Choose Traefik when you want routes to follow infrastructure resources such as Docker containers or Kubernetes objects. Choose Caddy when you prefer to define a direct reverse-proxy configuration in a Caddyfile or JSON and want automatic HTTPS built into the workflow. Both can proxy traffic; the practical difference is how you configure and operate them.
How do Traefik and Caddy differ?
Traefik is organized around providers that discover services and routing configuration from platforms such as Docker and Kubernetes. This can make sense when you want routes to track deployed resources rather than maintain a separate proxy configuration. Its Docker provider supports container labels for defining routing, and its documentation covers Kubernetes Ingress, CRD, and Gateway API providers. Caddy is often configured directly with a Caddyfile, although JSON is its native configuration language. Its reverse-proxy directive supports controls for load balancing, health checks, request handling, and upstream transports. Caddy also provides an API and supports dynamic configuration. Docker Compose with label-defined routes
Start with Traefik if you want container labels to describe routes and services. Its Docker provider is designed to read that deployment information. Include Docker socket access and exposure policy in your security design: Traefik’s quick-start mounts the socket and enables an insecure dashboard for development, which should not be exposed as a production dashboard. Caddy also runs in containers. Its container guidance recommends persisting /data and /config. When the backend is another container, use that service’s name as the upstream address; localhost inside the Caddy container refers to Caddy’s own container, not the backend. One host and a straightforward public reverse proxy
Start with Caddy if a concise command or Caddyfile suits your setup. Automatic HTTPS is designed to obtain and renew certificates and redirect HTTP to HTTPS when activated. As Caddy’s official documentation puts it: “Automatic HTTPS provisions TLS certificates for all your sites and keeps them renewed. It also redirects HTTP to HTTPS for you!”
That automation still depends on a correctly configured, reachable site. For public certificates, use a hostname present in the configuration, point its DNS records to the host, allow the necessary network traffic to reach Caddy, and keep its data storage writable and persistent. If those conditions are not met, certificate issuance or renewal can fail.

Traefik documents providers for Kubernetes Ingress, its custom resources, and Gateway API, as well as a Helm-based setup. Those docs make Traefik a natural candidate when you want proxy routing attached to Kubernetes resources. Before deploying, verify that the provider, API resources, chart values, and TLS approach match the versions and requirements of your cluster. The documentation cited here does not establish a complete feature-by-feature comparison with Caddy’s Kubernetes options, so validate those needs against the current project documentation rather than assuming equivalence. More involved proxy behavior
Check the specific proxy features your application needs rather than choosing on a broad feature claim. Caddy’s reverse_proxy directive documents load balancing, health checks, request manipulation, and transport options. For dynamic upstreams, note a documented limitation: active health checks do not run for them. Traefik attaches routing and service behavior through its providers and routing configuration, so confirm that the configuration model fits how your services are managed. What should you check before enabling HTTPS?
Neither proxy can compensate for incorrect DNS, blocked ports, or an unreachable host. Before expecting a publicly trusted certificate, check the hostname, DNS records, firewall or port-forwarding rules, and the challenge method supported by your deployment. Caddy’s automatic HTTPS documentation describes the hostname, DNS, ports, and persistent storage prerequisites. Traefik’s Kubernetes guide documents HTTP-01 and DNS-01 validation constraints; select a challenge method that works with your network and DNS provider. For internal or local names, Caddy can use its local certificate authority. Devices and applications connecting to those sites must trust that CA to avoid certificate warnings or errors; this is different from obtaining a publicly trusted certificate. Caddy automatic HTTPS documentation
A practical decision checklist
- Choose Traefik as a starting point if you want Docker labels or Kubernetes resources to drive route discovery and configuration.
- Choose Caddy as a starting point if you would rather maintain a direct Caddyfile or JSON configuration and value its automatic HTTPS workflow.
- For either one, map your DNS, ingress ports, firewall rules, certificate challenge, and persistent storage before relying on public HTTPS.
- For production, review dashboard exposure and container permissions, and check the current documentation for the specific release you plan to deploy.
Documentation checked for this comparison on October 7, 2026 includes Traefik v3.7 references; provider features and syntax may change. The Caddy documentation pages cited do not state an explicit release version in the material consulted, so confirm current release-specific requirements before copying configuration into production.
