Yes. Dolphin on Android can play Super Mario Galaxy with touchscreen controls, including a touchscreen Wii Remote pointer that was tuned for Galaxy. Touch is free and requires no accessory. For extended play, however, a Bluetooth controller is usually the better default because physical buttons and an analog stick are easier to use precisely. The most flexible setup is hybrid: use the controller for movement and buttons, while keeping the touchscreen available for the Star Pointer.

What each control method must handle in Galaxy

Super Mario Galaxy was designed around the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, so a usable Android setup has to reproduce more than ordinary directional movement. You need a continuous movement input, face buttons, system buttons, the on-screen Star Pointer and motion actions such as shaking the Wii Remote. The pointer is used to collect Star Bits, interact with objects and aim at targets. Motion is used for actions including spin attacks and other context-sensitive moves.

That combination explains why the choice is not simply “buttons versus a touchscreen.” A method can feel fine for walking and jumping yet become awkward when the game asks for accurate pointing or a quick shake. Dolphin exposes separate mappings for the emulated Wii Remote, Nunchuk, pointer and motion sources, so you can combine input methods instead of forcing every function onto one device.

Touchscreen or Bluetooth: the practical verdict

Concern Touch controls Bluetooth controller
Cost and portability No accessory cost; works with the Android device you already have. Requires a separately purchased, charged controller and a Bluetooth pairing.
Movement and ordinary buttons Virtual controls are always available, but they have no tactile edges and can cover part of the game image. Physical buttons and an analog stick provide tactile feedback and more precise movement for long sessions.
Star Pointer Dolphin’s touchscreen pointer can track the intended on-screen position; its implementation was specifically tuned with Galaxy in mind. Can be assigned to a stick, gyro or another input source, but that mapping must be configured and may feel less direct than touching the screen.
Motion actions The early Android touch implementation did not provide motion controls. Current Dolphin builds provide motion simulation and alternate input sources, but touch itself is not a motion sensor. A controller with a gyro can provide motion input when Android and Dolphin expose its sensors. A controller without sensors needs a button or another simulated-motion mapping.
Setup effort Enable Dolphin’s Android overlay and Wii Remote/Nunchuk touch controls, then adjust placement and size. Pair in Android, choose the correct emulated Wii Remote profile in Dolphin, and map each control and sensor.
Best use Travel, short sessions, testing, or anyone who does not want to carry hardware. Regular play, difficult levels and sessions where precise movement and comfortable buttons matter.

There is no authoritative head-to-head measurement of latency, comfort or game-completion rates in the available official material. The recommendation is therefore based on the control requirements and the configuration capabilities documented by Dolphin and Android, not on a published benchmark.

Why touch controls are viable now

Dolphin’s Android support changed in stages. A September 2016 progress report announced Wiimote touch controls, but described them as limited: only the Wii Remote and Nunchuk were available, with no motion controls and no pointer. That limitation meant the first implementation could not reproduce Galaxy’s complete control scheme by itself.

A December 2018/January 2019 progress report documented the important later addition: Dolphin could use the touchscreen to emulate the Wii Remote pointer. The implementation was tuned for games including Super Mario Galaxy so that the touchscreen maps one-to-one with the in-game pointer position. This is why a modern Dolphin build can make touch practical for Star Bits and other pointer tasks even though the original 2016 feature could not.

Later work continued to target touch controls and Android controller support. Dolphin’s 2023 progress report identified motion controls, infrared and controller orientation among the requested improvements. A 2024 release report also clarified an important qualification: controller-sensor support works only when the Android version supports sensors for that particular controller. A recent Dolphin build therefore does not guarantee that every gyro-equipped gamepad will expose usable motion data.

Set up Super Mario Galaxy with touch controls

Menu names can differ slightly between Dolphin Android builds, but the controls are configured through the Android overlay and the emulated Wii Remote settings. Start with the default layout, then make only the changes you need; a heavily customized overlay is harder to troubleshoot.

