Traffic surge protection is a set of measures that helps keep a website or online service available when requests rise sharply. It combines edge caching, traffic filtering, load balancing and capacity scaling. The same layers can help with a legitimate rush of visitors and with malicious traffic, but a spike alone does not prove an attack.
What traffic surge protection means
“Traffic surge protection” is an umbrella term, not one standardized product or control. It describes an architecture for handling sudden increases in requests while preserving service for legitimate users. Causes range from a popular launch or news event to a denial-of-service attack. AWS describes a DoS attack as an attempt to affect availability for legitimate end users; a DDoS attack uses multiple sources. AWS explains DoS and DDoS attacks.
Surge management plans for demand and capacity. DDoS mitigation detects and filters harmful traffic. They overlap at layers such as a CDN, load balancer and web application firewall (WAF), but they are not interchangeable: adding application capacity alone does not filter a volumetric flood.
How the protection layers work
CDN caching reduces origin load
A content delivery network (CDN) can serve cacheable files and responses from edge locations near users, instead of sending every request to the origin server. AWS describes CloudFront caching and request collapsing as ways to reduce the number of requests reaching an origin during high traffic. Dynamic or uncached paths need other controls, such as scoped WAF rate rules. AWS CloudFront DDoS resiliency guidance.

Filtering handles requests that should not pass through
DDoS mitigation systems can analyze network packet fields, HTTP request metadata and origin response metrics. Depending on the traffic and attack type, mitigation may drop, rate-limit or challenge requests. Cloudflare describes how DDoS protection works and its DDoS protection documentation.
WAF rules and rate limits provide application-level controls for paths and behaviors that need closer scrutiny. Set limits around real endpoint behavior: a broad or overly strict threshold can block legitimate visitors or API clients. There is no universal request threshold that is safe for every site.

Load balancing and scaling address capacity
A load balancer distributes requests among healthy resources. Autoscaling can add compute capacity as demand rises. These measures help with legitimate load, but they are not unlimited: application code, databases, queues and third-party dependencies must also tolerate the traffic. AWS recommends load balancing and scaling resources as part of protection against larger volumes. AWS Shield guidance on mitigating events.
Keep direct access to the origin restricted
If attackers or clients can reach the origin directly, they may bypass protections configured at the CDN or load balancer. AWS recommends placing computation resources behind those services and restricting direct internet access to infrastructure such as databases. AWS DDoS protection guidance.

How to tell whether a spike may be an attack
A slowdown or outage, an unexpected increase in requests or bandwidth, and unusual-looking origin requests are possible warning signs—not proof of an attack. Compare the event with the service’s normal baseline and check both edge analytics and origin logs. Cloudflare’s guidance lists these indicators and recommends investigating the traffic pattern. During an active incident, check whether the origin remains healthy and whether it is exposed directly to the internet. Review edge or CDN analytics, then use provider-supported controls such as endpoint-specific rate limits or challenges where appropriate. A challenge can inconvenience real users, so apply it to the traffic or paths that warrant it rather than treating every surge as hostile. For account-specific controls and incident procedures, follow the provider’s current official guidance.

What to compare when choosing an approach

What a sound setup needs to get right
- Cache content that is safe and useful to serve from the edge, and decide how dynamic paths will be protected.
- Scope rate limits and WAF rules to endpoint behavior instead of applying a single blunt threshold everywhere.
- Distribute demand across healthy resources and account for dependencies such as databases and queues when planning capacity.
- Restrict direct origin access so edge controls cannot be bypassed.
- Use baselines and logs to distinguish unusual demand from suspicious patterns, and consider the effect of challenges on legitimate users.
