Transit spectroscopy, direct imaging, and phase curves answer different exoplanet questions rather than competing for one universal winner. Use transit spectroscopy to identify molecules in the atmosphere’s edge when a planet crosses its star; direct imaging to isolate the planet’s own reflected or thermal light and measure its position and orbit; and phase curves to infer how brightness, temperature, and reflectivity change around the planet. The most complete picture comes from combining methods when a target’s alignment, brightness, contrast, and orbital period make that possible.

What each technique measures

Method Viewing geometry Primary signal Strongest outputs Most important constraint
Transit spectroscopy The planet crosses the stellar disk, and some starlight passes through its atmospheric limb. Wavelength-dependent changes in transit depth. Atmospheric molecules and structure along the upper, slant-path atmosphere; a transit radius. The system must be aligned so the planet transits, and clouds or hazes can mute spectral features.
Direct imaging The planet is spatially separated from its host star and its faint light is isolated. Reflected or emitted planetary photons, plus the planet’s location over time. Orbital position and motion, broad photometry, and—in suitable cases—a low-resolution spectrum from an imaging spectrograph. Extreme star–planet contrast and the need for sufficient angular separation; current detections favor bright, often young giant planets.
Phase curves The total system brightness is monitored as the planet presents different illuminated longitudes during its orbit. Periodic brightness variation, often including the transit and secondary eclipse. Longitudinal reflectivity, day–night temperature differences, heat redistribution, and hotspot displacement. Atmospheric and orbital models must disentangle albedo, temperature, clouds, inclination, and circulation.

These geometries determine which planets can be studied and which physical layers are emphasized. A transiting world can be excellent for transmission measurements but invisible to an imager if its projected separation is too small. Conversely, a young giant may be bright enough to image while never crossing our line of sight to its star.

Transit spectroscopy: reading the atmospheric edge

How the measurement is made

During a transit, the planet blocks a small fraction of starlight. Most of the blocked light is set by the planet’s opaque disk, but a thin ring of starlight travels through the atmospheric limb before reaching a telescope. Molecules absorb particular wavelengths along that grazing path. Comparing the star’s spectrum during transit with the spectrum outside transit reveals wavelength-dependent changes in the apparent transit depth.

NASA describes this as light from a star traveling through an orbiting planet’s atmosphere and carrying information about where it has been. ESA likewise notes that absorption at characteristic wavelengths identifies particles in the atmosphere. The result is called transmission spectroscopy.

What it can reveal

  • Molecular composition: Absorption signatures can indicate water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and other constituents when the signal is strong enough and models separate the planetary spectrum from stellar and instrumental effects.
  • Altitude-sensitive structure: Because the path crosses the limb at a range of heights, the method is especially sensitive to the upper, slant-path atmosphere. The apparent size of the planet changes slightly with wavelength, linking feature amplitude to atmospheric scale height.
  • A transit radius: The wavelength-dependent transit profile naturally supplies a radius at the pressure level probed by the observation. That radius is not necessarily the same as a solid surface radius, because different wavelengths become opaque at different atmospheric altitudes.

Typical observing sequence

  1. Confirm geometry and timing. Astronomers need a known or predicted transit and a host star bright enough for precision spectroscopy. A planet that does not pass in front of the star cannot be measured with this technique.
  2. Record a baseline. Spectra are collected before and after the transit to establish the star’s out-of-transit spectrum and track instrumental or stellar changes.
  3. Observe the crossing. As the planet moves across the stellar disk, the telescope records the small wavelength-dependent difference caused by the atmospheric annulus.
  4. Remove non-planetary signals. Stellar activity, detector behavior, Earth’s atmosphere for ground observations, and changing observing conditions must be modeled or corrected.
  5. Fit atmospheric models. The measured spectrum is compared with models containing candidate molecules, temperature structures, clouds, and hazes. The output is a set of favored compositions and uncertainties, not a direct photograph of the atmosphere.

