Install traceless-style with your project’s existing package manager, connect the integration for your framework or bundler, then confirm the generated stylesheet is linked or injected. The package has no required runtime dependencies; its optional @swc/core dependency is for the SWC-backed extractor.
How do I install traceless-style?
Use the package manager already used by your project so its lockfile remains consistent. The package ships pre-built and does not run a postinstall step, according to the traceless-style Installation documentation.
npm install traceless-stylepnpm add traceless-styleyarn add traceless-style
There are no required runtime dependencies. The optional @swc/core dependency enables the SWC-backed extractor, which the documentation suggests for large codebases.

Choose the integration that matches the framework or bundler already building your project. The installation guide provides dedicated configuration for Next.js, Webpack, Vite, Rollup, and esbuild. A plain Node build script can use the CLI. Use the relevant integration page for its configuration snippet rather than combining plugin approaches.

| Project setup | Documented integration |
|---|---|
| Next.js | traceless-style/nextjs |
| Webpack | traceless-style/webpack |
| Vite | traceless-style/vite |
| Rollup | traceless-style/rollup |
| esbuild | traceless-style/esbuild |
| Plain Node build script | CLI |
The CLI’s init command also documents framework detection for Next.js, Vite, Remix, Astro, SvelteKit, Qwik, Solid, and plain HTML. See the CLI reference for its supported scaffolding behavior.
Scaffold the project configuration
For a supported project, the installation guide recommends running:
npx traceless-style init
The command detects the framework, wires the relevant entry point or configuration, adds or updates development and build scripts, creates a stylesheet stub, and runs an initial extraction. It is documented as safe to rerun. If you are scaffolding before source files exist, use npx traceless-style init --no-extract to skip that initial extraction. You can also configure an integration manually using its documentation snippet.

How do I know the CSS was generated?
-
Add a small component that imports
tlfromtraceless-styleand callstl.create, following the syntax shown in the installation guide. -
Start the project’s development server. The guide says the first request triggers a full extraction and later saves trigger incremental rebuilds.
-
Check for
public/traceless-style.cssand confirm it contains the expected rules. If you configured a differentoutCSSpath, check that location instead.
This is the verification procedure documented by the installation guide; generated output and integration behavior depend on your project configuration.
Link the stylesheet and configure the root
Next.js injects the stylesheet automatically. For other integrations, add a link to /traceless-style.css, or to the path configured as outCSS, so the browser loads the generated rules.
If you use dark mode or right-to-left (RTL) support, put <TracelessRoot /> in the root layout’s <head>. The installation documentation identifies this as the setup needed to avoid an initial flash of the light theme.

Understand linting and configuration defaults
Linting is enabled by default. During extraction, inline styles and bare class strings are rejected; the configuration reference also documents rules involving CSS modules and Tailwind. Strict lint and contrast errors can stop extraction or the framework hand-off with exit code 1, so read the diagnostic before changing a rule.
Optional settings go in the CommonJS file traceless-style.config.js. It can tune linting, automatic dark mode, RTL rewriting, and contrast checks. Keep the defaults unless a documented project requirement calls for a change. See the configuration reference.
Troubleshooting installation and builds
“Cannot find module ‘traceless-style/nextjs’”
The installation guide points to either a missing next dependency or an incorrect import path. If the project is intended to use Next.js, install Next.js as required by that project, then verify that the integration import is spelled and used as shown in the installation documentation.
Best Value
tl.merge() does not deduplicate in Webpack
The guide attributes this to missing __TRACELESS_STYLE_META__ injection. Configure Webpack with the documented withTracelessStyle() approach; adding only TracelessStyleWebpackPlugin is not the documented fix.
Extraction is slow on a large codebase
Try the optional SWC parser by setting TRACELESS_STYLE_PARSER=swc or passing --parser=swc, as documented in the CLI reference. This path uses @swc/core; it is not required for ordinary installation.
@swc/core fails to install on Alpine or musl
The installation troubleshooting guidance suggests pinning a known-good @swc/core version or staying with the legacy parser. Because SWC is optional, you can use the legacy parser instead of blocking setup on that dependency.
The page flashes the light theme
For a setup using dark mode, check that <TracelessRoot /> is present in the root layout’s <head>.
The build stops with an error
Check the lint or contrast diagnostic first. The CLI documentation says strict lint and contrast errors can return exit code 1 and stop framework hand-off; adjust configuration only after identifying the rule that failed. The configuration reference describes the available controls.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the product page claims—and what it does not establish
The product homepage advertises “0 KB” runtime CSS-in-JS, a “~30 KB” plateau bundle, “10+” frameworks, and “245” library tests. These are claims published by traceless-style in 2026, not independent benchmarks established by the installation or CLI documentation. The homepage labels v1.0.0 as the first stable release but does not show a release date. Consult the traceless-style product page for those vendor-published statements.
