The best way to move photos from a Samsung Galaxy to an iPad depends on whether the iPad is still in its initial setup. For a new or reset iPad, Apple’s Move to iOS flow can transfer camera photos, videos, albums, files and folders directly from the Galaxy. For an iPad that is already configured, Apple’s documented photo workflow uses a computer: copy the Galaxy’s files (usually from DCIM) to the computer, then sync them to the iPad with Finder, iTunes or Apple Devices.

You can also use a compatible USB-C data cable instead of Wi-Fi during Move to iOS, or sign in to a cloud-storage app when the pictures already live online. Samsung Smart Switch is not a direct Galaxy-to-iPad solution; Samsung says it transfers content into Galaxy phones and tablets, not to iOS devices.

Choose the method that matches your iPad

Check the iPad’s setup state first. Move to iOS is offered while an iPad is being set up. Once setup has finished, Apple says you must either erase the iPad and begin setup again or transfer the photos manually with a computer.

Method Use it when What it can move Extra equipment
Move to iOS over a temporary Wi-Fi connection The iPad is new, reset or has not completed setup Camera photos and videos, photo albums, files and folders, plus other categories Apple lists in the setup assistant None beyond the two devices
Move to iOS with a direct cable The iPad is in setup and both models support a compatible wired connection The same Move to iOS categories, with the cable providing the connection A compatible USB-C data cable; connector support varies by Galaxy and iPad model
Computer-assisted manual copy The iPad is already set up and you do not want to erase it Photos and videos that you copy from the Galaxy, commonly from DCIM A Mac or PC, plus the appropriate Apple syncing software
Cloud-storage app Your photos are already uploaded to a supported cloud account Cloud-stored files available through that service; this is not automatically a complete camera-roll migration Internet access and the service’s iPad app

Apple’s support pages dated June 3, 2026 and May 6, 2026 describe the first three routes. Samsung’s Smart Switch documentation, accessed October 13, 2026, specifically excludes iOS as a destination.

Prepare both devices before transferring

Confirm the iPad has enough room

On the iPad, open Settings > General > iPad Storage and check the available space. Compare it with the size of the photos and videos you intend to copy. Include media on a Galaxy microSD card in your calculation: Apple’s preparation guidance treats that content as part of the transfer total. If the iPad is short on space, remove unneeded downloads, transfer a smaller selection, or use a cloud account for older pictures.

Charge, connect and leave the devices alone

  • Plug both devices into power for the entire transfer.
  • Keep the Galaxy and iPad close together and do not use them for other work.
  • Temporarily pause activities that can interrupt setup, such as answering calls or switching to another Android app.
  • Have the Galaxy unlocked and know its screen-lock code.

Move to iOS creates a temporary connection between the phones. It is not the same as joining your normal home Wi-Fi network, so keep the devices in the same physical area even if your router is elsewhere.

Decide whether a cable is appropriate

A wired Move to iOS transfer can be faster, but it is not universal. Inspect the exact ports on your Galaxy and iPad and use a cable that carries data, not charging only. Apple notes that a connected Android device may display a USB prompt requiring a settings change. Do not buy a cable until you have checked the two model specifications and the connector arrangement.

Protect anything you cannot replace

Move to iOS does not replace a backup strategy. Before starting, make sure irreplaceable pictures remain on the Galaxy, a microSD card, a computer or an existing cloud account. If you plan to erase an already configured iPad, make a current iPad backup first because erasing removes its local content.

Method 1: Move photos during iPad setup

This is Apple’s guided route when the iPad has not completed setup. The transfer can include more than pictures, so review the selection screen carefully.

