For a direct one-time transfer on Windows 10 or later, connect the iPad by cable and use Apple Devices File Sharing. Choose an app that supports both File Sharing and the file type, then add the files to that app. For files you want to browse in different places, use iCloud Drive, another cloud provider, an external drive, or a network share instead.
Choose the transfer method that fits your files
| Method | Best for | Where files appear | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Devices File Sharing | A direct, deliberate transfer | Inside the selected iPad app | Windows 10 or later, a compatible app, and initially a cable |
| Apple Devices over Wi-Fi | Convenience after setup | Inside the selected iPad app | Initial cable setup and both devices on the same Wi-Fi network |
| iCloud Drive | Access and updates across devices | Files app’s iCloud Drive location | iCloud access on the PC and iPad, with an internet connection for cloud access |
| Third-party cloud storage | Using a cloud service you already have | Files app’s provider location, when configured | A provider account; its app or setup may be needed |
| External drive or SD card | Offline transfer without cloud upload | Browseable in Files or a compatible app | A compatible drive/card and possibly an iPad adapter |
| PC file share | Accessing files on an existing local network | In Files through the connected server | A configured, reachable shared folder and any required login |
| iTunes File Sharing | Older Windows setups or an existing iTunes workflow | Inside the selected iPad app | A compatible app and a cable; Apple directs Windows 10 or later users to Apple Devices |
1. Transfer files with Apple Devices over USB
Apple Devices is Apple’s current documented File Sharing workflow for Windows 10 or later. The receiving app must support File Sharing and the particular file type. These files are app-specific: Apple says they cannot be accessed from other apps or locations on the iPad.
- Install and open the current Apple Devices app on the PC. Connect the iPad with a USB or USB-C cable and unlock it. If the iPad asks whether to trust the computer, follow the prompt.
- In Apple Devices, select the iPad, then choose Files.
- Select an app in the File Sharing list. If there is no Files section, Apple says the device has no file-sharing apps.
- Add or drag compatible files into the selected app. Open them in that app on the iPad.
- Eject the iPad in Apple Devices before disconnecting it.
Before deleting the receiving app, copy any files you need to keep somewhere else. Apple says deleting that app also deletes its shared files from the device and from the Apple Devices backup.
2. Use Apple Devices over Wi-Fi after setup
Apple documents a Wi-Fi connection option, but its Wi-Fi syncing setup begins with a cable. Connect the iPad to the PC once, then select the device in Apple Devices and open General. Turn on Show this [device] when on Wi-Fi and select Apply. The PC and iPad must be on the same Wi-Fi network. Treat this as a setup-dependent convenience, not a guaranteed cable-free first transfer.

3. Transfer through iCloud Drive
Choose iCloud Drive when you want files available through iCloud across your Apple and Windows devices. Put the file in iCloud Drive on the PC, then open the Files app on the iPad and select iCloud Drive. Apple describes iCloud as keeping content updated across Windows and Apple devices as it changes.
A file visible in iCloud Drive is not necessarily stored locally for offline use. On the iPad, use Keep Downloaded where that option is available if you need a local copy.

4. Use a third-party cloud provider
If you already use a supported cloud provider, upload the file from the PC through that service. On iPad, open Files, tap the sidebar, and look under Locations for the provider. The provider may require its app or additional setup. Apple lists Box and Dropbox as examples; provider subscriptions may incur fees.
5. Move files with an external drive or SD card
An external drive or card is an offline intermediary: copy files from the PC onto it, disconnect it, then connect it to the iPad. In Files or another compatible app, browse the drive and copy the files into the desired destination. The iPad’s port may require an adapter. Check drive and file-system compatibility for your specific iPad and storage device.

Apple documents that USB-C iPad models can use Files to format an external drive as APFS, ExFAT, or MS-DOS (FAT). This formatting capability should not be assumed for every iPad model.
6. Connect to a PC file share on your network
This works when the PC already has a shared folder configured and is reachable on the local network. Apple’s instructions cover connecting from iPad; they do not provide the Windows-side steps for setting up the share.

7. Use iTunes File Sharing for a legacy setup
Apple still documents iTunes File Sharing: connect the iPad, open its device view and File Sharing, select a compatible app, then add files for that app to open. Apple’s newer guidance directs Windows 10 or later users to Apple Devices, so use iTunes mainly if you have an older Windows configuration or an iTunes setup that already works.

Fix common transfer problems
- The iPad does not appear: check the cable and connection, unlock the iPad, and respond to any trust prompt. Apple’s transfer guide links to device-visibility troubleshooting for further diagnosis.
- There is no Files section in Apple Devices: install an iPad app that supports File Sharing, then reconnect and check again.
- A transferred file will not open: confirm that the selected app supports that file type. File Sharing does not make the file available to other iPad apps automatically.
- An external drive is missing: check that it is connected securely, that the connector or adapter is suitable, and that the drive’s format works with the iPad. Apple’s documented USB-C formatting options do not establish compatibility for every drive and iPad combination.
- You plan to remove an app used for File Sharing: first copy its shared files to the PC or another location you control; removing the app removes those shared files and their Apple Devices backup copy.
