A secret-scanner match in a webpack bundle is a lead to investigate—not proof that a webpack polyfill contains a live credential. The string may have been substituted into the bundle at build time, originate in application or dependency code, or appear in a source map. Trace it to its source and check whether the emitted file is exposed before deciding whether it is a real secret or a narrowly scoped false positive.
Why a scanner can find a string in a webpack bundle
A browser bundle combines code from the application and its dependencies. A scanner sees the emitted bytes; it does not automatically know whether a match came from authored code, a package, generated compatibility code, a build-time substitution, or a source map. The match alone cannot identify its origin or establish that the value grants access.
webpack’s EnvironmentPlugin is shorthand for applying DefinePlugin to selected process.env keys. The selected values can be substituted as literals in compiled output. DefinePlugin likewise creates compile-time constants. These mechanisms do not give browser code safe runtime access to the build machine’s environment: if a sensitive value is compiled into browser-targeted output, it can be inspected by people who obtain that output.

That is distinct from a polyfill. A match in code associated with a Node compatibility layer may be unrelated to the EnvironmentPlugin or DefinePlugin, and a match elsewhere in a bundle may have no connection to polyfills at all. Verify the actual source rather than inferring it from the scanner’s location or wording.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
What webpack 5 does—and does not—polyfill automatically
webpack 5 does not automatically polyfill process or Node core modules such as buffer. A project may add compatibility code through explicit configuration or dependencies; webpack’s shimming guide describes ProvidePlugin and resolve.fallback as configuration paths for these examples. Identify the package, module, and configuration that brought code into the bundle instead of assuming webpack supplied it.
This webpack 5 behavior should not be projected onto older webpack versions without checking the version actually installed in the project and its configuration.

Trace the finding before classifying it
- Preserve the exact alert. Record the affected asset, matched string or bytes, scanner context, and location. Avoid editing or suppressing the finding before you can reproduce and explain it.
- Locate the match in emitted output. Search the named chunk or asset for the exact match. If the build provides source-map or bundle-module metadata, use it to trace the location to application code, a dependency, or generated code.
- Inspect build-time substitutions. Check the project’s webpack configuration for
EnvironmentPluginandDefinePluginentries, then determine whether one could have inserted the matched value as a literal during the build. - Identify compatibility code’s origin. If the location appears to be a polyfill, find the package or module and the configuration that included it. Do not attribute the code to webpack itself without evidence.
- Assess the value and exposure. Determine whether the match is a credential, whether it enables meaningful access, and whether the bundle or any related source map is available to the public.
- Respond proportionately. If a credential has been exposed to clients, follow your organization’s credential-response process. If the match is not a usable credential, document the source and rationale for any narrowly scoped suppression.
Check source maps as well as the bundle
A source map can make a finding easier to trace, but it can also reveal code or structural information. Its behavior depends on the configured devtool mode and on what the deployment actually serves. webpack’s devtool documentation distinguishes several relevant cases:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Mode or output | Map placement or reference | What to check for exposure |
|---|---|---|
inline |
The map is embedded in the asset. | The asset itself contains the map; inspect the deployed file rather than looking only for a separate map URL. |
source-map |
A separate map file is emitted. | Check whether that file is reachable from the deployed site. |
hidden-source-map |
A separate map is emitted without a reference comment in the bundle. | The missing comment does not make the map private. webpack advises against deploying this map to the web server when it is intended for error-reporting tooling. |
nosources-source-map |
A map is emitted without source contents. | Source text is omitted, but filenames and structure can still be exposed. |
Check both the build artifact and the deployed site. A map that exists in a build directory is not necessarily public; one with no reference comment is not necessarily inaccessible. Conversely, omitting source contents does not hide every clue about included modules.

Research on JavaScript bundling describes how bundles combine module code and how source maps can expose included module names and original source. That work explains why maps can help identify a match’s origin; it does not measure secret-scanner false-positive rates or prove that webpack polyfills commonly trigger alerts. See “Jack-in-the-box: An Empirical Study of JavaScript Bundling on the Web and its Security Implications.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When is suppression justified?
Suppress only after tracing the match and assessing what it contains and where it can be obtained. The reviewed webpack documentation does not establish scanner-specific detection thresholds or a general suppression rule. Keep any exception limited to the confirmed finding and record why the value is not a usable exposed credential. If you cannot establish its origin or exposure, leave it unresolved and investigate rather than calling it a false positive.
