Toy Story 3 Complete Edition supports two-player local co-op on Xbox in both Story Mode and Toy Box Mode. Connect two compatible controllers, start a playable section, and use the on-screen Player 2 join prompt. The game uses shared or split-screen play; the current Xbox listing does not publish one universal join button, so follow the prompt shown by your build.
What you need for two-player co-op
Local multiplayer runs on one Xbox console and one display. You need two compatible Xbox controllers, with each controller recognized as a separate player before entering the activity. Connect both controllers
Pair or plug in the first controller, then do the same with the second. Check that the second pad is awake and assigned as a separate player rather than controlling the first player’s profile. If the console does not react to the second controller, reconnect it before launching the game.

Launch Toy Story 3 Complete Edition
Open the game on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. The Xbox listing advertises local two-player play with shared or split-screen support on these platforms.

Select a mode
Choose Story Mode for the campaign or Toy Box Mode for sandbox-style play. The official feature list says local two-player co-op is available in both modes.

Load a playable section
Continue or start the selected activity until the game has entered a playable scene. Menus, loading screens, and other non-playable screens may not show the join control.

Accept the Player 2 prompt
Watch for the on-screen instruction inviting Player 2 to join. Press the button displayed by your current build on the second controller. Do not rely on a button printed in an older guide: the official Xbox listing does not specify a universal button for joining.

Confirm both players are active
Move each character briefly. The game supports swapping among Woody, Buzz, and Jessie, whose different abilities can be used while completing cooperative objectives. If only one character responds, return to the controller checks and join prompt rather than starting a new save.

The two modes differ in structure, not in the basic local-player limit. The available evidence supports two players in each mode; it does not support a claim that Toy Box adds a third player or an online option.
How the shared and split-screen display works
Xbox describes the feature as shared/split-screen co-op. In practice, both players remain in the same local session while the display presents the action in the format selected by the game for that scene. Because this is local co-op, both controllers act on the same console and the session is visible on the same screen.

The listing does not document a manual control for forcing one display style over the other. If the presentation changes between scenes, that is part of the game’s handling of the local session rather than evidence that Player 2 has disconnected.

Getting Player 2 to join when nothing happens
The second controller is not recognized
- Wake the second controller and reconnect it by cable or pairing procedure.
- Verify that the console treats it as a second player, not as a duplicate input device for Player 1.
- Close and relaunch the game after both controllers are visible to the console.
- Test the second controller in another console menu or game to distinguish a controller issue from a Toy Story 3 issue.
No join prompt appears
- Enter an actual playable section; the invitation may not be shown on the title screen or in a menu.
- Choose Story Mode or Toy Box Mode, both of which are listed as supporting local co-op.
- Leave the current activity and load it again with both controllers already connected.
- Look for the exact instruction on screen instead of assuming a fixed face button. The official listing leaves the button unspecified.
Player 2 joins, then drops out
- Check that the second controller remains powered and assigned to the same player.
- Reconnect the pad and repeat the in-game join prompt.
- If the problem occurs only after changing modes, return to the mode-selection screen and load a fresh playable section.
The screen looks different from an older video
Menus and prompts can vary by platform build and update. The reliable requirements are the ones currently listed for Xbox: two local players, shared/split-screen support, and availability in Story Mode and Toy Box Mode. Use the prompt rendered by the installed version rather than copying a button from a video made for another release.
Can two people play on one Xbox?
Yes. The current Xbox product page lists local co-op for two players and shared/split-screen play. Both people use controllers connected to the same Xbox, and both join the same Story Mode or Toy Box Mode activity. The stated maximum is two local players, so a third controller does not create a third co-op participant.
Does Toy Story 3 Complete Edition have online multiplayer?
The Xbox feature list promotes local/shared split-screen co-op and does not advertise native Xbox online multiplayer or online matchmaking. That means you should plan on both players being present at the same console for the Xbox version.
Steam separately lists “Remote Play Together.” That feature can relay a local split-screen session from a PC host to another person through Steam, but it is a Steam capability, not evidence of native online multiplayer on Xbox. It also does not change the game’s two-player local design.

Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S considerations
The current Xbox listing identifies the Complete Edition as playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Xbox’s backward-compatibility guidance says offline multiplayer scenarios, including co-op and multiple controllers on one console, are supported when the original game supports them, while also warning that specific functionality varies by game.
For this edition, use the current product-page feature list as the practical authority: it explicitly names Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, two-player local co-op, and shared/split-screen play. If a console displays a compatibility or controller message, install the available game update, reconnect both controllers, and retry from a newly loaded activity.

Co-op is more than two people viewing the same campaign. Players can swap among Woody, Buzz, and Jessie. Their different abilities support cooperative objectives, so coordinate who is controlling which character when a section requires more than one type of action.

- Agree on who will lead movement before entering a new objective.

- If one player is learning the controls, Toy Box Mode offers a less linear place to become comfortable before returning to campaign progression.

No. Steam Remote Play Together applies to a Steam-hosted PC session. It is not an Xbox online feature.