  1. Open the game’s controller configuration. In Dolphin, select the emulated Wii Remote slot used by Galaxy. Choose the Android touchscreen or overlay input source rather than a physical controller profile.
  2. Enable Wii Remote and Nunchuk touch controls. Turn on the on-screen controls for the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. Confirm that the virtual movement stick and the required buttons appear over the game.
  3. Place the movement control where your thumb rests. Put the Nunchuk stick on the left side and leave enough room to reach it without covering Mario. A fixed stick is usually easier to use consistently than a control that relocates when touched.
  4. Assign the essential buttons. Map the virtual Wii Remote buttons used for jump and interaction, the Nunchuk button used by the game, plus and minus, and any button you intend to use for a simulated shake. Keep the labels visible until the layout is familiar.
  5. Turn on the touchscreen pointer. Enable the pointer control in the Wii Remote overlay. Dolphin’s later touchscreen implementation is the part that provides the Galaxy-oriented one-to-one pointer behavior.
  6. Test pointer tracking before starting a level. Move a finger to each edge and corner of the phone screen and verify that the in-game pointer follows the same direction and reaches the expected location. If it stops short, check whether an overlay margin, display cutout or custom scaling option is reducing the active area.
  7. Test motion substitutes. Because a finger on the overlay is not a Wii Remote motion sensor, assign a convenient button or gesture to the motion-simulation action exposed by your Dolphin build. Try it in a safe area before relying on it during a boss fight.
  8. Save the profile. Store the configuration as a Galaxy or touch profile if your build offers per-game controller profiles. This prevents later experiments with a gamepad from overwriting the working overlay.

Touch overlays can be resized and moved, but larger controls consume more screen space. Start with moderate sizes, then enlarge only the controls you miss. Keep the pointer area unobstructed; placing a large virtual stick over it defeats the advantage of Dolphin’s direct pointer mapping.

What touch feels like in actual play

Touch is strongest when the phone is supported in both hands and the pointer is used deliberately with a thumb or index finger. It is weakest when you need simultaneous actions: holding movement, pressing a face button and shaking or pointing in quick succession can require awkward finger choreography. Screen glare, sweaty fingers and accidental touches on the navigation area can also affect consistency, although these are device and layout issues rather than Dolphin-specific limits.

For short sessions, travel or a second device, those compromises may be acceptable. Touch also has one advantage a controller cannot automatically match: the pointer is already on the same surface as the game image, so no extra stick-to-screen translation is required.

Set up a Bluetooth controller

A Bluetooth pad improves the controls you use constantly, but pairing it does not automatically reproduce a Wii Remote. Dolphin still needs a Wii Remote profile and explicit mappings for movement, buttons, pointer and motion.

  1. Charge and pair the controller in Android. Open Android’s Bluetooth settings, put the controller into pairing mode and select it from the list of available devices. Wait until Android reports it as connected before opening Dolphin.
  2. Open Dolphin’s Wii Remote configuration. Select the emulated Wii Remote slot used by Galaxy and choose the connected controller as the input device or alternate input source. If several devices are listed, select the one whose buttons and axes change when you test them.
  3. Map movement. Assign the controller’s left analog stick to the Nunchuk stick. Test slow, partial movement as well as a full tilt; Galaxy benefits from the ability to walk or make small adjustments instead of having only an all-or-nothing direction.
  4. Map the ordinary buttons. Assign the gamepad buttons to the Wii Remote and Nunchuk actions used by the game, including A, B, plus and minus. Use labels that are easy to remember rather than copying the physical lettering blindly, since the emulated Wii Remote layout is not identical to every gamepad.
  5. Choose a motion action. If the controller has no usable sensors, map shake or another motion-simulation command to a spare button. Pick a button that can be pressed without removing your thumb from the movement stick.
  6. Configure the pointer. Decide whether the right stick, a gyro, a touchpad or the phone touchscreen will control the Wii Remote pointer. Dolphin’s controller guide supports alternate input sources, but each source has to be selected and calibrated in the profile.
  7. Save a separate profile. Keep the Bluetooth mapping separate from the touch layout. A saved profile lets you switch back to touch if the controller battery is empty or its sensors are not available.
  8. Run an in-game check. Confirm movement, jump, spin or shake, plus/minus and pointer behavior in that order. Fix the first failed mapping before testing the next one; otherwise it is easy to mistake a wrong device selection for a missing feature.

How to map the Star Pointer

The pointer deserves its own decision because it is the control that most clearly distinguishes Galaxy from a conventional platform game.

Use the touchscreen with a Bluetooth pad

This is the recommended hybrid arrangement for many players. Leave the physical gamepad responsible for movement and buttons, but enable only the touchscreen pointer overlay. When the game asks for Star Bits or a targeted interaction, touch the desired location directly; return to the sticks without changing Dolphin profiles.

The hybrid approach avoids the two common mistakes: trying to make a thumbstick behave like a mouse while simultaneously controlling Mario, and disabling the pointer just because a physical controller is connected. It also gives you a fallback if the controller’s right stick or gyro feels imprecise.

Use a right stick

A stick can work when you prefer to keep both hands on the controller. In Dolphin’s Wii Remote mapping, assign the right stick axes to the pointer axes and adjust sensitivity or range if those options are available. A stick normally moves a cursor relative to its current position, whereas the touchscreen implementation is designed to place the pointer directly at the touched screen location. Expect to spend time finding a comfortable sensitivity and recentering method.

