There is no defensible, price-checked “top five” ranking in the available evidence. The right touchscreen laptop for a student depends first on whether required class software works on ChromeOS or needs Windows, then on pen support, typing comfort, portability, and the exact configuration available locally.
Start with the software your classes require
Before comparing screens, confirm the operating system required by your school and courses. Chromebooks can be affordable and straightforward for common school tasks, but some college applications are not available on ChromeOS, as TechRadar notes in its Chromebook guide. Ask the school or instructor about required applications, account access, and any Windows-only desktop software.
- ChromeOS may fit if coursework runs in a browser or uses compatible Chromebook apps and school services.
- Windows may be necessary if a course depends on a specific Windows desktop application. Check compatibility for the exact app rather than assuming a web version is equivalent.
- ARM-based Windows needs a separate check: some applications may not work or perform well on the Surface Pro 11th Edition’s ARM platform, according to RTINGS’ Surface Pro 11th Edition review.
Decide whether you need a convertible or a detachable
360-degree convertible
A convertible keeps its keyboard attached and folds through laptop, tent, stand, and tablet modes. That can be useful for typing papers in laptop mode and folding the screen back for touch or pen tasks. ASUS describes these modes for its Vivobook Flip models in its 2026 announcement. The trade-off is that the device still needs to work well as a keyboard-first laptop for long writing sessions.
Detachable tablet
A detachable puts the touchscreen tablet first, with a separate keyboard accessory. RTINGS describes the Surface Pro 11th Edition as suitable for pen work, but says its keyboard and stylus are sold separately. Include those accessories in the total cost and make sure the keyboard suits the student’s typing needs.

Check pen support and what comes in the box
Touch input does not guarantee active-pen compatibility, and pen support does not mean a pen is bundled. ASUS lists pen support for the Vivobook Flip and stylus support on convertible configurations of its Chromebook CZ series; Microsoft describes pen features for supported Surface devices. Verify support for the exact model and confirm whether the stylus is included or sold separately before buying.
For handwritten notes, annotate course readings, or drawing, look for explicit active-pen compatibility rather than relying on the word “touchscreen.” If the student mainly taps, scrolls, and navigates, a pen may not be worth the added cost.
Match screen size to reading and carrying habits
Screen size affects both the space available for documents and how easily the laptop fits in a school bag. ASUS’s student-oriented Chromebook CZ series includes 11.6- and 12.2-inch touchscreen models, while the announced Vivobook Flip range includes 14- and 16-inch screens. These are different portability and workspace choices, not interchangeable recommendations.

- Smaller screen: consider it when compact carrying matters and most work involves one document or browser window at a time.
- Larger screen: consider it for more room to read, write, or view multiple windows, while checking dimensions and weight for daily transport.
Screen size alone does not establish resolution, brightness, weight, or outdoor readability. Check those details on the precise regional configuration you are considering.
Examples by student use case—not a ranked top five
The following products illustrate different categories. The available evidence does not establish five currently purchasable configurations with comparable live prices or independent testing, so this is not a tested ranking.
For a school-managed Chromebook with a compact convertible design
ASUS Chromebook CZ series (CZ1104F/CZ1204F): ASUS announced this K–12-oriented line with 11.6- or 12.2-inch touchscreen options, convertible modes, stylus support, ruggedized features, and modular design. The described configuration offers up to 8GB of memory and 128GB eMMC storage. ASUS also claims up to 19 hours of battery life; treat that as a manufacturer figure, not a guarantee of a full school day, and check the test conditions and specific configuration. For Windows, a larger convertible screen, and pen support
ASUS Vivobook 14 Flip TP3407AA / Vivobook 16 Flip TP3607AA: ASUS announced these 2026 Windows convertibles with OLED touchscreens, 360-degree hinges, and ASUS Pen 3.0 support. The announcement describes configurations up to Intel Core Ultra 9 Series 3, 32GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD; those are maximum offered specifications, not the specifications of every configuration. The announcement does not establish that a pen is included. Check the exact model, memory, storage, pen bundle, regional availability, and price before choosing. For a Windows convertible listed with 16GB RAM
Dell 14 Plus 2-in-1: Dell’s US student touchscreen listing described an AMD Ryzen AI 7, 16GB RAM, and an FHD+ touchscreen. It displayed a price of $1,549.99 when accessed on October 7, 2026. That is a time-sensitive US listing snapshot, not a lasting price or a comparison across the market. Verify the current listing, configuration, accessories, and warranty. For basic Chromebook tasks in a 2-in-1 form
Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 360: TechRadar’s 2026 student guide lists a 12.4-inch touchscreen configuration with 4GB RAM and 64GB eMMC storage. The guide says it suits basic tasks but flags limited processing power and memory. For tablet-first Windows use and detachable accessories
Microsoft Surface Pro 11th Edition: RTINGS describes this detachable touchscreen as suitable for pen work, while noting that the keyboard and stylus are separate purchases. Product names can cover substantially different configurations, and availability varies by region. Compare the exact units you can purchase, including the accessories needed for the student’s workflow.

Do not treat a product line’s maximum specification as standard.
- Battery life: manufacturer estimates are not directly comparable unless the test methods and configurations match. Review the stated conditions and seek comparable independent testing rather than assuming any advertised figure guarantees a full day.
- Durability and repair: check what protection, modular parts, repair options, and warranty apply to the exact model and location. A ruggedized feature claim does not replace checking warranty terms.
- Ports and accessories: make sure the device supports the peripherals and charging setup the student uses, and account for a separate keyboard or stylus where needed.
- Price and availability: confirm the live price, exact regional model, warranty, and included items with the retailer or manufacturer; listings and configurations can change.
Why this is not a ranked top five
A useful top-five ranking would need a defined market and budget, five currently purchasable configurations, comparable live pricing, verified app and pen compatibility, and current independent tests using disclosed methods. Those comparisons are not established here. Manufacturer specifications and retailer listings can help identify candidates, but they do not prove that a touchscreen improves grades, learning, or productivity.
