There is no single reconciled estimate of the global trading card game (TCG) market. Two commercial research providers put its 2025 size far apart: Global Market Insights (GMI) estimates USD 8.4 billion, while Grand View Research (GVR) estimates USD 18.5 billion. Both forecast growth, but their figures should be read as separate estimates—not averaged or joined into one market series.

How large is the trading card game market?

The answer depends on which provider’s market definition and estimate you use. GMI puts the global market at USD 8.4 billion in 2025; GVR puts it at USD 18.5 billion for the same year. The difference is too large to treat either as a universally accepted total.

Provider 2025 estimate 2026 estimate Forecast and period Reported CAGR
Global Market Insights USD 8.4 billion USD 9.2 billion USD 16.9 billion in 2035 6.9% for 2026–2035
Grand View Research USD 18.5 billion USD 19.7 billion USD 32.1 billion in 2033 7.2% for 2026–2033

These are each provider’s commercial estimates and forecasts, not audited industry accounts. The public report material available from GMI and GVR does not give enough comparable methodological detail to reconcile their market definitions or explain the gap. Use each figure with its publisher and period attached; do not average the estimates or use one provider’s base with the other’s forecast.

What is the TCG market forecast through 2035?

Global Market Insights: a 2035 endpoint

GMI estimates a USD 9.2 billion market in 2026 and forecasts USD 16.9 billion by 2035. Its stated CAGR is 6.9% for 2026–2035. This is the estimate that directly reaches the 2035 endpoint in the title’s period.

Grand View Research: a separate forecast ending in 2033

GVR estimates USD 19.7 billion in 2026 and forecasts USD 32.1 billion by 2033, with a stated 7.2% CAGR for 2026–2033. That is a different provider’s estimate and a shorter forecast horizon; it is not a 2035 figure.

Both outlooks point to growth, but they do not establish one definitive market value or a precise consensus growth rate. Treat the forecasts as directional commercial estimates rather than guaranteed outcomes.

What does GVR’s market segmentation show?

GVR’s 2025 breakdown illustrates how much the result depends on the categories included in a provider’s estimate. These shares belong to GVR’s defined market and should not be treated as industry-wide figures independently verified across providers.

GVR 2025 segment Share of its reported global market
Secondary market 53.6%
Physical format 82.0%
Pokémon TCG franchise 36.0%
North America 38.9%

The categories describe different cuts of the market: secondary versus primary sales, physical versus digital formats, franchise, and geography. They are not parts of one mutually exclusive list, so their shares should not be added together.

Rank #3

What trends are shaping the market?

Collecting and competitive play

GVR identifies interest in collectible hobbies, competitive gameplay, and entertainment franchises as factors supporting demand. It also points to tournaments, local game stores, and online communities as contributors to physical and competitive play. These are the provider’s explanations of market drivers, not independently measured causal effects.

Physical products and organized play

Physical cards remain central in GVR’s estimate: it assigns physical formats 82.0% of its 2025 market. Organized play provides another view of the ecosystem. The Pokémon Company says its game uses 60-card decks for strategic battles; as of May 2026, it reported nearly 1,800 Pokémon Card Gyms and roughly 300,000 events per year in Japan. Those figures describe Japan’s Pokémon organized-play network, not all games or the global TCG market.

In a May 26, 2026 notice, Pokémon Support said high demand was affecting the availability of certain Pokémon TCG products and that it was working to print more of the impacted products. This is a dated statement about certain products, not a claim about current stock across retailers or regions.

Post-pandemic tabletop growth

Asmodee’s 2025 prospectus cites a market study that puts the broader tabletop market—which includes board games as well as TCGs—at EUR 8.2 billion in 2019, EUR 11.5 billion in 2021, and EUR 12.7 billion in 2023. The study reports 5% CAGR from 2021 to 2023 and attributes post-2021 growth to successful high-quality releases, mainly in TCG. Its chart forecasts 4% annual growth for the broader tabletop category in 2023–2028, with TCG and board games each expected to grow at 4%. Because this is a broader category with different coverage, its totals are not directly comparable with TCG-only estimates from GMI or GVR.

What company results say—and what they do not

Company filings offer evidence about an individual publisher’s performance, not the size or growth rate of the whole TCG industry. Hasbro’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, filed February 25, 2026, reports USD 2,186.9 million in revenue for its Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming segment, up 44.7% year over year from USD 1,511.3 million in 2024.

Within that reporting, Hasbro’s Tabletop Gaming revenue was USD 1,686.6 million in fiscal 2025, up 62.2% from USD 1,039.6 million in 2024. Hasbro attributed the increase primarily to strong Magic: The Gathering demand, including Universes Beyond releases and backlist titles. The segment figures include company-specific reporting categories and cannot be used as a proxy for total TCG market growth.

Why do market estimates differ?

  • Market definitions may not match. A report’s total can depend on what it counts as a TCG, which sales channels it includes, and whether it accounts for primary and secondary sales. The public information cited here does not establish a common definition across GMI and GVR.
  • Forecast periods differ. GMI publishes a 2026–2035 outlook; GVR’s cited forecast ends in 2033. Their endpoints are not interchangeable.
  • Segment coverage differs. GVR publishes franchise, format, market-channel, and regional shares. That does not show that GMI uses the same segment definitions.
  • Regional rankings are provider-specific. GVR identifies North America as the largest region in 2025 and Asia Pacific as the fastest-growing through 2033. GMI identifies Asia Pacific as the largest and Latin America as the fastest-growing. These are not a settled shared ranking.

For a market-size estimate, cite the provider and its period. For a claim about a named company, use that company’s filing. For a claim about a specific product or organized-play program, use the publisher’s or game owner’s own information. These sources answer different questions.

How to read the market outlook

  • For a 2035 forecast, GMI’s USD 16.9 billion estimate is the cited endpoint; keep its 6.9% CAGR attached to the 2026–2035 period.
  • For GVR’s segmentation, state that the shares are its 2025 estimates rather than universal industry measurements.
  • Use the EUR 12.7 billion tabletop figure only with its broader category label; it includes board games and is not a TCG-only total.
  • Do not infer whole-industry growth from Hasbro’s segment results or from one franchise’s reported share.
