Use Samsung Smart Switch when you need a recoverable Galaxy backup; use OpenMTP when you need to copy selected music files or folders. Smart Switch saves a backup on your Mac and restores supported data to a Galaxy device. OpenMTP presents the unlocked Samsung phone’s storage so you can drag individual tracks between the phone and Mac. A data-capable USB cable, the correct USB mode, and an unlocked phone are essential for the direct-copy method.
Choose the right transfer method first
The best workflow depends on whether you are protecting the contents of a phone or moving a few usable audio files.

These methods are complementary rather than interchangeable. A Smart Switch backup is useful before replacing or resetting a phone, but it does not give you the same selective folder workflow as an MTP file browser. OpenMTP is convenient for a handful of tracks, yet it is not the documented whole-device backup and restore system.

Smart Switch requirements
- Samsung’s US support requirements list macOS 10.9 or later for the computer.
- Android 4.3 or later is listed for general transfers.
- Encrypted data requires Android 7.0 or later according to Samsung’s compatibility notes.
- Install Smart Switch on both the Mac and the Galaxy phone or tablet for the documented backup-and-restore workflow.
Labels and prompts can vary by Galaxy model, Android release, macOS release, and Smart Switch version. The compatibility figures above are Samsung’s stated thresholds, not a guarantee that every feature behaves identically on every newer or older model.

Audio formats and DRM
Samsung lists MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG, M4A, AAC, and FLAC among the music formats handled in its Smart Switch information. A listed format only describes transfer support; it does not guarantee that every player app on your Mac or Galaxy device will decode every file, codec, bitrate, or metadata combination.
Rights restrictions need separate attention. Samsung’s Smart Switch support page states: “Only music and video files purchased from iTunes after 2009 can be transferred.” Samsung describes older purchases as not DRM-free and therefore not transferable through that Smart Switch path. This is a Smart Switch support limitation for the stated purchase category, not a blanket rule for every personally owned audio file or every MTP copy. Do not attempt to remove DRM; instead use an authorized download or a DRM-free copy supplied by the service that sold the music.
Use a cable that carries data
OpenMTP’s connection instructions warn that some cables only charge. Check the cable you already own before buying another one, and match its connectors to the ports on your Galaxy device and Mac. A charge-only cable can make the phone appear completely absent even though its battery is charging.
Method 1: Back up and restore with Samsung Smart Switch
Choose this route when your priority is a Mac backup of supported Galaxy data, with the option to restore that backup to a Galaxy phone later. Samsung documents music as one of the Android data categories, but the desktop instructions focus on backup and restore rather than opening a Mac-side folder view of your tracks.

Step 1: Install Smart Switch and connect the Galaxy device
- Install Smart Switch on the Mac and on the Samsung phone or tablet.
- Connect the Galaxy device to the Mac with a USB cable.
- Unlock the device. If the phone asks whether to allow access to phone data, tap Allow.
- Open Smart Switch on the Mac and wait for the connected device to be identified.
If the device is not identified, keep it unlocked while reconnecting and respond to any access prompt immediately. A successful connection is required before the Backup control becomes useful.
Step 2: Create the Mac backup
- In Smart Switch on the Mac, select Backup.
- Review the categories and select or deselect items as needed. Leave the music category selected if music is part of the backup you need.
- Start the backup and keep the phone connected until Smart Switch reports completion.
Samsung says the default Mac location for a Smart Switch backup is /Users/[username]/Documents/Samsung/SmartSwitch/backup. The [username] portion represents your macOS account name; it is not a literal folder name. Protect this folder like any other backup, and make sure the Mac has enough free storage for the selected categories.
Step 3: Restore supported data to a Galaxy phone
- Open Smart Switch on the Mac and connect the Galaxy phone that will receive the data.
- Choose Restore.
- Select the relevant backup and, if Smart Switch offers category controls, choose the data to restore.
- Select Restore now and leave the phone connected until the operation finishes.
Restore is designed for supported data going back to a Galaxy device. It is not a documented way to export a neatly organized music library from the backup folder into arbitrary Mac music software. If your goal is to pick one album and place it in a particular phone folder, use the direct MTP procedure instead.
What Smart Switch can and cannot tell you
- It can: create a computer backup, include listed Android categories such as music, and restore supported data to a Galaxy phone.
- It does not document: a general-purpose Mac browser for opening, sorting, and dragging every backed-up song as ordinary files.
- It may not transfer: content restricted by the rights and purchase limitations described on Samsung’s support page.
Method 2: Copy selected music with OpenMTP
Use OpenMTP when you want direct control over individual tracks or folders. The Samsung-specific instructions from OpenMTP describe a two-pane interface: Mac files in one pane and the MTP device in the other. This is a third-party workflow, not Samsung’s official backup-and-restore utility.