Use gyro or another alternate source

Dolphin supports alternate input sources for motion data from other hardware. A gyro-equipped controller can aim by moving the controller, provided Android exposes its sensor and Dolphin can read it. A touchpad or another mapped device can also be selected when your hardware presents one to Android. These options are powerful but more dependent on the exact phone, Android release and controller firmware than ordinary button mappings.

Motion controls: what works and what does not

Do not assume that a touch overlay supplies motion merely because it displays a virtual Wii Remote. The original 2016 Android touch implementation explicitly had no motion controls. Current Dolphin builds can simulate motion and can accept motion input from alternate sources, but those are different mechanisms.

  • Button simulation: a selected button triggers the emulated shake or motion action. It is predictable and works with controllers that have no sensors, but it does not reproduce directional movement or tilt.
  • Controller sensors: a gyro or accelerometer can provide a closer approximation of Wii Remote movement. Android must support that controller’s sensors, and Dolphin must expose them in the selected profile.
  • Phone sensors: availability depends on whether the Dolphin Android build and the device expose the phone’s inertial sensors as an input source. Do not assume that a phone with a gyroscope automatically means every Dolphin profile can use it.

Test sensor availability on the actual Android device, not just from the controller’s product description. Dolphin’s 2024 release notes make Android-side sensor support a prerequisite, so replacing the controller or updating Android can change what appears in the input menu.

Troubleshooting common problems

The pointer is missing

Reopen the emulated Wii Remote settings and verify that the pointer input is enabled for the active profile. The 2016 touch feature did not include a pointer, so an old build or an old profile may expose Wii Remote and Nunchuk buttons without the later touchscreen pointer option. Update to a current Dolphin build where possible, then test the overlay on the game screen rather than in the configuration preview.

The pointer moves, but not where you touch

Check for display scaling, a phone cutout, an overlay boundary or a custom screen layout that changes the active coordinates. Restore the default overlay temporarily and test the four corners. If the default tracks correctly, reapply custom margins one change at a time.

The controller connects but no buttons register

Confirm that Android shows the controller as connected before Dolphin starts. In the selected Wii Remote profile, choose the controller’s actual device entry and press each button while watching the input indicators. If another device is selected, Dolphin may be listening to a virtual or previously paired controller.

Movement works, but the pointer does not

Movement and pointer are separate mappings. Keep the left stick assigned to the Nunchuk stick, then configure a right stick, gyro, touchpad or touchscreen as the pointer source. If no controller source feels natural, use the hybrid touchscreen pointer instead of sacrificing movement quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shake or tilt does nothing

First determine whether the profile uses button simulation or a sensor source. For simulation, verify that a button is assigned to the motion action and test it in a low-risk area. For sensors, check whether Android exposes the controller’s gyro or accelerometer and whether Dolphin lists it as an alternate input source. A controller can contain sensors that the phone’s Android version does not make available to applications.

The overlay blocks too much of the picture

Reduce virtual-button size, move the stick toward the edge and hide controls you do not need while keeping the pointer available. Save the revised layout as a touch profile so the Bluetooth profile remains uncluttered.

Inputs feel inconsistent after switching devices

Use separate saved profiles for touch and Bluetooth. Recheck the active Wii Remote slot after reconnecting a controller; Android can assign a different device entry when multiple pads have been paired. A profile built for one controller’s axis order may not match another controller even if both are labeled as generic gamepads.

Cost, compatibility and maintenance

Touch controls have no accessory cost. A Bluetooth controller adds the purchase cost of the hardware, plus charging and carrying it; exact prices and availability vary and are not established here. The practical cost is justified when you play often enough to value physical controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility is not just “Android versus Bluetooth.” It includes the controller’s button and axis layout, whether Android recognizes its inertial sensors, and whether the Dolphin build exposes those inputs. Ordinary buttons and sticks are generally the least demanding part. Pointer alternatives and motion sensors require the most testing.

Keep Dolphin updated when a release specifically addresses Android controller, touch, infrared or orientation behavior, but retain a known-good profile before changing versions. A new build can add an input option without automatically migrating a customized overlay or sensor mapping.

Bottom line for Galaxy on Android

Touch controls are a legitimate way to play Super Mario Galaxy in Dolphin: the touchscreen pointer support was added after the initial limited touch implementation and was tuned with Galaxy among its target games. They are the right no-cost choice for occasional play and travel.

For regular, longer sessions, use a Bluetooth controller for the analog stick and physical buttons. Do not disable the touchscreen pointer simply because a controller is connected. A hybrid profile gives you the strongest combination: tactile movement and button control, direct touchscreen aiming, and optional gyro or simulated motion after you verify that Android and Dolphin support the chosen sensor path.
