“Toy War” is ambiguous. This guide uses the name to mean Toy Box Wars, Iron Tuzi Gaming’s miniature-agnostic wargame. It is not the same product as Toy Battle, a two-player tile-placement board game with troop tiles and medal markers. Toy Box Wars is best understood as a rules framework for objects you already own; other games below provide more defined forces, missions or boxed components.
No single system is objectively best. Your decision depends on whether you value unrestricted model choice, a ready-to-play box, a hobby project, a known miniature count, or rules that scale from a small skirmish to a larger army. The specifications in this article are publisher descriptions on pages available on October 13, 2026, not independent balance tests or comparative play results.
What “Toy War” means in this comparison
The strongest current match for the phrase is Toy Box Wars. Its publisher says the game can use any toy, model, miniature or other object at any scale. That makes it fundamentally different from a conventional miniature game tied to a faction range or a stated model scale. You can start with action figures, science-fiction toys, historical models or household objects rather than buying a prescribed army.

You still need a consistent way to represent dimensions, abilities, armor, disadvantages and points, and your opponent must agree that the resulting profiles are fair. The official sample build demonstrates the method; it is not a playtest result.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The name can also lead shoppers toward the wrong category. Asmodee’s Toy Battle is described as a two-player tile-placement board game, not a miniature battlefield system. It is mentioned here only to prevent that naming mix-up.
Comparison at a glance
The table separates advertised specifications from assumptions that are not established. “Not stated” means the cited publisher page did not provide a directly comparable figure.
| Game | Models and scale | Advertised format and components | Collection or session scale | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toy Box Wars | Any toy, model, miniature or object at any scale, according to Iron Tuzi Gaming | Rules-centered system; homepage links to Shop, Sample Build and Sample Scenario. Current physical contents and price are not established here. | Not stated; the framework can be adapted to the collection you have | How you will convert size and abilities into points, and whether your opponent accepts the same assumptions |
| Small Wars | Any models; no proprietary models required; historical or fantasy compatible | Publisher describes an instant PDF | 10–40 miniatures | Whether a digital rules product and your existing models meet your table’s needs |
| Zone Wars | Defined boxed-game miniatures; a particular scale is not stated on the cited page | Core sets include miniatures, paper terrain, rules, cards and dice; no assembly needed | One to four players; one to two hours; ages 14+ | Current stock and exact regional box contents |
| Maelstrom’s Edge | 28mm model scale | Models require assembly and painting; terrain is part of the intended setup; V2 rulebook is a 256-page hardcover | Typically 20–30 models per side | Hobby time, tools, paints, terrain and the space required for a larger force |
| WARSURGE | Custom profiles for models or figures; no single proprietary range is required by the cited description | Publisher advertises a physical rulebook and compendium through its webstore, plus Android and iOS app support | Supports battles, skirmishes, multiplayer and solo play | Which profile-building tools and products are currently available in your region |
| War On Terra | Model-by-model ruleset; a required scale is not stated | Publisher says full rules and other required game elements are available free on its site; boxed-game status should be confirmed | One ruleset from skirmish to full-army play | Whether you want free digital rules or a currently available physical product |
The player counts, age rating and duration for Zone Wars, and the miniature counts and 28mm specification for the other named systems, are publisher-stated current-page figures rather than independent measurements. Other sources did not provide directly comparable time or player numbers.
First decision: use models you own or buy into a defined range?
Toy Box Wars: maximum model freedom
Toy Box Wars is the clearest choice when the models themselves are the reason you want to play. The publisher explicitly supports toys, models, miniatures and other objects at any scale. You can therefore build a battle around an existing toy collection instead of matching a manufacturer’s range.
The trade-off is preparation. The official sample build starts with a 3.75-inch action figure and assigns costs to abilities, advantages and disadvantages before applying armor and game-size adjustments. That worked example shows how the rules represent a figure; it does not establish that the resulting profile is balanced in every matchup. Before a first game, agree on how base size, height, weapon reach and unusual abilities will be interpreted.
Small Wars: flexible models with a stated force size
Bannerline Games describes Small Wars as a historical- and fantasy-compatible skirmish game for 10–40 miniatures, with no requirement to buy proprietary models. It occupies a middle ground: you retain freedom to use figures from different sources, but the advertised miniature range gives you a clearer target for collection size than Toy Box Wars does.
The publisher presents it as an instant PDF. That can reduce waiting for a physical shipment, but it also means you should plan for printing or screen use, storage and any accessories the rules require. The cited description does not state a standard game duration, player count or model scale.

