use logged capture data or select another overlay method instead of expecting the FrameView panel to appear.

Keep a normal monitoring window above the game with PowerToys

PowerToys Always On Top is useful when your chosen monitor opens as a conventional desktop window. Activate the window, then press Win+Ctrl+T, the default shortcut documented by Microsoft. A visible pin indicator shows that the window is marked always-on-top; press the shortcut again to remove the pin.

This utility does not create performance measurements, render an OSD, or add transparency controls. It only changes the stacking behavior of the active window. Microsoft also cautions that another window marked topmost can still appear above it. Therefore, Always On Top is a window-management supplement, not a substitute for Game Bar, RTSS, or FrameView.

Understand Windows 11 windowed-game optimizations

Windows 11 includes optimizations for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless presentation. Those settings address how the game is presented by the operating system; Microsoft does not describe them as a universal overlay-compatibility switch. Enabling the optimization cannot guarantee that every monitoring widget or OSD will render over every game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When an overlay fails, treat the game API, window mode, and monitoring utility as separate variables. Test the same tool in a windowed or borderless mode, then check the utility’s own compatibility notes. Do not infer from a successful Game Bar pin that FrameView or an RTSS OSD must behave identically.

Fix common transparent-overlay problems

The widget or OSD is not visible

  • For Game Bar, press Win+G, reopen Widget Menu > Performance, and confirm that the pin is still enabled.
  • For Afterburner, verify that each desired statistic has Show in On Screen Display enabled and that the OSD hotkey is assigned.
  • For RTSS, open it from Afterburner’s More button or the system tray and confirm that its configuration is active for the game.
  • For FrameView, check the game’s API first; DX9 and DX10 overlay support is absent in the 1.1 guide.

The text is hidden against the scene

Move the overlay to a less busy corner, raise transparency or opacity as appropriate, and use RTSS Display Fill with a contrasting color. Recheck it in bright and dark scenes. Transparency that looks elegant in a menu can become unreadable during actual gameplay.

The panel covers important game controls

Use a smaller RTSS size, move the Game Bar widget, or remove nonessential metrics. A second display can be convenient for separate monitoring graphs, but it is optional; none of these overlay methods requires an additional monitor for the core setup.

A pinned window is still covered

Always On Top only marks the active ordinary window as topmost. Another topmost window can supersede it. Close or unpin competing topmost windows, or use an in-game OSD when the monitoring program supports one.

Labels do not match these instructions

Game Bar, Afterburner, RTSS, and FrameView can change their interfaces between releases. Use the nearest equivalent control, especially for Options, Monitoring, On Screen Display, and Display Fill. The underlying workflow remains: select measurements, enable display, choose a hotkey, then tune position and contrast.

A practical decision checklist

  • Need the fewest steps: choose Game Bar, pin Performance, and adjust Options transparency.
  • Need exact sensor selection and styling: choose Afterburner with RTSS and configure each metric individually.
  • Need percentiles, dropped frames, latency, or power readings: evaluate FrameView 1.1, while checking API and hardware limits first.
  • Already have a monitoring window: use PowerToys Always On Top, remembering that it adds no measurements and cannot outrank every topmost window.
  • Text is hard to read: improve contrast with position, opacity, and (in RTSS) a colored Display Fill rather than making the overlay completely transparent.

What to expect from a well-tuned overlay

A useful overlay is visible without becoming the subject of the screen. Keep only metrics that answer the question you are investigating, place them away from interactive controls, and test readability against both bright and dark content. Game Bar is the sensible starting point for a quick Windows 11 setup. RTSS is the stronger choice when appearance and sensor selection matter. FrameView is the specialist option for detailed frame and power telemetry, with the documented DX9/DX10 overlay restriction kept in mind.