Where it is strongest—and where it fails

Transmission spectroscopy is the natural first choice when the question is, “Which gases are present in a transiting atmosphere?” It benefits from the long grazing path through the limb, but that same geometry makes the result vulnerable to high-altitude clouds and hazes. A cloud deck can hide deeper layers, while a haze can flatten or mute molecular features. A featureless spectrum therefore does not prove that the atmosphere lacks the molecule being sought; it may mean that the accessible limb is obscured or that the signal is below the measurement precision.

Selection is also fundamental: only systems with a favorable transit alignment qualify. Among those, the host star must be sufficiently bright and stable, and the planet must produce a measurable change in the combined spectrum. Transit spectroscopy is therefore not a census of all exoplanets; it is a detailed probe of a geometrically selected subset.

Direct imaging: isolating the planet’s own light

How the measurement is made

Direct imaging attempts to separate a planet’s photons from the much brighter light of its host star. Observatories use a coronagraph or related starlight-suppression system, followed by image processing that models and removes residual stellar light and speckles. The remaining point source can be tracked at multiple epochs to measure its position and orbital motion.

Unlike transmission spectroscopy, imaging does not require the planet to cross the stellar disk. It observes light that has been reflected from the planet or generated by the planet’s own heat. An imaging spectrograph can spread that light into a low-resolution spectrum, while broadband images provide photometry in selected wavelength ranges.

What direct images provide

  • Spatial information: The measured separation and position angle locate the planet relative to its star. Repeated observations trace orbital motion and constrain the orbit.
  • Planetary brightness: Reflected-light brightness depends on the planet’s illumination and reflectivity; thermal brightness depends on its temperature and emitted energy.
  • Lower-atmosphere access: Because the observation samples the planet’s own outgoing or reflected light rather than a grazing stellar beam, it is less sensitive to high-altitude clouds and hazes than transit spectroscopy and can probe deeper atmospheric layers under favorable conditions.
  • Spectral clues: Low-resolution spectra can reveal broad molecular or cloud-related features, but the available signal is usually limited compared with the host star’s brightness.

Why current targets are unusual

The contrast problem is severe: a star can overwhelm a planet by many orders of magnitude in brightness, and the angular separation may be smaller than the telescope can cleanly resolve. Young, hot giant planets are favored because they retain heat from formation and emit more infrared light. Their wide orbits also provide more angular separation than a close-in planet would have. This target bias means that today’s directly imaged sample is not representative of the full exoplanet population.

What imaging cannot determine by itself

A NASA technical report emphasizes a limitation that is easy to miss in image captions: direct imaging alone cannot directly measure a planet’s radius or mass. Imaging supplies position, orbital motion, brightness, and, in some cases, a spectrum. Radius generally requires a transit or another geometric constraint, while mass usually comes from radial-velocity, astrometric, or dynamical information. Combining those measurements with an image can produce a much stronger physical interpretation than the image alone.

Typical observing sequence

  1. Select a favorable system. The planet must be bright enough and sufficiently separated from the star for the telescope and coronagraph to distinguish it.
  2. Suppress the star. A coronagraph or equivalent optical system blocks or attenuates the central starlight while preserving the surrounding field.
  3. Characterize residuals. Speckles, detector artifacts, and imperfect wave-front correction can mimic a planet, so observations use calibration data and reference-star or multi-epoch techniques.
  4. Confirm the source. A candidate should move consistently with an orbit and remain compatible with the expected point-spread function and color.
  5. Extract photometry or a spectrum. The recovered planetary signal is converted into brightnesses or spectral points, then interpreted with atmospheric and evolutionary models.

Phase curves: converting changing brightness into a longitudinal map

The orbital light pattern

A phase curve follows the total brightness of a star–planet system as the planet moves through its orbit and presents different illuminated portions. The planet is usually unresolved, so the telescope does not see a literal disk map. Instead, repeated measurements of tiny brightness changes are inverted with orbital and atmospheric models.

NASA’s phase-curve diagram identifies three recognizable events in the orbital light curve: the reduced contribution from the planet’s night side, the transit, and the secondary eclipse, when the planet passes behind the star. The diagram was released January 8, 2024, and NASA lists a last update of September 22, 2026.