Zone Wars: a defined product with components supplied
Free League Publishing’s Zone Wars is the most self-contained option in this comparison. Its core sets are described as including miniatures, paper terrain, rules, cards and dice, with no assembly needed. That is useful if you want to open a box and play without first building or painting an army.
The publisher lists ages 14+, one to four players and one to two hours. It describes the experience as “embracing mayhem and emergent narrative to create a fun and fast-flowing experience.” Those are the publisher’s design claims, not a measured average. The page currently describes two core sets, but stock and exact contents can vary by region, so check the live listing before ordering.
Maelstrom’s Edge: a conventional hobby commitment
Maelstrom’s Edge is aimed at players who want a model-and-terrain project rather than a no-prep toy battle. Spiral Arm Studios describes typical forces of 20–30 models per side, 28mm scale, alternating unit activation and mission scoring. Its V2 rulebook is listed as a 256-page hardcover.
Models require assembly and painting, and the publisher points players toward terrain. That adds tools, adhesives, paints, storage and table-building time before your first complete game. In return, a shared scale and defined force structure make it easier to plan a coherent collection and a visually consistent battlefield.

Second decision: how much rules customization do you want?
Build the unit yourself
Toy Box Wars and WARSURGE both make customization central. Toy Box Wars’ sample build prices individual abilities, advantages and disadvantages and then modifies the result for armor and game size. WARSURGE says players can create custom profiles for models or figures and use them for battles, skirmishes, multiplayer or solo games.
This approach is valuable when your favorite figure has no official rules. It also shifts work from the manufacturer to the group: someone must write profiles, settle ambiguous interactions and watch for combinations that are stronger than their point cost suggests. Keep a written profile for every unit and agree whether changes are allowed between games.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Use more defined missions and factions
Maelstrom’s Edge describes mission scoring and alternating unit activation, giving the battle a defined sequence and objective structure. A system with a common scale, established unit entries and published missions generally reduces the amount of pre-game interpretation, although it also narrows the models and themes you can use without adaptation.
Zone Wars takes a different route: the box supplies the miniatures, terrain, cards and dice, and its advertised one-to-four-player format is built around a shared product. You spend less time inventing a rules profile for each toy, but you have less freedom to make a completely unrelated object behave like a unit.