  1. Start iPad setup. Turn on the iPad and follow the setup screens until you reach Transfer Your Apps & Data.
  2. Choose the Android option. Tap From Android. The iPad displays instructions and a temporary numeric code.
  3. Install or open Move to iOS on the Galaxy. Get Apple’s Move to iOS app from the Galaxy’s app store if it is not already installed, then open it and accept the prompts.
  4. Enter the code. Type the code shown on the iPad into the Galaxy. The Android phone then joins the temporary Wi-Fi network created for the transfer.
  5. Wait for the transfer screen. When the content list appears, select Photos and Videos. You can select other categories that Apple presents if you want them moved at the same time.
  6. Review the amount. Confirm that the selected media can fit in the iPad’s available storage. Include pictures located on the Galaxy’s removable microSD card when estimating the total.
  7. Start and monitor the progress. Tap the command to begin on the Galaxy, then set both devices down. Keep them powered, nearby and idle.
  8. Wait for the iPad’s loading bar. The Galaxy may report that its part is complete first. Apple’s explicit instruction is to leave both devices alone “until the loading bar that appears on your iOS device has finished.” Do not disconnect or begin iPad setup’s remaining screens early.
  9. Finish setup and check Photos. Continue the iPad setup after the bar completes. Open the Photos app and look for the imported camera pictures, videos and albums.

What Move to iOS normally preserves

Apple lists camera photos and videos, photo albums, files and folders among the categories that can transfer from Android. The exact result depends on what is selected and where the Galaxy stores the content. Pictures outside the supported locations or inside an app that does not expose them as transferable files may require the manual computer route.

Optional wired Move to iOS transfer

Apple documents connecting the Android device directly to the iPad with a compatible USB-C cable as an alternative to the temporary wireless connection. Use the same setup sequence: choose From Android on the iPad, open Move to iOS on the Galaxy, enter the code and select the photos. Connect the cable when the setup prompts for it and approve any USB-access notification shown by Android.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single cable that fits every Galaxy-and-iPad combination. Some models use USB-C, while older hardware may use a different port or require an adapter. A charging cable that lacks data wiring will not perform the transfer. If the iPad or Galaxy does not recognize the connection, unplug it, unlock the Galaxy, inspect the USB notification and verify that the cable supports data before retrying over Wi-Fi.

Method 2: Transfer photos when the iPad is already set up

If you have reached the iPad Home Screen and do not want to erase it, Apple’s manual procedure uses a computer as an intermediary. The basic sequence is Galaxy to computer, then computer to iPad.

Option A: Erase the iPad and use Move to iOS

Erasing lets you return to the setup-time method, but it removes the iPad’s local data and settings. Back up anything important first. On current iPadOS versions, the erase command is under Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Erase All Content and Settings; labels can vary slightly by version. After the reset finishes, select From Android at Transfer Your Apps & Data and follow the Move to iOS steps above.

Option B: Copy through a Mac or PC

  1. Connect the Galaxy to the computer. Unlock the phone, connect its USB cable and choose the Android USB mode that permits file transfer if Android asks.
  2. Locate the camera files. Browse the Galaxy’s internal storage and, if present, its microSD card. Camera images are commonly in the DCIM folder, although screenshots, downloads and app-created media may be elsewhere.
  3. Copy the originals. Create a clearly named folder on the computer and copy the selected photos and videos into it. Wait for the copy to finish before disconnecting the Galaxy. Open several files on the computer to confirm they are readable.
  4. Disconnect the Galaxy safely. Eject it from the computer, then connect the iPad.
  5. Choose the Apple sync tool for your computer. Apple documents Finder for macOS Catalina or later, iTunes for older macOS versions, and the Apple Devices app on Windows PC.
  6. Sync the folder to the iPad. In the selected Apple tool, choose the connected iPad, open its photo-sync section, enable syncing from the folder you created and apply the changes. Keep the iPad connected until synchronization completes.
  7. Verify the result. Open Photos on the iPad and inspect recent imports, videos and a few full-resolution images. Keep the computer copy until you have confirmed everything you need.

Finder on macOS Catalina or later

Open Finder and select the iPad in the sidebar. Use the device’s photo controls to choose the computer folder containing the copied Galaxy media, select whether to sync all or selected albums or folders, then click Apply or Sync. Finder synchronization reflects the folder selected on the Mac; changing that folder later can change what remains on the iPad during a future sync.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

iTunes on older macOS

Open iTunes, select the iPad icon, go to the photo-sync settings, choose the folder that contains the Galaxy copies and apply the sync. Keep iTunes open and the cable connected until the progress indicator ends.