Reflected-light phase curves

In reflected light, the changing illuminated fraction and surface or cloud reflectivity alter the system brightness. Differences between the brightest and faintest orbital phases constrain how reflective different longitudes are. ESA explains that studying small differences in received sunlight during an orbit can reveal how reflective a planet’s surface is. For an atmosphere-bearing planet, clouds and scattering particles also contribute to the apparent albedo, so “surface reflectivity” and “planetary albedo” should not be treated as interchangeable in every case.

Thermal-emission phase curves

In thermal wavelengths, the curve tracks how the planet’s hot dayside and cooler nightside rotate into and out of view. The phase offset between maximum brightness and the point directly facing the star indicates hotspot displacement. The amplitude and shape constrain day–night temperature contrast and the efficiency of atmospheric heat redistribution.

NASA describes Webb phase-curve observations as building a map of atmospheric temperature as a function of longitude. A spectroscopic phase curve can add wavelength information to that map, while broadband photometry offers a simpler measure of total brightness variation.

What the observation requires

  1. Choose a bright, repeatedly observable target. The system must be monitored for enough of an orbit to distinguish planetary variability from stellar variability and instrumental drift.
  2. Establish the orbital events. Transit and secondary-eclipse timings anchor the phase and help separate the planet’s contribution from the star’s baseline flux.
  3. Measure many phases. Coverage around the full orbit is more informative than a single snapshot because it shows how brightness rises, peaks, and falls.
  4. Model the light curve. Atmospheric circulation, cloud distribution, albedo, inclination, and orbital parameters can produce similar-looking signals, so fits must consider their degeneracies.
  5. Translate variation into geography. The final product is a longitudinal pattern of reflectivity or temperature, not a resolved image.

Side-by-side comparison for planning a study

Planning question Transit spectroscopy Direct imaging Phase curves
What is observed? Changes in the star’s spectrum while the planet crosses the disk. The planet’s isolated reflected or emitted light and its changing position. System brightness as orbital longitude changes.
Best-known science return Molecular absorption and limb-atmosphere structure. Orbit, broad photometry, reflected or thermal spectrum, and deeper atmospheric access. Longitudinal reflectivity, temperature, heat transport, and hotspot location.
Alignment requirement Transit alignment is mandatory. Transit alignment is unnecessary, but projected separation must be resolvable. A complete transit is not mandatory, but a bright target and useful orbital coverage are.
Typical target bias Known transiting planets around sufficiently bright hosts. Bright, often young giant planets with favorable contrast and separation. Bright systems that can be observed repeatedly over an orbital period.
Radius information A transit radius is naturally measured, with altitude and wavelength qualifications. Not directly measured by imaging alone. Not a direct output; radius may enter the model through other observations.
Mass information Requires radial-velocity, dynamical, astrometric, or other complementary data. Not directly measured by imaging alone; orbital dynamics or another method is needed. Requires complementary dynamics rather than the phase variation alone.
Main interpretation risk Clouds and hazes flatten features; stellar activity can mimic spectral changes. Stellar leakage, speckles, small sample size, and model dependence can create false or ambiguous signals. Albedo, temperature, clouds, inclination, and circulation can be degenerate.

No single, method-neutral sensitivity number fairly ranks all three approaches. Their signals have different units, observing conditions, noise sources, and target populations, so a claim that one method is simply “most sensitive” would be misleading.

Which method should astronomers choose?

If the goal is to identify atmospheric molecules

Start with transit spectroscopy when the planet transits and the host is suitable. It directly tests for wavelength-specific absorption in the limb and is the clearest route to constituents such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane. Include the cloud and haze possibilities in the observing strategy; a weak or flat spectrum may reflect obscuration rather than a chemically empty atmosphere.

If the goal is the planet’s own light and orbit

Consider direct imaging when the planet has enough angular separation and contrast. It is the relevant technique for locating a non-transiting planet, measuring orbital motion on the sky, and studying reflected or thermal photons without requiring a transit chord. For current instruments, that usually means prioritizing young, hot giant planets rather than assuming that an Earth-sized, close-in world is equally accessible.

