For a one-time copy, connect your phone to the computer with a data-capable USB cable and import the files. For ongoing access across devices, use a cloud photo library; for a few nearby files, use AirDrop or Quick Share; and for an offline copy, transfer to an external drive or SD card. The right route depends on where the originals are stored and whether you want a copy or continuing synchronization.

Choose a transfer method

Your goal Best-fit route What to check
Copy photos once from a phone to a computer USB import Use a cable that transfers data, unlock the phone, and approve any trust or USB-mode prompt.
Keep a library available across devices Cloud photo service You need an account, internet access, and enough cloud storage. iCloud Photos uses iCloud storage.
Send a few files to a nearby device AirDrop for Apple devices; Quick Share for Windows Confirm both devices support the sharing method and are nearby.
Keep an offline copy outside the phone USB drive or SD card Check connector, adapter, and file-system compatibility with every device that will use the storage.
Some photos are missing from a USB import Download originals or retrieve them through the cloud service A full-resolution original stored only in the cloud may not be available as a local file on the phone.

A transfer creates a copy; it does not prove that every original, video, or metadata item made it across. Synchronization is different: changes in a synced library can propagate between devices. Keep the source library until you have checked the destination.

Transfer photos from a phone to a Windows PC

Use Microsoft Photos with USB

Microsoft documents this import route for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Connect the phone using a data-transfer cable, turn it on, and unlock it. On Android, select File Transfer if prompted. On an iPhone or iPad, install Apple Devices from the Microsoft Store, connect the device, unlock it, and accept Trust or Allow if prompted. Then open Photos in Windows, choose Import, select the connected device, choose the photos, and select a save location. Give the PC time to detect the phone and complete the import. See Microsoft’s phone-to-PC import instructions and Apple’s transfer instructions.

If iCloud Photos is enabled on an iPhone or iPad, Apple says to download the original, full-resolution versions to the device before importing over USB to a PC. Items held only in iCloud need cloud access or a download first. Microsoft also notes that cloud-synced images can be downloaded through a browser.

Use Phone Link for recent Android photos

Microsoft says Phone Link can show and copy recent photos from Android camera and screenshot folders without a USB connection. Its documented limits are recent photos only, no videos, and Android 7.0 or newer. It is not a substitute for importing a complete photo library.

Transfer photos between nearby devices without a cable

AirDrop between Apple devices

Use AirDrop for nearby Apple devices when you want to send a small selection. Select the photos, use the share control, and choose the receiving device. Both devices need to support AirDrop and be available for nearby sharing. For a large library, a bulk transfer or cloud sync is generally more practical than sending items one by one.

Copy photos to an external drive or SD card

An external drive or SD card is useful when you want a local copy that does not depend on an internet connection. Apple documents copying from iPhone to external storage, including USB drives and SD cards; an adapter may be needed depending on the iPhone and storage connector. Copy the files through a supported app, disconnect the storage safely, then connect it to the destination device and copy them there.

Apple says iPhone models with USB-C can format an external drive as APFS, ExFAT, or MS-DOS (FAT) in Files. Formatting erases the drive, so check compatibility with the phone and every destination device before formatting. Apple’s available storage-transfer instructions are at Apple’s iPhone storage-device guide.

Fix common transfer problems

  • The computer does not detect the phone: Unlock the phone and keep it awake while the computer detects it. Accept Trust or Allow on iPhone if asked.
  • The phone charges but no files appear: Try a cable that supports data transfer and another USB port. A charging-only cable cannot transfer files.
  • Android appears but its files are inaccessible: Tap the USB notification and switch to File Transfer.
  • Windows Photos does not show the connected device: In Photos, select Import and choose the device. Allow time for detection.
  • Some iPhone photos are absent from the import: If iCloud Photos is enabled, download originals to the iPhone or access the photos through iCloud before importing over USB to a PC.
  • The destination runs out of space: Check available storage and choose a folder structure before starting. The cited transfer instructions do not establish a universal amount of free space needed.

Before deleting anything from the phone, open a sample of the copied photos and videos on the destination, confirm the expected items are present, and check that the files display correctly.

Use a copy as a backup, not as proof of a complete move

For an independent offline backup, copy the photos to a computer or external drive and verify the files before removing the originals. If you also use cloud synchronization, understand whether deleting an item on one device will remove it from the synced library. A second copy on a separate storage device provides another recovery option if the phone or primary destination is lost or damaged.