Step 1: Install OpenMTP
- Download OpenMTP from its developer and move the application to the Mac’s Applications folder.
- Launch OpenMTP after installation.
macOS security prompts can vary by release. If macOS asks you to confirm that you want to open a newly downloaded application, use the system’s displayed confirmation controls only if you obtained the installer from the developer’s legitimate distribution page.
Step 2: Put the phone in file-transfer mode
- Connect the Samsung device with a USB cable that supports data, not charging only.
- Unlock the phone.
- If Android asks whether to allow access to phone data, tap Allow.
- If a USB notification appears, tap it and choose Transferring files.
The exact notification wording can differ by Android version. The important state is file transfer (MTP), not charging, photo transfer, or USB tethering.
Step 3: Copy files in the two-pane window
- In OpenMTP, locate the source files or folders in the Mac pane.
- In the device pane, open the destination folder on the Galaxy storage. Create or use a music folder that your player can scan.
- Copy the selected tracks or folders between panes.
- Wait for the transfer to finish before disconnecting the cable, then eject or safely disconnect the device as offered by the application or macOS.
For music going from the phone to the Mac, reverse the direction: select the tracks in the MTP pane and copy them into a Mac folder. Keep the phone awake during a large transfer when possible, and do not unplug it while a progress indicator is active.

Common OpenMTP connection failure
OpenMTP’s Samsung instructions note that Smart Switch can block other applications from reaching the phone over MTP. If OpenMTP shows a blank device pane or cannot detect the Galaxy device, quit Smart Switch completely, unplug and reconnect the phone, unlock it, and repeat the USB-mode and access steps. This conflict is specific to MTP access; it does not mean the phone’s music files are damaged.

How to move music in each direction
Samsung phone or tablet to Mac
For a few songs, use OpenMTP: connect, unlock, approve data access, select Transferring files, then copy from the device pane to a Mac folder. For a broader safety copy before a device change, use Smart Switch Backup. The former gives you ordinary files you can organize immediately; the latter gives you a Samsung backup intended for later restoration.
Mac to Samsung phone or tablet
Use OpenMTP to select music on the Mac and copy it into the Galaxy’s music folder or another folder your chosen player indexes. If you are setting up a replacement Galaxy and want supported data restored as a group, create or use a Smart Switch backup and choose Restore on the destination phone instead of manually rebuilding folders.
Moving playlists and app-specific libraries
The documented material establishes file copying and Smart Switch category backup, not universal conversion of playlists between Mac applications and Android player apps. Copying audio files does not automatically recreate an application’s ratings, queue, playlists, or streaming-service downloads. Treat those as app-specific data and verify the receiving player’s own import or synchronization features.

Nothing happens when you plug it in
- Unlock the Galaxy device before opening the transfer application.
- Look for the phone-data permission prompt and tap Allow.
- Replace a suspected charge-only cable with a known data-capable cable.
- Disconnect and reconnect directly to the Mac rather than through an unreliable adapter or hub.
- Check the USB notification and select Transferring files.
OpenMTP opens but the device pane is empty
- Quit Smart Switch and any other application that may be using MTP.
- Unplug the phone.
- Unlock it and reconnect with the data cable.
- Tap Allow if prompted, then choose Transferring files.
- Reopen or refresh OpenMTP and wait for the device pane to populate.
The copy starts but fails or stops
- Keep the phone unlocked and connected until the transfer completes.
- Retry with a smaller group of files to identify a problematic file or folder.
- Confirm that the Mac destination has sufficient free space.
- Do not rename or move source files while they are being copied.
- After a failed attempt, check the destination for partial files before starting again.
The file copied, but the music app cannot play it
Verify the extension and codec, not just the filename. Samsung’s listed formats include MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG, M4A, AAC, and FLAC, but player compatibility varies. A file can transfer successfully and still require a player that supports its particular encoding. Also check whether the original content is DRM-protected; copying a protected file does not make it playable elsewhere.

Smart Switch backup or restore does not include a song
Check that the relevant category was selected for Backup and that the song falls within the supported data scope. Samsung’s iTunes purchase-era restriction applies to the music and video files described on its Smart Switch support page. For ordinary, DRM-free files that you need to inspect individually, use OpenMTP so you can confirm the source folder and destination yourself.

If you need both outcomes, use both methods: make a Smart Switch backup for recovery, then use OpenMTP for a plainly visible copy of the albums or folders you want to keep on the Mac.
A reliable transfer checklist
- Decide whether you need a restorable backup or selected files.
- Check the Mac and Android versions against Samsung’s stated Smart Switch requirements when using Smart Switch.
- Confirm that the cable supports data.
- Unlock the Galaxy device before connecting.
- Approve the phone-data access prompt.
- Choose Transferring files for an OpenMTP copy.
- Quit Smart Switch before using OpenMTP if the device is blank or undetected.
- Check format and DRM status before troubleshooting a playback failure.
- Wait for the transfer or backup to finish before disconnecting.
- Open a few copied files on the destination to verify that the transfer produced usable audio.
What to expect after the transfer
Files copied with OpenMTP remain ordinary files in the destination folder, so you can rename, organize, archive, or import them using software that supports their formats. A Smart Switch backup remains a Samsung backup set in the default Documents location and is meant to be consumed by Smart Switch during restore. Keeping those two outcomes separate prevents a common mistake: expecting a backup archive to behave like a browsable folder of songs.

Because menu labels and USB behavior can change with Galaxy models, Android versions, macOS releases, and application updates, use the labels shown on your own screen when they differ slightly. The core requirements remain the same for the documented direct-copy flow: a data-capable connection, an unlocked phone, permission to access phone data, and the file-transfer USB mode.