War On Terra advertises a single model-by-model ruleset that works from skirmish through full-army play. That is attractive if you want to begin with a small force and expand without learning a separate game. The publisher says the full rules and other required game elements are available free on its site. Its statements about boxed games are conditional on a store launch, so confirm the current physical-product status rather than assuming a box is available.
Third decision: components, assembly and painting
Separate the cost of rules from the labor of making a playable table. The products in this comparison make different trade-offs:
- Lowest preparation burden: Zone Wars core sets are described as requiring no assembly and include paper terrain, cards and dice alongside miniatures and rules.
- Rules-first preparation: Toy Box Wars does not have a confirmed physical box specification in the cited material. Plan to supply your own figures, measuring tools, dice and terrain unless the current product listing says otherwise.
- Digital-first: Small Wars is presented as an instant PDF. You may need to print the rules and provide all physical game materials.
- Hobby-intensive: Maelstrom’s Edge expects assembled and painted models and terrain. Budget time and workspace, not just the purchase price.
- Mixed physical and digital support: WARSURGE advertises a physical rulebook and compendium plus Android and iOS app support.
- Free rules option: War On Terra says its rules and other required game elements are available free online, while the availability of boxed products needs a current check.
None of these descriptions establishes a complete total cost. Retail prices, shipping, local taxes, paint supplies, terrain and replacement components differ by region and date. Check the publisher or retailer listing you would actually use.
Fourth decision: how large a game do you want to run?
Small collections and quick setup
Zone Wars publishes a one-to-two-hour session window and supports one to four players. Its supplied paper terrain and unassembled miniatures make it practical for a group that wants a defined evening activity without building a collection first.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Small Wars publishes a 10–40-miniature range. That is broad enough for a compact skirmish or a larger engagement, but the source does not specify how many miniatures a typical first game uses or how long one lasts.
Growing from skirmish to army
War On Terra explicitly positions one ruleset for skirmish through full-army play. WARSURGE also advertises both battles and skirmishes, along with multiplayer and solo modes. These descriptions support an expansion path, but they do not state a standard model count, table size or duration.
Structured forces of painted models
Maelstrom’s Edge’s typical 20–30 models per side is a substantial commitment compared with a small skirmish. The 28mm scale affects storage, terrain dimensions and table footprint. If you have limited space or want games finished in one sitting, verify the publisher’s recommended scenarios before assembling a full force.
A practical buying process
- Inventory what you already own. Record each figure’s approximate height, footprint, weapons and distinctive features. If you have unrelated toys, start with Toy Box Wars or another custom-profile system rather than buying a new range immediately.
- Choose your acceptable model policy. Decide whether “any model” means genuinely arbitrary objects or only figures that can be represented by a consistent base and profile. For a group, write this policy before the first game.
- Set a preparation limit. If you want to play the same day, prioritize a boxed product described as needing no assembly, such as Zone Wars. If building, painting and terrain are part of the hobby, Maelstrom’s Edge may fit better.
- Set a collection target. Use the published 10–40 miniatures for Small Wars and 20–30 models per side for Maelstrom’s Edge as planning ranges, not guarantees of a particular scenario. For systems without a stated count, choose a provisional number and confirm it in the current rules.
- Decide how much profile design you will tolerate. Custom systems require a profile-writing session and an agreement on point values. Defined games reduce that work but may require specific factions, cards or miniature types.
- Check player and time needs. Zone Wars is the only option in the cited material with directly stated figures: one to four players, one to two hours and ages 14+. Do not assign those numbers to the other games without a published statement.
- Confirm what is actually in the product. Look at the current regional listing for box contents, edition, stock, language and delivery. The descriptions used here do not verify live inventory or pricing.
- Run a short test battle. Use the smallest legal or agreed force. Check whether measuring, line of sight, profile writing and terrain handling are enjoyable before expanding the collection.

Pitfalls that can make a purchase disappointing
Assuming miniature-agnostic means automatically balanced
Miniature freedom solves a compatibility problem, not a balance problem. A very large object, a long-range weapon or an unusual ability can be difficult to price fairly. Use the sample build as a method demonstration, play a small test game and revise profiles openly.
Confusing a rules framework with a complete box
Toy Box Wars’ homepage provides links to a shop, sample build and sample scenario, but the cited shop product page was not retrievable for a verified price, edition or physical contents. Treat it as a rules-centered purchase until the current listing confirms otherwise.
Underestimating hobby labor
Assembly and painting are not minor details in Maelstrom’s Edge. They affect when you can play, how much workspace you need and whether a second-hand or mixed collection will be usable. Conversely, a no-assembly box may be less visually customizable than a model-building game.

Comparing unsupported numbers
Only use the figures the publishers actually state: Zone Wars’ one-to-four players and one-to-two hours, Small Wars’ 10–40 miniatures, Maelstrom’s Edge’s 20–30 models per side and 28mm scale, and its 256-page V2 hardcover. Do not infer typical game length, balance, popularity or total cost for systems that do not publish those measures.
Buying for a product format that may have changed
Stock, editions, regional contents and physical launches can change. Verify the live listing for Zone Wars, WARSURGE and any War On Terra boxed product, and check current delivery and language details before paying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to make the final choice
Choose Toy Box Wars when the figures you already own are the main attraction and you are willing to do profile and balance work. Choose Small Wars when you want non-proprietary models but prefer a stated 10–40-miniature skirmish range and an instant PDF. Choose Zone Wars when a supplied, no-assembly box, paper terrain and a one-to-four-player session matter more than using arbitrary toys.
Choose Maelstrom’s Edge when assembling, painting and expanding a 28mm force are part of the enjoyment. Examine WARSURGE when custom profiles and solo or multiplayer flexibility are priorities. Examine War On Terra when a single rules engine that can grow from skirmish to full army, with free online rules, is the deciding factor.
Before ordering, match the system to your actual table: available models, preparation time, number of players, session length, terrain, tolerance for custom rules and willingness to verify current product details. That checklist is more reliable than treating any one game as universally superior.
