Touhou Koumakyou: The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is Touhou Project’s sixth official game and the first made specifically for Windows. Originally released at Comiket 62 on August 11, 2002, it is a six-stage, single-player vertical danmaku shooter in which Reimu Hakurei or Marisa Kirisame investigates a scarlet mist covering Gensokyo. The 2026 release packages a remastered New Classic version with the original-style Classic version, making the game available to newcomers and series historians alike.

What is Touhou Koumakyou?
Touhou Koumakyou, commonly identified in English as The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil and often called “Touhou 6” or “EoSD,” is the sixth official Touhou Project game. It follows the five PC-98 releases and begins the main Windows chronology. The original full release was sold at Comiket 62 on August 11, 2002.
It is a single-player, vertical danmaku shooter. “Danmaku,” literally bullet curtain, describes the patterned fields of enemy projectiles that occupy the play area. Winning is less about eliminating enemies as quickly as possible than about reading trajectories, making precise movements, and deciding when to spend a limited bomb. The game has six stages and two playable characters, each with two equipment types.

Koumakyou is historically important because it established several ideas that became standard reference points for later Windows-era Touhou games. It introduced Spell Cards and retained the full-power “Item Get” behavior, in which moving to the top of the playfield collects all visible items. Its visual language, cast, and basic systems became a foundation for successors such as Perfect Cherry Blossom and Imperishable Night.
The story: the Scarlet Mist Incident
A mist blocks the summer sun
The story begins during a normally peaceful summer in Gensokyo. An unnatural scarlet mist spreads across the land, obscuring the sun. The affected areas become dark and cold, and ordinary life is disrupted. The official synopsis describes the situation simply: “Gensoukyou has been blanketed in a scarlet mist.”
Because the mist prevents the usual sunlight from reaching Gensokyo, someone must investigate its source rather than wait for the phenomenon to disappear. That investigation is the game’s central narrative thread: each stage carries the protagonists farther toward the place responsible for the weather-like incident.

Reimu Hakurei, the Hakurei Shrine maiden, sets out to resolve the incident. Her role is to deal with supernatural disturbances affecting Gensokyo, so the spreading mist is a direct challenge to her responsibilities.
Marisa Kirisame, a magician who lives near the Forest of Magic, investigates independently. Selecting one character does not create a different overall incident; it changes the way the shooter plays and supplies character-specific dialogue and equipment.

The Scarlet Devil Mansion
The trail leads to the Scarlet Devil Mansion, a conspicuously Western-style estate. Its owners and residents include vampires, a maid, and other youkai. The setting is a deliberate tonal contrast: Touhou is strongly associated with eastern folklore, while this story places its confrontation in an imported-looking supernatural mansion. That contrast is an interpretation of the presentation, not a claim that the game abandons Gensokyo’s folklore setting.
The mansion is the factual destination given by the game’s official synopsis. The narrative’s eccentric residents provide the personalities and confrontations encountered on the route, while the underlying question remains practical: who created the mist, and why?
Characters that became series touchstones
The game’s cast has remained highly visible in Touhou fandom. Sakuya Izayoi, Cirno, Remilia Scarlet, and Flandre Scarlet are repeatedly recognized as enduringly popular characters. That observation indicates long-term visibility, not a particular ranking or percentage; popularity depends on the poll, date, and audience being measured.
How the gameplay works
The six-stage vertical loop
Each run moves upward through six vertically scrolling stages. Enemies enter in formations, fire aimed or patterned volleys, and may leave items when defeated. You steer a small player hitbox through those patterns while maintaining a shot. The apparent density can be intimidating, but the intended skill is to recognize safe lanes and make small, deliberate corrections rather than panic-moving.
Stages culminate in major encounters built around named attack patterns. In Touhou terminology, these patterns are Spell Cards. Learning the visual rhythm of an attack, identifying where the next gap will open, and preserving a bomb for a genuinely dangerous sequence are more reliable than attempting to overpower every pattern.

Movement, shot, bomb and Focus Mode
The current release uses four essential actions:
- Movement: steer the character around bullets and into useful positions.
- Standard shot: fire continuously at enemies. Different shot types alter where your damage is concentrated.
- Bomb: a limited-use emergency attack that clears or suppresses danger. Bombs are resources, so spending one to survive is often better than losing a life while trying to save it.
- Focus Mode: slow the character’s movement for fine dodging. The reduced speed helps when a gap is only slightly wider than the player hitbox.
Some shot types home toward enemies, making them forgiving when your character is not perfectly aligned. Others reward direct, high-power attacks and therefore ask you to take a more aggressive position. The choice changes how you route stages; it is not merely a cosmetic loadout.

These are broad design tendencies rather than a promise that every equipment type behaves identically. Each character has two equipment options, and the shot descriptions in the current release explain whether a pattern homes, spreads, or favors direct power. A first-time player who finds dense patterns overwhelming may prefer Reimu’s coverage; a player who enjoys fast repositioning and attacking a target head-on may prefer Marisa.
Spell Cards, lives and Item Get
Spell Cards are one of Koumakyou’s defining systems. They turn boss attacks into recognizable challenges with their own names, shapes, and timing. Treating a Spell Card as a pattern to study is more productive than treating it as random fire. Watch the first attempt for its rhythm, then adjust your position on the next attempt.
The game also preserves the “Item Get” behavior. When your character reaches the top of the playfield at full power, all on-screen items are collected. This turns the upper part of the screen into a deliberate collection zone: you can sweep up items without individually chasing each one, but moving upward is safe only when the current bullet pattern allows it.
What the original design was trying to do
In the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil afterword, ZUN wrote that the game “brings things back to the starting point, by curbing the game systems that change the difficulty in obscure ways, while focusing on the natural fun of dodging bullets at the same time.” The quotation, reproduced by Touhou Wiki and attributed to ZUN, explains why the game feels comparatively direct: the challenge is meant to be legible in the bullet patterns and in your movement decisions, not hidden behind a large collection of interacting progression systems.