If the goal is weather, heat transport, or longitudinal structure

Use a phase curve when the system is bright enough for repeated monitoring. Thermal curves address day–night temperature differences and hotspot offsets; reflected-light curves address changing illumination and albedo. A phase curve is especially valuable when a single average spectrum would hide strong differences between the dayside and nightside.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the goal is a complete physical model

Combine methods whenever the target permits it. A transit can provide radius and transmission information; radial velocity or astrometry can provide mass; a phase curve can add circulation and longitudinal temperature; and an image can supply spatial separation and orbital position. These measurements constrain different parameters, reducing the chance that one model absorbs every uncertainty into an unconstrained cloud, inclination, or temperature assumption.

How the three methods complement one another

Different atmospheric paths

Transmission spectroscopy samples a long, slant path through the limb. Direct imaging samples the planet’s own emitted or reflected light and is less affected by a high-altitude obscuring layer. Phase curves combine all visible longitudes over time. Comparing their results can reveal whether a molecule or cloud signature is confined to the limb, concentrated on the dayside, or distributed around the planet.

Different kinds of geometry

A transit is a one-dimensional alignment event: the planet crosses a particular chord of the star. Imaging supplies a two-dimensional position on the sky but usually lacks a direct radius or mass. A phase curve supplies a time sequence tied to orbital longitude but not a resolved picture. Treating these geometries as interchangeable leads to overconfident maps and incorrect physical inferences.

A practical combined-observation workflow

  1. Inventory known parameters. Record whether the planet transits, its estimated orbit, host-star brightness, and any existing mass or radius constraints.
  2. Match the observable to the method. Assign molecular-composition questions to transmission, spatial-orbit questions to imaging, and longitudinal-weather questions to phase curves.
  3. Identify the dominant bias. Check alignment for transmission, contrast and separation for imaging, and orbital brightness and monitoring duration for phase curves.
  4. Plan complementary measurements. Pair a transit radius with a dynamical mass, or pair a phase curve with a spectrum, instead of asking one data set to determine every parameter.
  5. Fit jointly but test alternatives. Compare atmospheric models with different cloud, haze, albedo, circulation, and inclination assumptions. A joint fit is useful only if it preserves the distinct uncertainties of each measurement.

Common interpretation mistakes

  • Calling a phase curve a map or image. It is a model-derived longitudinal pattern from unresolved brightness, not a camera view of surface pixels.
  • Assuming a non-detection means no atmosphere. Clouds, hazes, low scale height, stellar variability, or insufficient signal can all suppress a transmission feature.
  • Inferring mass from an image alone. Orbital motion can constrain dynamics in combination with other information, but a direct image does not directly weigh the planet.
  • Equating reflected brightness with surface composition. Clouds and atmospheric scattering can dominate the apparent reflectivity, particularly for planets without a visible solid surface.
  • Ignoring target-selection bias. The planets easiest to image are not the planets easiest to study in transit, and neither sample represents all exoplanets.
  • Overinterpreting a single phase-curve peak. A hotspot offset or brightness maximum depends on wavelength and on assumptions about inclination, circulation, and clouds.

Where the field is going

Large surveys are extending atmospheric comparisons beyond a few famous planets. ESA says its Ariel mission will study the atmospheres of as many as 1,000 exoplanets; that figure describes the mission’s planned survey scale, not a guarantee that every target will yield the same molecular detections or phase-curve quality. A broad survey is valuable precisely because it can test how atmospheric properties vary across many host stars, planet sizes, temperatures, and orbital environments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Future progress will depend less on declaring a single winning technique than on matching instruments and observing schedules to the geometry of each system. Better starlight suppression expands imaging targets, more stable spectrophotometry improves transit and phase signals, and joint orbital analyses turn separate measurements into constraints on mass, radius, atmosphere, and climate.

A decision framework in one minute

  • Does the planet transit, and is the question “What gases are in its atmosphere?” Choose transit spectroscopy.
  • Is the planet separated from its star on the sky, and is the question “Where is it and what light does it emit or reflect?” Choose direct imaging.
  • Can the system be monitored repeatedly, and is the question “How do temperature or reflectivity change around the orbit?” Choose a phase curve.
  • Do you need mass, radius, composition, and circulation together? Combine the relevant method with radial-velocity, astrometric, dynamical, or transit measurements rather than expecting any one technique to provide everything.
