Government bonds can benefit from that repositioning, particularly when traders also expect slower growth or lower policy rates. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions: when demand pushes existing bond prices higher, their yields fall; when prices decline, yields rise. On October 15, yields slumped across the Treasury curve as prices rallied. That leaves two separate questions for a bond investor: whether the issuer is likely to make the promised payment, and whether the investment will preserve purchasing power or retain its market value before maturity.
