A trading platform is usually the broader software environment for market data, analysis, and trading. A trading terminal usually refers to the trader-facing application or interface used to access those tools. The terms overlap, however, and providers do not use them consistently.
What is the difference between a trading platform and a trading terminal?
In common usage, a trading platform describes the overall set of trading software and services: it may include market information, charts and analysis tools, order entry, account functions, and desktop, web, or mobile access. A trading terminal often means the client-side application or interface through which a trader uses some or all of those capabilities.
These are useful distinctions, not universal definitions. MetaTrader 5 calls its wider toolset a “Trading Platform,” while MetaTrader 4 calls its user-facing software the “Client Terminal.” Other providers and contracts may apply the terms differently. What does a trading terminal do?
A terminal is often the software a trader opens to view prices, analyze markets, enter orders, and manage positions. MetaTrader 4’s official help describes its client software this way: “Client Terminal is a part of the online trading system.” The guide says it can receive quotes and news, support trading and position management, provide analysis tools, and allow users to write and test automated strategies.

“Terminal” does not necessarily mean a dedicated physical device. In this usage it can be ordinary software installed on a computer, or an interface accessed through a browser. MetaTrader 5, for example, documents a web terminal that can be used on internet-connected devices without installing its desktop software. Its connection guide describes web access, including demo use and broker-specific live access.
What does a trading platform include?
A platform can mean the broader environment around the terminal: the tools for trading, technical or fundamental analysis, automated trading, and access from different device types. Depending on the product, it may connect to a broker or an external trading system. MetaTrader 5’s platform documentation describes a range of these functions.

The platform software is not necessarily the broker or the exchange. In the usual arrangement, a trader uses software to send an order to a broker, which handles execution or routes it onward. MetaTrader’s explanation of basic trading operations distinguishes the software from the broker or external system that receives orders. The exact arrangement depends on the product and account.

How to compare platforms and terminals
Labels alone do not tell you what an offering can do. Compare the specific product and broker configuration against the tasks and markets you need:

- Market and broker access: Confirm which broker or trading system the software can connect to and whether the relevant account is supported.
- Instruments: Check that the instruments you want to trade are available through that broker and account.
- Orders and execution: Verify available order types and execution modes rather than assuming they are identical across providers.
- Analysis: Review the charting, technical analysis, and fundamental information tools included.
- Automation: If you use automated strategies, check whether the software supports them and whether it includes testing tools.
- Access: Confirm desktop, mobile, or browser availability and any device or installation requirements.
- Account and order management: Check how the interface displays open positions and lets you manage orders and account activity.
Feature availability can vary by software product, broker, account, and device. For example, MetaTrader 5’s web connection guide distinguishes demo access from live access tied to a broker; check the provider’s current instructions for the specific account you intend to use.

Use platform when you mean the wider trading software environment, and terminal when you mean the application or interface a trader uses. If you are choosing software, signing into an account, or reading a contract, rely on the provider’s own description and verify the actual capabilities and connections. The words themselves do not guarantee particular markets, order functions, analysis tools, or device support.