How Koumakyou fits into the Touhou series
The bridge from PC-98 to Windows
Koumakyou follows Mystic Square, the fifth and final PC-98 Touhou game. It is therefore both a continuation and a reset point: the danmaku fundamentals remain, but the Windows presentation establishes the visual and character vocabulary most players now associate with Touhou.
The next numbered main entry is Perfect Cherry Blossom. Playing Koumakyou first is not mandatory for understanding every later plot, but it gives useful context for recurring characters, the structure of a Touhou incident, and the series’ preference for patterned attacks over conventional shooter explosions.
Why its systems still matter
Later games refine the same basic conversation between movement, firepower, resources, and pattern recognition. Koumakyou’s Spell Cards provide a vocabulary for discussing attacks; Item Get makes full-power collection a positional decision; and the two-character, two-shot structure makes replay about finding a style that suits you rather than simply increasing statistics. Those choices are why the 2002 game remains a practical starting point for understanding the Windows era instead of being only a historical curiosity.
New Classic versus Classic in the 2026 release
The current product family contains two versions. They share the Scarlet Mist scenario and the core dodge-and-shoot identity, but they target different priorities: modern presentation and accessibility on one side, and preservation of the 2002 experience on the other.

What “unlimited lives” changes
Unlimited-lives mode changes the cost of practice. You can continue learning a pattern without repeatedly restarting from the beginning after a mistake. It does not make the standard Classic rules unlimited; it is a New Classic challenge option. Players interested in the original resource pressure should use the traditional mode instead.

Which version should you choose?
- Choose New Classic if you want 1080p art, rearranged music, multilingual text, or a practice-friendly unlimited-lives option.
- Choose Classic if historical fidelity matters more than convenience and Japanese text is acceptable.
- Use both if you want to compare how presentation and added systems affect the same six-stage scenario. The product family includes both versions in its listed editions.
Platforms, release dates and editions
Where it is available
The 2026 release is listed for Steam, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation 5. The official product materials list support for Japanese, English, Chinese, Korean, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, and Italian; that language list applies to the supported version and platform configuration shown by the publisher, so check the store page for the exact interface and subtitle options on your hardware.
Why two dates appear
The official page lists September 10, 2026 as the release date. Steam records September 9, 2026. The one-day difference reflects storefront and regional date conventions rather than two separate games. If you are checking availability, use the date displayed by the store serving your account.
Standard and Deluxe
The official site lists a Standard edition containing both game versions. The Deluxe edition contains both versions plus a digital sound player; on Steam, the equivalent music extra is delivered as a soundtrack. These are digital-edition details, not evidence of a separately documented physical cartridge, disc, printed guide, or title-specific accessory.

How to start playing Touhou 6
- Pick a version. Start with New Classic if you need translated text or want unlimited-lives practice. Select Classic when preserving the 2002 rules and presentation is the priority.
- Select Reimu or Marisa. Reimu’s broad coverage and evasion emphasis are generally more forgiving for learning movement. Marisa’s speed and concentrated power suit players who prefer direct attacks and rapid repositioning.
- Choose an equipment type. Read the in-game description. Homing attacks reduce the need for exact alignment; direct-power shots reward staying on top of a target.
- Learn Focus Mode immediately. Use normal movement to cross open space, then slow down for narrow gaps and dense patterns. Switching speed deliberately is safer than trying to maintain one movement speed everywhere.
- Watch before forcing progress. On a first attempt, observe the direction and timing of bullets. On the next attempt, move toward the safe lane earlier and keep your character near the center unless the pattern demands otherwise.
- Spend bombs as survival tools. A bomb that preserves a life and your position is usually more valuable than a bomb saved for an ideal moment that never arrives. In Classic, remember that lives and bombs are finite.
- Use Item Get intentionally. At full power, move to the top of the field only after confirming that the current pattern leaves a safe route. The collection behavior rewards planning; it is not a reason to rush upward blindly.
What makes the game difficult—and how to make it manageable
The apparent difficulty comes from simultaneous demands: enemies must be damaged, bullets must be read, and limited resources must be preserved. Most failures are positioning errors rather than a lack of raw reaction speed. Focus Mode, small corrections, and learning one Spell Card at a time reduce that burden.
- You keep colliding while moving quickly: switch to Focus Mode for the final adjustment instead of making a large directional turn.
- You lose track of your character in dense fire: stop chasing every item and hold a stable position until the pattern opens.
- You die with unused bombs: set a personal rule to bomb when a pattern becomes unreadable or your escape lane closes.
- Bosses feel impossible: treat each Spell Card as a separate lesson. Identify whether bullets are aimed at your current position, sweep across the screen, or form a repeating lane.
- You want the original challenge but bought the modern version: select the traditional finite-lives option rather than unlimited-lives mode, or launch the included Classic version.
Touhou Koumakyou matters because it is simultaneously an approachable shooter concept and a historical turning point. The Scarlet Mist Incident gives the six-stage run a clear destination; Spell Cards and Item Get define the interaction model; and the New Classic/Classic split lets you decide whether modern readability or 2002 fidelity should come first.