Apple Devices on Windows

Open Apple Devices, select the connected iPad and use its photo-sync controls to choose the folder copied from the Galaxy. Apply the settings and wait for the operation to finish before unplugging either device.

Method 3: View cloud-stored photos on the iPad

If the Galaxy has already uploaded the pictures to a cloud account, you may not need a device-to-device copy. Install that provider’s iPad app and sign in to the same account. Apple’s manual-transfer guidance names Google Drive, Dropbox and Microsoft OneDrive as examples for accessing cloud-stored documents.

This approach gives the iPad access to files that are actually in the cloud; it does not claim to migrate an entire Galaxy camera roll automatically into Apple Photos. For offline access, use the app’s download command for selected files, and check the iPad’s free space before downloading a large library. Keep the Galaxy originals until you have verified that the required images are present online.

Why Samsung Smart Switch is not the answer

Smart Switch is designed to move content from a previous device to a Galaxy phone or tablet. Samsung explicitly says it cannot transfer content to an iOS device. Installing Smart Switch on the Galaxy therefore will not create a supported direct Galaxy-to-iPad transfer path. Samsung’s lists of Smart Switch backup formats describe what the Galaxy service can handle; they are not an Apple compatibility guarantee.

Troubleshoot a stalled or failed Move to iOS transfer

The code will not connect

  • Confirm that the iPad is still on the From Android step and that you entered the current code.
  • Restart both devices and begin the pairing process again.
  • Turn off mobile data on the Galaxy before retrying so Android does not switch away from the temporary connection.
  • Forget known Wi-Fi networks on the Galaxy and disable settings or apps that automatically change Wi-Fi networks or optimize connections.

The transfer stops partway through

  • Keep both devices plugged in and close together.
  • Do not answer a call, switch apps or let the Galaxy lock while Move to iOS is working.
  • Check the iPad’s available storage against the complete selected set, including media on a microSD card.
  • Restart both devices, turn off mobile data and retry with fewer categories or a smaller photo selection if the full set repeatedly fails.

The Galaxy says it finished but the iPad is still loading

Do not disconnect at that point. Apple specifically says to wait for the loading bar on the iOS device, even when Android reports completion. Interrupting the iPad side early can leave the transfer incomplete.

Some pictures are missing

Check the original Galaxy locations, including internal storage, microSD storage, screenshots and download folders. Move to iOS covers the categories Apple lists, but media hidden inside an app or stored in an unsupported location may not appear. Copy those files to the computer route, or upload them to a cloud account and access them from the iPad app.

The cable route does not work

Verify that both ports and the cable support data, not only charging. Unlock the Galaxy and respond to its USB prompt. If the devices still do not recognize one another, use Move to iOS over its temporary Wi-Fi connection rather than assuming a new cable is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify and organize the imported library

  • Open Photos and sort by the recent-import area to find the transferred set.
  • Play several videos from beginning to end; a thumbnail alone does not prove that the file copied correctly.
  • Open images at full resolution and check a few older and newer dates.
  • Confirm that albums you expected from Move to iOS are present, and recreate any organization that came from an unsupported app.
  • Do not delete the Galaxy originals, computer copy or cloud files until the iPad library has been checked and backed up.

Which route should you use?

  • Choose Move to iOS when the iPad is new or you are willing to erase it. It is the only Apple-documented route here that can move photos and other supported categories in one setup-time operation without a computer.
  • Choose the computer workflow when the iPad is already configured and must keep its current content. It takes an extra copy step but avoids an erase.
  • Choose a direct cable only when the exact Galaxy and iPad ports are compatible and you have a verified data cable.
  • Choose a cloud app when the photos are already online or you only need occasional access rather than a local Photos-library copy.
