Transferring a meeting in Exchange Online does not transfer ownership of its associated Teams online meeting. After an administrator uses Invoke-ChangeMeetingOrganizer, the new calendar organizer should manually update the meeting series with new Teams meeting information, then review the event’s meeting options and participant roles.
What changes when an Exchange administrator transfers a meeting?
Microsoft’s Exchange PowerShell cmdlet Invoke-ChangeMeetingOrganizer transfers an existing meeting or series in the calendar. The change can take effect at the next occurrence or from a specified future date; earlier instances in a recurring series remain on the original organizer’s calendar. The cmdlet documentation explicitly cautions: “For Teams-enabled meetings, changing the meeting organizer doesn’t update the organizer of the associated Teams online meeting.” Microsoft Learn’s cmdlet reference explains the distinction.
That means a calendar transfer alone does not establish that the new organizer can join or manage the Teams meeting, nor does it establish that the old join link or other Teams meeting details have been transferred. Treat calendar ownership and Teams meeting information as separate tasks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to update Teams information after the transfer
- Confirm the calendar transfer. Ask the Exchange administrator to verify that the meeting or series has been transferred to the intended organizer and note when the change takes effect.
- Have the new organizer update the series. Manually update the Teams-enabled series with new Teams meeting information. Microsoft says this is needed so the new organizer can join and manage the online meeting. Do not assume the existing join link or all meeting assets will remain usable.
- Check the event and invitation. Open the meeting as the new organizer and confirm that the intended meeting details and participants are present. If attendees need updated invitation details, make sure the organizer sends the appropriate update.
- Review meeting options and roles. Open the event in the Teams calendar, select View event, then Options. Check the settings that matter for this meeting, such as who can bypass or manage the lobby and who can present.
- Verify before the next occurrence. Confirm that the new organizer can access and manage the Teams meeting, and that participants have the correct meeting information before the next scheduled instance.
Microsoft’s Teams meeting options guidance describes the event’s Options panel and the controls available there. The exact choices can vary with organization policy, meeting type, and licensing.

What meeting options should the new organizer review?
- Lobby access: Review who can bypass the lobby and who can admit or manage people waiting there.
- Presenter permissions: Confirm who is allowed to present. Do not assume the previous organizer’s preferred role setup matches the new meeting owner’s needs.
- Recording and transcription: Check whether the relevant controls are available and configured appropriately. Some recording or transcript access controls require Teams Premium or a Copilot license, and availability varies by meeting type.
- Organization defaults: Individual organizers can change options for a particular meeting only within the limits set by IT. For broader defaults, consult the organization’s Teams administrator.
Microsoft’s meeting policy overview explains how administrator policies govern meeting behavior. For options that depend on meeting type or licensing, consult Microsoft’s recording and transcription options guidance.
Can a co-organizer take over instead?
A co-organizer can help manage a meeting and change meeting options, but co-organizer status is not an organizer transfer. Microsoft says co-organizers cannot change the organizer’s role, edit invitation information, or send updated invitations. Use a co-organizer for operational support; use the Exchange transfer path when the calendar organizer itself must change. See Microsoft’s co-organizer guidance for the role’s limits.

Why Outlook’s Change organizer feature is different
Microsoft’s Outlook support page says its Change organizer feature does not currently support online Teams meetings. That statement concerns the Outlook feature, not the Exchange Online administrative cmdlet. The cmdlet is a separate calendar-transfer route, and its own documentation warns that it does not update the associated Teams online meeting organizer. Do not treat either path as proof that Teams meeting information has been refreshed. See Microsoft’s Outlook organizer-change guidance and the Exchange cmdlet reference.

If the transfer or settings are unavailable
- The cmdlet is missing or unavailable: Stop and ask the Exchange administrator to confirm that the organization has the cloud cmdlet enabled and that the account has the required permissions. Do not assume an ordinary meeting attendee can run it.
- An option is absent or locked: Ask the Teams administrator whether a meeting policy, meeting type, or license limits that setting.
- The new organizer cannot manage the Teams meeting: Confirm that the new organizer manually updated the series with new Teams meeting information rather than relying only on the Exchange calendar transfer.
- Only help managing the meeting is needed: A co-organizer may be appropriate if the calendar organizer can remain unchanged; it cannot replace the organizer or send updated invitations.
