Touch Grass is presented by its creator as an offline route planner for cycling, running, hiking, and walking that uses a local Gemma model rather than sending a starting location to a third-party cloud service. Its described software stack is specific, but important practical details—especially where its map data comes from and whether route generation works with the network disabled—are not established in the project description.
What Touch Grass is designed to do
Arjav Patni describes Touch Grass as a route generator for people who want to explore their neighborhoods without broadcasting exact starting coordinates to a cloud service. The intended activities include cycling, running, hiking, and casual walks. This is the author’s project description, not an independently verified assessment of a released or tested product. Patni’s project submission on DEV Community was posted October 6, 2025.
How the reported software stack works
The author reports a Python FastAPI backend and a Next.js frontend built with TypeScript and Tailwind CSS. Gemma 2B runs locally on macOS through Ollama. In the described design, Python handles pacing calculations and kilometer markers, then gives Gemma a structured template to fill. That division suggests the model is used to generate or shape route-plan content while the application handles specific calculations; it does not, by itself, explain how navigable routes are found.
The submission also describes a mobile-first, high-contrast interface with a preparation checklist and a timeline-based navigation view. It does not provide model or framework version numbers, minimum hardware requirements, device testing, or field results.

What “offline” and “privacy-first” mean here
The privacy premise is that a user’s starting coordinates need not be sent to a third-party cloud server because Gemma is run locally. However, the project description does not include an independent data-flow audit, so it does not establish exactly what information the full application transmits or stores.
Likewise, the author calls the planner offline, but the description does not explain whether route generation was tested with the network disabled. It does not identify the map, road, or trail data used to create route geometry, or say whether those data are stored on the device. Without that information, the claim should be understood as the project’s stated design goal rather than verified offline navigation capability.

What to check before relying on it outdoors
The available description is not enough to determine whether Touch Grass can produce a real, turn-by-turn route for a particular area or continue working without connectivity. Before relying on it for a trip, look for evidence that addresses these practical questions:
- Can the app generate a route when the device has no internet connection?
- What map, trail, and road data does it use, and are those data available locally?
- Does it provide route geometry and navigation, or primarily a generated plan with pacing and distance markers?
- What location or other user data leaves the device, if any?
- Which Mac models and software versions can run its Ollama and Gemma setup?
Patni reports running the local model on macOS, but gives no minimum computer specifications or supported Mac models. That supports only the broad observation that a Mac capable of running Ollama and the local model is part of the reported setup—not a recommendation for a particular computer.
