Your training script is only one part of a run’s execution context. Python and package versions, custom preprocessing code, the dataset, the source revision, and run settings can all affect whether the work can be repeated or moved to another machine. A package manifest records only part of that picture; a useful record also connects the environment to the code, data, settings, and outputs used in a particular run.
What dependencies can be missing from the code?
A script shows the code it calls directly, but not necessarily everything the run needs to execute the same way elsewhere. Consider these parts of the context separately:
- Runtime: the Python version and the tools used to build or install the environment.
- Packages: the libraries imported directly and the transitive packages they rely on. Optional extras may also be required.
- Project code: custom modules, preprocessing steps, and the source revision that was run.
- Inputs and settings: dataset identity or version, parameters, and other run configuration.
- Outputs: model weights and other artifacts produced by the run, alongside its metrics.
These are related but not interchangeable records. A dependency file describes how to assemble a runtime environment; it does not, by itself, identify the exact code revision, data, settings, or outputs associated with a training event.
What MLflow records—and what its model environment files describe
MLflow documents two complementary mechanisms. MLflow Tracking can record a run’s code version, parameters, metrics, artifacts, and dataset associations. Its run record can include metadata such as parameters, metrics, and times, as well as artifacts such as model weights and images. A dataset association helps connect a training event to its input data; it is not a substitute for clearly identifying or retaining the dataset version.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a logged model, MLflow documents environment files that describe its runtime dependencies:
python_env.yamlcan specify the Python version and build tools.requirements.txtdefines pip dependencies.conda.yamlis included optionally.
These model environment files complement the experiment record; they do not establish that every custom code module or data input has been captured. MLflow Tracking stores data locally by default. Remote tracking and artifact storage are available options when runs need to be shared.

Why inferred package lists can still be incomplete
MLflow can infer dependencies, but its documentation warns that inference may miss requirements, including extras for some libraries. As a result, a generated requirements file should be treated as a starting point to verify, not proof that a model will run in every target environment.

MLflow’s dependency guidance also describes a locking option that records direct and transitive dependencies at exact versions. The documentation says this option has been available since MLflow 2.16.0 and uses uv when it is installed. If uv is unavailable, MLflow skips the locking step and uses ordinary dependency inference. Locking can make the requirements file larger and the environment more rigid, so the extra precision has a maintenance cost.

Build a run record that can travel with the work
- Inventory the environment. Record the Python version, direct packages, and transitive package versions where possible. Include optional extras and the tools needed to build or install the environment.
- Identify the code. Record the source revision and account for custom modules and preprocessing code—not just the entry-point training script.
- Identify the inputs. Record dataset identity or version and associate it with the training event. Note the run parameters and relevant configuration.
- Retain the outputs. Keep the model and other artifacts with the run’s metrics and metadata so the recorded result can be traced to its context.
- Choose the right environment detail. For an MLflow model, inspect its
python_env.yamlandrequirements.txt, plusconda.yamlif present. Consider dependency locking when exact transitive versions matter anduvis available. - Validate where the model will run. Test the recorded environment in a sandbox or virtual environment. For serving, MLflow also documents Docker-based prediction checks. A virtual environment alone may not expose operating-system-specific issues, so test in a context that resembles the intended target.
Choose capture depth with reproducibility and maintenance in mind
The right level of detail depends on what must be repeated and where. A direct-dependency list is easier to maintain but may omit transitive versions or extras; exact locking captures more version detail but can enlarge the file and constrain later changes. A model environment file helps describe runtime packages, while a tracking record connects code, data, settings, metrics, and artifacts. Neither should be mistaken for a universal capture mechanism: MLflow’s documentation describes specific behaviors, not a guarantee that every dependency in every training stack is recorded automatically.
MLflow identifies dependency problems as a common deployment issue in its documentation. The practical response is to treat reproducibility as a run-level record plus a validated environment—not as a property of the script alone.
